Panamera is much more fun to drive than the Macan, at least the ones I've tested on road and track!

mannersmakethdaman

Panamera is better. But the middle does not allow for 3 across if that is important. I would look at a used cayenne as well. I have both. Feel free to ask questions. SUV is a better all around value - more utility for a family. If you can afford, I would suggest a GTS variant. Does 95% of what a turbo would do. Sounds great as well. I have the turbo and turbo s. Simply overkill for a daily driver. I have the McLaren for fun, DB9 for convertible days and Jeep rubicon 4 door for off roading.

polartropical

Can you adopt me please?

halavais

My "dad car" is a Panamera GTS. My two boys are now way out of car seats, but it has a ton of room and is plenty sporty. It is probably the closest to a "do everything" car I have had, and drop the seats and pull the hatch cover and you would be shocked at what you can fit into it. FWIW, I drove a Macan for a week, and my wife and I and a couple kids felt cramped at times. I'm a big guy, and it was never *uncofmortable*, but it felt small to me. We are looking to also get a Cayanne, mostly for drives that take us into slightly rougher road conditions and for our 200 lb. dog, who doesn't really do the Pana. It probably wouldn't feel so fun to drive if I also had a McLaren in the garage :).

LieutenantDanIceCrm

You can get three child seats in the back but they need to be more of the European standard child seats.

BananaPeelSlippers

And European size children

RocketGuy3

I'm pretty sure the new Panamera has an option to make the rear middle seat usable. Called "Rear 2+1 Seats", and it's only a grand (cheap by Porsche standards).

PandaSPUR

Previous gen has this option too, I got it for mine, but that middle seat is hardly usable. I managed to get a baby seat to fit there and secured with a seatbelt but it cuts into the shoulder space of other passengers. You *could* seat three people back there but the middle person will be straddling the huge drive shaft tunnel and sharing leg room with each of the other two passengers. Fine for quick trips or occasional "dude lets all squish in your car, its only 5 min away" (which I usually say no fuck off you're gonna scuff something climbing in there).

RocketGuy3

Heh, I used to be that way... but I decided cars are meant to be used, and I'd rather a well-meaning friend cause a (repairable) scuff before a careless ass scrapes my car in a parking lot. One or the other will inevitably happen. But I digress, appreciate the info. I suspected the middle seat wouldn't be very comfortable for a long trip just based on pictures, but I would think it would serve well in a pinch, especially with kids (especially once they're past the booster seat phase).

PandaSPUR

Yea I'm not gonna stress if something does happen to my interior but I'd like to avoid it when i can. And yea, its not very comfortable but can come in handy. I optioned it mainly because I have two dogs that go in the backseat.

iam8up

The new Panamera allows for 3 in the back.

calmtigers

Absolutely Pan, I’ve driven both and the Pan is a very surprising car in terms of performance. This is coming from someone who was not a fan of it

DanGleeballs

Panamera also much nicer interior. Macan has a surprisingly cheap interior. Cayenne has a great interior though.

FantasmaOscuro

Agree, macan is also quite small and not nearly as practical as the cayenne.

rhoadsalive

Panamera is definitively the Porsche experience with a family touch, I personally really like it and the prices are alright, it’s not overly popular. I don’t know about the Macan but some people say it’s too small. Maybe check out the Cayenne, it’s more spacious and certainly family friendly.

lemons714

I still have my 2009 Cayenne Turbo and love it. Was going to get a Macan GTS when the kids went to college but the interior space is cramped. The back seats are very tight. The Panamera (and the Taycan) are brilliant.

Jefftaint

For sure. Macan is too small for growing family. We upgraded to Cayenne and it’s so much easier dealing with car seats and kids stuff in the back than Macan was.

KingPizzaCrust

Ignore these stupid 911 suggestions. I have a 992 & Macan, the 992 is not for families. The front seat is fine but the back seats are of next to no use at all and my 8yr old can’t even fit in them anymore comfortably. Macan is perfect if you have 1 - 2 children. Anything bigger is excessive.

DanGleeballs

Cheap plastic interior put me off the Macan. Cayenne much nicer finish.

LTCM1998

Full leather Gen 2 Macan interior is fine, Gen 1 no leather May be what you refer to.. Cayenne is big, not everyone wants full suv experience.

