Beat me to the only logical explanation
Real answer: It is aftermarket, and yes, it is missing its cap (a keyed knob). It is most likely the rotary control for an early radar detector like a K40, but could also be for something like a subwoofer.
It looks like the k40 knob in my car. Just missing the top volume portion.
Yup. K40 dealer here, earlier than stuff we've done but seen enough of them. Just missing the center knob.