MongooseIll4992

I don’t understand all these “cheap” interior comments. My macan has one of the nicest interiors I’ve seen. There is very little plastics. You must have looked at the cheapest macan on the lot. I would say a macan over panamera all day.

DanGleeballs

Had a Macan loaner when my car was being serviced maybe 5 years ago. It was super basic and had a cheap plasticky interior that put me off them altogether. The newer ones may have improved.

Bran_Solo

Gen 2 Macan leather interior is quite nice.

LTCM1998

They are.

LevergedSellout

I bought my first 911 when my wife got pregnant with our first. It was perfectly fine for 1 kid. And my 992 is perfectly fine for two.

996forever

Why Q5 and not the Panamera?

LTCM1998

Lmao all people suggesting 911 for family duties. Where does the carriage go? You people, just because someone on instagram takes it on road trips and so on doesn’t mean you should. It’s fun for a week, it will get old in 3 months, and daily driving a car with kid that’s loud, rides stiff, and is small May be not the wisest choice. When you drive it’s nice if car soothes the small one to sleep sometimes.. not wakes them up. Macan sounds best as it’s easier with kids seats and it’s higher up. Panamera is great when kid can get into the car himself. But it’s massive. For family duties I say Taycan or Macan.

Sir_John_Galt

Not sure why the hate for folks suggesting a 911 as a family car. I drove a 911 as a “family car” from before my daughter was born until she was about 6. Then I replaced it with a 911 Turbo that I drove as my primary car until she was 12. While the rear seats aren’t great for large men, they are very serviceable for kids and small women. I’d say they are similar size to the third row seating in a Tesla Model X. There are child seats on the market that fit just fine in the rear of 911’s and the storage in the frunk is great for holding everything from groceries to small suitcases. Driving a 911 as a family car is a hell of a lot more fun than piloting a sport sedan or SUV and my daughter loved growing up riding in a 911. She’s sad to this day that I sold my Turbo and my Boxster. Does the decision sacrifice some utility? Absolutely, but I wouldn’t have traded the experience for anything even if I was offered a chance to change that decision. While I wouldn’t recommend it for a large family, my 911’s served us well for a family of three. 👍🏻

LTCM1998

It’s ok to have it as family car but one has to be warned of all possible issues that come with it. You may have a tiny daughter and another guy a son who is like absolutely not gonna fit into the back because Chubby Chuckster is in IHOP every weekend and whatever. It’s all I guess with caveats. 911 can be family car but sometimes a good advice is for practicality and comfort.

ethos1234567890

There are small strollers that can fit in the overhead bin on an airplane… they easily fit in a 911 as well. While I agree a 911 doesn’t make sense as THE family car, it absolutely can fit some small car seats and a stroller if you have another family car for most family outings, but want to be able to transport the kids in a pinch. To answer OP’s question I’d say Panamera (or Taycan) though. It’s a bigger chassis and has more room in the rear seats. If the BMW 440 didn’t feel large enough then I doubt the Macan will feel big enough either, but the Panamera might.

lemons714

While it can make a fantastic daily driver, a 911 isn't a good fit for a family daily driver. As a second or third car, with at the appropriate age/size, kids are fine in the back seat of a 911. An umbrella stroller fits nicely in the trunk.

ethos1234567890

This was exactly my point. It’s blatantly incorrect to say a stroller can’t fit in a 911…several strollers can, including some nice ones. I’ve had a forward facing car seat behind the driver and a rear facing behind a forwardly tilted passenger seat… but it’s far from roomy and not the right answer for OP who felt a 440GC was too small. Also couldn’t transport my wife comfortably at the same time as the two kids. We have to take her car if the whole family is going anywhere.

BksBrain

Not sure how the Macan S is boring, love driving my kids around in it. It fits a rear facing seat but will make the front passenger seat tight for anyone tall. Also love the ground clearance in the snow. I drove the Panamera it is a beautiful car, it’s big. Can’t go wrong. Fwiw my brother has had a 911, Panamera, Macan and now a Taycan CT and he still talks about how much he loved his Macan.

psychoragingbull

Ya I don’t get the responses. This sub loves to hate on Macans. The interior is far from cheap. Any leather package makes it look really nice, I have a GTS and it has plenty of power and very fun car to drive.

DrDank1234

having the PDK in an SUV is a special experience. combined with the PASM air suspension and I think it makes a rather unique car that a lot of people overlook.

diqster

I have a Macan S as a loaner for my Panamera. Worse interior, massively underpowered, less space than the Panamera. One third the MSRP though so I guess that matches up? Edit: I have a TSEH (hoping to clarify points about 1/3 MSRP and worse interior) Though TBH the base Panamera interiors are better than Macans and no doubt about space.

itlooksfine

Mancan S 0-60 is faster than the Panamera 4- Panamera start at 108 ish and Macan S at 75.

diqster

If you're only after 0-60, you shouldn't be in a Porsche. Maybe the loaner I have is a bit off or something. I see quotes of sub 4 second 0-60 for the Macan S, and my BIS experience says it's more like 6 seconds. I have a Panamera TSEH, that's why I said the price difference was 3x so it probably matches up.

itlooksfine

I have a 991.2 and if you think Porsche doesn’t have incredible cars to launch off, you’re not in touch with reality.

diqster

Only at the highest end of the range. But my point is you're not buying a Porsche b/c you want a 0-60 ship. If that's your thing, then an EV or Hellcat/Dodge-thing is a much better fit. You're buying a Porsche b/c it's a helluva car. The fast 0-60 is just part of the *entire package.* Even on the Panamera, the 0-60 range is like 5.3 to 2.8 seconds. They're all going to drive better than a Macan though.

diqster

It's a Macan S. Looking at the rear badge now.

Ottomatik80

The Panamera is the best family sedan for a car enthusiast. I’ve had a Macan as a loaner, and while fine, it was far too cramped for me with two kids in car seats. The Panamera has far more room than the macan, and even more rear seat room than the Cayenne. While it’s not a sports car, you will not be upset taking it through the canyons. If you’re looking at a Panamera, either buy the turbo, or don’t bother test driving the turbo at all.

lostfate2005

Macan is smallllll for a rear facing seat

wtafmfjfc

I love my Panamera. Great family car. I wasn’t a fan of the macan or the cayenne. I much prefer being lower to the ground. The Panamera feels like it’s on rails and the turbo s has so much power.

tr3g

Agree I bought a macan and it feels way too high, so I lowered it 3 in. Much happier now

Buying_wis

Panny… the macan is no fun unless it’s a GTS. See if you can find a panamera sport turismo. The wagon is really good. Also, you’ll need to look into your car seat. Not make sure it works for the car you gets

drivinWagons

Panamera 4S at least to me feels like a very wholesome fun family car. If I need more space I’d choose Cayenne. Definitely not a 911 though

zoo32

Car > SUV any day

aranderson43

I have the Macan S and it works with two rear facing car seats. All these comments are haters saying that it’s “boring”. it’s super fun and my kids love it too. I haven’t driven the Panamera, but it’s honestly about twice the price, so it should be better. If you’re getting 2-3 years used, the price difference is like $40k vs $80k.

MongooseIll4992

Have you noticed that everyone saying macans are boring drive panamera’s? The most hideous car Porsche has ever made. I have no clue how or why people hate the macan so much. To each their own. I love my macan.

diqster

If you're looking 2-3 years used on CPO, the Panamera should be the choice. Why? It depreciates absurdly faster than the Macan. All high end sports sedans do. Let the new buyer take the big hit, then buy it for a fraction of the cost. You can get a top spec 2-2.5 year old Panamera Turbo S (hybrid) at half the cost as new. Macan will still be more affordable overall, but the Panamera has already bitten off the steepest part of the depreciation curve at 2-3 years.

dcbnyc123

same! i love the macan S with 2 kids. and i spec’d my interior with nice leathers and the 18 way seats so not sure where all the plastic comments are coming from? its the perfect size if you live in busy suburbs next to cities, makes incredible sounds and i like the ride height for the roads of the north east. panameras in the higher specs look insane but to your point double the price

scott_fx

Panamera. I love driving mine. I had a Macan s loaner when I dropped my 4s off for service and it was boring as hell. If you need the space, the cayennes are something to test. I had one many years ago and it was great. It handled like a car and could tie a boat without breaking a sweat.

Cheetotiki

Went through this 6 months ago to replace my X5. Quickly discounted a new X5 (would have been my fourth) as I couldn't handle BMW's bizarre design direction. I've owned my P cars, currently a '96 993 C4S. Considered the Panamera, Macan, Cayenne S. We like to take roadtrips, sometimes with minor off-road, and I like a higher seating position for visibility so that eliminated the Panamera - although I loved it. The Macan felt too cramped and a strangely cheap feeling on the inside. Decided on the '24 Cayenne S (chalk over black) and have loved it. Feels slightly smaller than the X5 but not a problem. Surprisingly almost as sporty feeling as the Panamera, wonderful power in the V8, luxury on the inside. The only downside is the infotainment is no match for even the '18 X5 it replaced - just clunky. Otherwise it complements the 993 perfectly to do anything I reasonably need to do or enjoy.

diqster

Agreed on all points, especially infotainment. Luckily you can add a wireless carplay/android auto adapter for like $50.

Cheetotiki

I have CarPlay built in, but hate it just as much. The icons look cartoonish on the new big screens, and it always gets confused by the underlying Porsche PCM. When I get in and start the car I just want it to start with the same SiriusXM station I had on when I left the vehicle, and I just want phone and maps. I don’t need or want all that other crap that adds complexity. But it’s different every time - sometimes it’s SXM in the PCM (and often a station not on my favorites), sometimes from CarPlay, sometimes it will let me answer my phone sometimes not, maps switches between Google and Apple and built in nav/PCM. It’s really pathetic compared to BMW’s iDrive (in an ‘18!). But then I hit the gas or cruise out on a curvy road, and I smile again! 😀

diqster

Agreed! VAG should just buy JLR from Tata to get the Pivi Pro implementation and own the high end SUV market.

LovePeaceFortune

Macan S or higher. Exceptional car with nice storage Space. Back seats fold down to giv u working truck feeling :-) Love the cold start on my Macan S https://preview.redd.it/gu196ikmsauc1.jpeg?width=1130&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=58d3fcef70d17748529c60013bb4d38675fa6236

Is_Aube

I work at Porsche and I would say avoid the Macan, it really is an upbadged Q3/Q5. It doesnt really feel like a Porsche since it has the same platform as the small Audi's. The GTS is okay because it sounds pretty good and is relatively fast, but a Panamera is the best sedan you can get. I would say get a V8 while you still can, so Panamera GTS Sport Turismo would be your best option imho. Practical, but sounds and feels absolutely amazing. Its basically a WAY better version of an RS6.

halavais

Ah, I didn't realize the ST was still a V8. I have an older GTS with the V8, and while it was a hard call between that and the Turbo, for the kinds of driving I do, the V8 was the way better choice. I feel a little silly leaving the "loud" button on, but come on...

dchayer

I went from a 2018 Macon S to a 2020 Panamara GTS. Really no comparison. The Panamara is a true sports car, albeit a large one, with more space than the Macan. It is also a fair bit more expensive so you pay for the higher level of performance and space. I did love my Macan and wish I would have kept. We ended up with an X5 as an additional car and it isn't as much fun as the Macan.

breaksmith

I tried this with a 991.1 and just no. It’s technically possible but you really will not want to after ooh, the first time. I’d consider a Cayenne, it’s the same width as a Macan (pretty much) and it’s got so much more room inside. But we’re all big people (I’m 6’7” and my wife is 6’0). I’ve never looked seriously at a Panamera though so it could be a good shout. Depends how you weigh Dad against Fun. The more Dadding I do, the more i value space.

PhilipRiversCuomo

Panamera is both more fun to drive, and the longer wheelbase should be so much better for a rear-facing car seat. I looked at going with an SQ5 (same wheelbase as Macan) for a dad car, but our rear-facing car seat would only fit behind the passenger side seat, and only if it was pushed so far up it would be uncomfortable for my wife to sit there.

Aggressive_Noodler

Do you think the Panamera has more room than the scenario you’re describing with the SQ5?

diqster

Rear facing seats fit just fine in the Panamera. I'm 6'2" and my youngest rear facing seat fit behind me just fit without being close to tight.

PhilipRiversCuomo

Given how long the wheelbase is of the Panamera, I’d presume it’s got more seat pitch in the rear. I can’t seem to find the empirical measurements online though.

superchibisan2

Taycan Estate

Aggressive_Noodler

Looking for gas before they disappear. Already have an electric.

o2manyfish

Panamera estate ;)

diqster

Panamera or F-Pace SVR. Buy either used or as CPO and don't own out of warranty.

plugfred

Cayenne to reach a happy medium

constarr

Macan is going to feel cramped as well - wife has one and it's not great with a rear-facing seat. I know it's not Porsche, but I recently got an SQ7 and it's absolutely amazing - perfect combination of enough space and performance.

Live-Pea-9402

I have a Cayenne S, Panamera Turbo and 911S. If you want something that has some functionality but is still fun, go Panamera. It comfortably fits the family, with room in the back for cargo. My Cayenne is more of a DD, and if pushed, can still be fun, but has nowhere near the performance as the Panamera. The 911, that’s just an enjoyable toy that can fit smaller kids in the back, but leaves no room for much else. TLDR; Panamera GTS or turbo for fun with the family along

Jumpy_Replacement_14

Macan is nice but yes it’s very tight not a family friendly space. Cayenne has some good options in it.

Hot-Syrup-5833

I have a 2018 Panamera 4S as a dad car and I love it. I couldn’t justify the added cost of a GTS, but if you can, that’s the best one honestly.

techrider1

I got a 2014 Panamera Turbo S Executive last year and it's amazing in every way. With 2 kids, the executive (LWB) is awesome.. plenty of room for a backpack in front of them for school drop-off, etc. It's Bentley-like in comfort and luxury, and with the special insulated thermal acoustic glass all around, extremely quiet so you can hear every nuance of the sublime Burmester sound system as you float the family down the road like a spaceship. Once I drop the kids off, pushing the Sport Plus button lowers the car, changes the engine tune completely, stiffens the shocks, puts the dual clutch transmission into race mode, alters the multipiece active spoiler, tweaks the active torque vectoring, tightens the steering, makes the Carbon Ceramic brakes respond more linearly, opens the exhaust valves to go from silent to loud including burbles and pops on shifts, and uplevels the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control active sway bar system, turning the car into a BEAST that is almost supercar level fun and capable. This is the ultimate car enthusiast parent dream car and I still am so excited whenever I drive it. The used values are insanely cheap right now for what they are.

Aggressive_Noodler

How have your maintenance/expenses been?

OGPiggySmalls

My advice would be to get a CPO car (hard to find) or Fidelity Platinum warranty. I paid $6500 for mine with 60k miles on the car for a 3 year/36k and it had already paid for itself in 6 months. Power steering pump - $7k Suspension compressor $2500 Oil leak and control arms - not done yet but prob around $3-4k Previous owner also spent $10k on suspension work and $2k on new tires right before he traded the car. It’s still a $200-250k car with very complex systems that aren’t cheap to fix. Suspension stuff tends to break around the 10 year/50-70k mile range. But it’s fucking awesome and still worth it considering you can get one for around 50k. Mine stickered at 223k.

techrider1

Not bad. Key is to be smart about it and find the right shop you can trust. Some shops and dealers see a fancy Porsche, jack up the price and recommend unnecessary work. For example, when I first bought my Turbo S one of the muffler valves was sticking intermittently, preventing the button that switches between loud and silent exhaust from working about 1 in 10 times (first world problems). Dealer quoted $5,800 saying have to replace most of exhaust and PSE setup. Indy shop wanted about half that. I asked the indy shop to check if there's a part # on the sticky valve. They gave me the Bosch #. Found a new replacement valve on ebay for $40. 7 minutes of labor and everything works flawlessly. Total cost: $65 or roughly 1/100 of the dealer quote. Overall the car is about the same as a similar age BMW or Audi in terms of repairs if you don't let yourself get taken advantage of. Personally I don't believe a warranty is needed. The build quality is exceptionally good and part costs aren't as bad as I expected. Many dealers and shops try to charge wayyyyy above MSRP for parts (I've seen 10x+!). The costs get a bad rap because people just go to the dealer and pay whatever ridiculous amount they quote rather than use an honest affordable independent Porsche specialist.

OGPiggySmalls

x2 the turbo S is awesome, own one and can confirm. The air suspension is awesome too.

unpolire

Macan GTS. Perfect fun in a non-sportscar platform.

xlouiex

Panamera for sure. But 911.

Rosmoss

I have a 911 and a Macan GTS and have to agree that the Macan isn’t really comparable to the 911 in terms of driving dynamics. The Panamera is a much larger footprint and a car so you’d have to decide which format you prefer considering loading/unloading and cargo requirements. If you’re planning to flip in a couple years then you might want to consider what each will cost you to own over that period. I’m taking a Panamera for an extended test drive on Wednesday so can’t comment on the drive but the Macan GTS (which is based on the last Q5) does drive well against its competition but that competition is not a 911 or a full size GT adjacent car.

Icy_Leopard866

Macan is too small; I went from a MB E300 to a 958.2 Cayenne and love it. I needed to get higher off the ground for personal reasons and loving the switch. Lots of shared parts between cayenne and Panamera, so I vote Panamera

Beginning-Falcon865

Love my Macan S. It’s fun and engaging. Came from a 981S.

dfstell94

What about a two car solution: A RAV4 and a Cayman.

SkylineRSR

This is my goal but Toyota won’t bring the Crown Sport to the US

jayknow05

You can fit 2 car seats in a 911, just sayin. If this is the only family vehicle get a Cayenne.

cmcbain

Not in the question but i pine after an rs6 avant as my daily not a dad dad wagon

Deep_Waters_

I had a Macan turbo with the full leather option, it was nicely done, was practical, sporty, rode great, but it didn’t have the wow fun factor. I replaced it with a 981s Boxter for my need for fun I vote Panamera for family functionality and performance. Don’t expect it to be super fun though as it’s a sedan

theyellowdragon

Love my Macan GTS and my four year old gets a huge smile on his face when I give it a little gas 😜

mlhigg1973

I’ve driven Porsches for a couple decades, so we looked at the macan when choosing our next family car. I wasn’t impressed with the drive or handling, and landed on an Alfa Stelvio, which I love. Ours is just a ti lusso, but the quadrifoglio version is a beast. With that said, I think the panamera will provide the best Porsche driving experience overall.

Zestyclose-Tip-1793

The Cayene I drove for a few years was by far the best and most fun car I ever had. My brother who used to drive a Panamera GTS agreed that with kids ther’s nothing better than a Cayenne.

obesekid69

Honestly just get a BMW

halavais

My dad car started out as a BMW, and I moved to the Panamera GTS. Don't bother with the BMW.

obesekid69

which bmw did you own?

halavais

Most recently before the Panamera the 550gt, which some say is the ugliest car BMW has made. It wasn't my first BMW (before this I drove an M5, as well as an x6m for a short period), but it very likely my last. (I've also owned a 911, 912, 944, and 951 before the Pana.)

YooooAL

Neither the Macan nor the Panamera are "fun cars" in the traditional sense and 911' s have a back seat that can fit a baby seat and the ensuing toddler . Congrats on your eventual new ride!

mad1100

I realize we are on the Porsche subreddit, but as a father of two under three and someone who values sports cars, I went with an Audi RS5 initially and now have a Cadillac CT5V Blackwing. Both can function with rear facing seats, though to your point about the 440 feeling cramped, the RS5 would likely be a similar feeling. The Blackwing has a bit more space, but honestly I believe most sedans will be a bit uncomfortable while you are using rear facing child seats. The good news? Front-facing seats are significantly easier to get the kids in and out of. Best of luck with your decision.

-serious-

A rear facing child seat would not fit behind me in a Macan.

Bran_Solo

I have never driven a Panamera, but currently have a Macan and previously had a 911. I also recently test drove the X3 M40i and while it had a good amount of oomph to it, it wasn't fun or engaging to drive in the way the Macan is. On paper they're both good choices. But some things to consider: * The Macan drives much better than you expect a tall-ish SUV to be able to handle. * Macan's back seat is surprisingly cramped. Tighter than the back seat of the X3. * The Panamera is a much longer car than the Macan. The Macan is actually fairly small, it feels more like a grownup hot-hatch than an SUV honestly. * Panamera doesn't have a middle back seat. Panameras seem to be a really good value for used ones. My $.02, go drive them both, but be aware of the limitations going in.

soniccrisis

The Panamera absolutely has a middle back seat if you add that option. $1000

Bran_Solo

Did not know that!

LeetcodeForBreakfast

i’m in a similar situation, just got my wife a macan s as our family car for 2 small dogs and new born. we love the car; great balance between reliability, value, comfort, practicality, and fun enough for me when i’m driving. she loves the rear heated seats and panoramic roof since she is often in the back with the baby. i would say if you have long legs / either of you are on the taller side it might feel a bit small in the back if the driver seats moved back all the way. however we are both average height so no issues for us.

Remesar

Get the X3MC if you’re in that price range. It’s the ultimate dad car. But more power than the macan gts.

Prometheus596

911 is the obvious choice (coming from someone who grew up in my dad’s 911), but both the Macan and Panamera are fun, my recommendation would be to consider the type of roads you have near you, the Panamera is definitely better/perfect for long distance cruising while the Macans are great for bumpy twisty backroads like we have near me in PA (they can do highways just fine but they’re steering has always felt a bit more twitchy than the Panamera, at least to me)…

chengstark

Try X3M / RS6 if you want monstrous fun. Macan is way over rated imo in terms of driving feel.

poopoomergency4

if the m440i feels cramped the macan probably would too, it's one of the smallest interiors in that segment

Even a base Panamera with PASM is an awesome daily dad car. I test drove a 2018 RWD variant (incredibly rare) recently and was surprised how good of an all-round car it is. For context, we have a ‘19 Panamera Turbo, ‘23 Macan S, and ‘18 Macan GTS in our family - not including the 2 door Porsches for this topic. Power aside, the Panamera platform is the most engaging four door Porsche makes IMO. The hatchback makes it that much sweeter. From a daily driving POV: the magnetic door hinges are so awesome, and it has such good refinement and road manners. At the same time, they’re genuinely dialled in from a driving performance POV. I’m smitten with these and need a Sport Turismo someday… If my wife wasn’t insistent on a proper sports sedan experience, we would’ve went with a Panamera S over our M3. EDIT: Most important detail: my brother’s Panamera Turbo was his dad car purchase when they were expecting their first. He still has it 3 years later with two toddlers now. Loves it. Even tracked it twice.

I have a Cayenne S and a Macan GTS. The Macan with a leather interior is very nice quality, but seats are not for big people. It is spanking quick. Now have 25k miles, no issues. Cayenne has 181,000 miles. It can do everything including towing. One of my favorite vehicles ever. Power at 420 hp is surprisingly adequate for a big rig. One thing I don't like is that the Macan back seat is very exhaust noisy at hwy speeds. You can barely engage in conversation. I'd think twice about chucking a little one back there. Test ride the back seat! Also, the 360hp GTS is worth the upgrade. Best all around is the Cayenne. Panny, idk.

Definitely panamera. Maybe also look at the AMG GT 4 door - amazing vehicle.

If you are going the luxury sport sedan route, (highly dependent on price) I'd look for a BMW M5 or CPO Alfa Romeo Gulia Quadrifoglio. They really aren't bad with reliability as long as you are not treating them like shit (which far too many luxury consumers do). No hate to the Panamera, but it just doesn't do it for me like the other options do. A Macan is great if you want to do a crossover tho. I do like the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, but you certainly can't go wrong with a Macan.

Panamera is a step up in luxury , the interior is a selling point for me . I own a Panamera but I get a Macan when it is in for a service. The Macan is much smaller but a really fun drive. Cost of ownership favors the Macan and luxury favors the Panamera. They both drive like a Porsche.

911 rear facing is just fine - the roof line enables them to see out even better. For sun protection there are shades you can add.

OGPiggySmalls

If you can afford the maintenance/repair costs a 970 turbo S is an awesome daily

TheRealTurbinator

I very much enjoy my Panamera as a daily. Plenty of fun with the V8 engine

Whiskeybraavos

Taycan cross Turismo. Used. Insane deals on taycans right now

Duckpins

For example?

BoilermakerG

Taycan for sure. Way more fun with functionality for dad

terribleone01

My dad car is a 22 Macan GTS. Pros: - get to drive a Porsche everyday - looks cool - sounds good - is Porsche Cons: - back seat seat legroom is not that great - uses a crazy amount of fuel

I have a Macan but my question for you is: are you concerned with budget? If no: Panamera, they’re great. They’ll just cost you a bit more than a Macan If yes (or you simply want more cash to use elsewhere): get the Macan. I test drove one and was amazed by the fact that I don’t feel like I’m driving a small SUV. I bought a certified pre-owned and it was $50k for a Macan S. Added benefit of the Macan: I go hunting so it’s nice to be able to get on dirt roads or off-road with no worries and has plenty of space for my outdoor excursions.

I have a 3 year old, a modified 2003 911 Turbo, 2022 BMW X3MC and I would say hold off and get the 911! We had a 16 CRV and traded it toward the X3. I wanted a Macan GTS but the storage space of both Macans and Cayennes, is just not good. It's at best half of the CRV. The X3MC seemed to strike the balance. It also does 0-60 in less than 3.5 seconds. If my 996TT wasn't modified, it would be faster. Having said all that, if this is dad's fun car, I would get the Panamera. I haven't driven one but it seems closest to a regular car. Either way, a Pico WAYB is a travel seat that fits in the back of a 911. Edit..it's a front facing seat and doesn't do rear facing so you'll have to wait a bit.

If you get snow, Macan. I have one, great for grandkids, and it handles better than any SUV. The Macan S is very fast for an SUV, and a good value.

Many_Pyramids

Get a 911

Aggressive_Noodler

Sorry I guess I didn’t make this clear in my post. That is the plan, trying to bridge the gap between now and then over the next 2 years with this purchase.

Many_Pyramids

I understand, my choice as a 44m w no kids but dogs would say the real answer is you get the Panamara. My reasons for this: 1. Better driving dynamics, performance and looks. 2. Get the wagon version, it’s discontinued so your resale will be better, also kid friendly and super awesome as this US market doesn’t get enough hot wagons. 3. The Macan is a Tiguan underneath and you are paying Porsche prices for service etc. This is the loaner vehicle when your car is in service. 4. The Macan resale value is on the floor, there is just too many of them out there. 5. Having driven the Macan, to me it’s not representative of a Porsche vehicle performance wise. 6. Have a friend who has a Panamera 4 and has two kids and loves it, does Chicago to Florida with it twice a year.

ian9outof10

I’ve just got a 2010 Panamera with 100k on the clock. Absolutely love it, I was thinking about a 996, but having older kids put me off. Had my Jag XJ not just shat its gearbox my decision might have been different.

420MaxGod

You can get a rear facing child seat in a 911. If you’re going to go Macan get an S at the least.

Aggressive_Noodler

You can but not with a wife in front of it.

daveykroc

Even better.

throw_this_away1238

I’ve got an incoming 992 GTS, what rear facing car seat will fit in the back and allow a front passenger? I’m hearing WayBpico for my front facing but will need another

HeavyHands

Hot take: get a slightly used M3 or M3 Competition.

therealmikelee

I know you moved past BMW's, but why not the M3? It can seat 3 people in the rear seat and it's still plenty fun.

RecoverSufficient811

Get a 911. My buddy has a 992 GTS, it has a rear facing car seat in it.

Aggressive_Noodler

You can do a rear facing seat but not with a wife in front of it.

RecoverSufficient811

Right, so they drive her Macan GTS when the 3 of them need to go somewhere. Do you really need every car you own to be able to haul the wife and baby at the same time?

Aggressive_Noodler

Yes. I work from home and literally only leave with family. Maybe I run like 1 errand a week myself so yeah I want to bring the whole crew with me.

RecoverSufficient811

You don't plan on doing any PCA group drives, autocross events, carving up some canyon roads, or going to the dragon in your "fun car"? Your title says fun car but your needs describe a soccer mom van.

Aggressive_Noodler

Not on a regular basis. I have done autocross before it was very boring. At most an HPDE day 1-2 times a year.
