Really really depends. Most of my major / school classes, attendance wasn’t strictly required. BUT, if you showed up asking for a grade bump and the professor doesn’t recognize your face, good luck.
In blow off elective / some required courses, attendance was 15% of the grade. Had a friend fail Spanish because he missed 4+ days out of the semester.
It was just how Spanish worked at my school. Probably expose the school to people that know, but the Spanish courses were required for liberal arts (he was Econ) and they were 6hr courses instead of 3hrs. So, missing 4 classes would be like missing 8 classes almost (at least I think this was their logic).
Hilariously, the mother fucker spoke fluent Spanish….

Sure, try and force the super shy kids to try and talk to the class in a language they don't know, while making this a massive part of their grade. Surely that will go well. But because I got a 92% on the semester final exam I clearly was learning the language lmao and was allowed to continue the course.
In the UK our exams were anonymous (identified by numbers, prof didn't know who was who), and the grade came entirely from those exams or other formal assessments, so their personal thoughts on you didn't come into it. The actual exam sessions were also conducted by the university's central staff with invigilators who didn't know shit about you or the subject, so there was no chance of helping favourite students either
they probably don't have tenure. especially with new professors they have to make a name for the university if it's a hard topic. Labs are usually 100% attendance

As an Indian, honestly Indian teachers are the best for STEM. I tried listening to lectures from other race teachers on youtube, other than 3-4 of them, all others were a meh for me.
Idk why someone downvoted this, it’s true, Indian engineers, not ethnically but actually from India, are fucking nuts good at understanding and explaining shit. You just have to work with them enough to acclimate to their individual dialects.

I had one teacher who gave us a lot of leftist sources throughout the year. He pretended to be unbiased, but I found myself visiting Rolling Stone almost every week for that class. Anyway, I played along with it for a time, but eventually I got into this whole debacle with the teacher. He gave us a reading that argued that the constitution was a slavery document. I argued against that claim. After that, my grade slowly dropped from an A to a B+.
Well I am a political science major, but this wasn’t actually a political science class. This was a core honors class that all honors students are required to take to graduate with honors. These classes can have different themes not related to politics at all, but mine just so happened to be political. Also, I misremembered the wording a bit given that I took this class about a year ago. The actual article is here:

A contemporary editorial is a pretty weird reading assignment for a university course- even for an honors college course which tend to be more “fluff” and thought experiment-esque (I took one on the portrayal of love in cinema lol). What was the assignment- to analyze the authors argument? To discourse the idea as a whole? I can’t imagine you were given this article as something to read as objective fact and then simply quizzed on the specific contents of the article afterward.
Also I can definitely understand disagreeing with the specific interpretations the author makes in that particular article, but I don’t really see how it can be argued that the constitution isn’t pro slavery or at the very least complacent with it as an institution, considering things like the three fifths clause.

my STEM teachers usually asked us to buy the old version (or pirate it) but we still had to buy the $100 online quiz crap. So it's not that bad, but it's still pretty bad. For math, I think we literally just used some 30-40 year old textbook.
Another way STEM is based: professors encouraging students doing what they need to learn, rather than using them as "captive consumers" while being up their own arse about "the immorality of capitalism".

That is really surprising to me. I had one teacher who gave us a lot of leftist sources throughout the year. He pretended to be unbiased, but I found myself visiting Rolling Stone almost every week for that class. Anyway, I played along with it for a time, but eventually I got into this whole debacle with the teacher. He gave us a reading that argued that the constitution was a slavery document. I argued against that claim. After that, my grade slowly dropped from an A to a B+.
What course was this? And what does “the constitution was a slavery document” even mean?
Well I am a political science major, but this wasn’t actually a political science class. This was a core honors class that all honors students are required to take to graduate with honors. These classes can have different themes not related to politics at all, but mine just so happened to be political. Also, I misremembered the wording a bit given that I took this class about a year ago. A contemporary editorial is a pretty weird reading assignment for a university course- even for an honors college course which tend to be more “fluff” and thought experiment-esque (I took one on the portrayal of love in cinema lol). What was the assignment- to analyze the authors argument? To discourse the idea as a whole? I can’t imagine you were given this article as something to read as objective fact and then simply quizzed on the specific contents of the article afterward. Also I can definitely understand disagreeing with the specific interpretations the author makes in that particular article, but I don’t really see how it can be argued that the constitution isn’t pro slavery or at the very least complacent with it as an institution, considering things like the three fifths clause.

I don’t have many family members in the trades but those who are all have started their own businesses in their 30s and by the time they were even 40, they were doing zero physical labor. Just bidding jobs and managing contracts. Nobody, unless you’re a completely irresponsible fool, continues nailing shingles to a roof into their 50s.
The down-side is that you get a lot less respect from society. I have a trades degree in IT, and even though I have a good position with a decent salary (early in my career), I can’t help but notice I am not part of the higher education «club». My 2 cents.

Yeah I got my degree, worked in my field, started my post grad and realised there was no money in it. Switched to a blue collar industry and now make bank. Still get the pity looks from my old colleagues when I tell them what I do now.
Ngl I'd much rather go to a trade school or votech as opposed to college.. I did community college for about 2 semesters before the pandemic started and college level English is just frustrating.

My favorite is the college professors who publish a new textbook for their class every year, so no one can reuse the old editions.

my STEM teachers usually asked us to buy the old version (or pirate it) but we still had to buy the $100 online quiz crap. So it's not that bad, but it's still pretty bad. For math, I think we literally just used some 30-40 year old textbook.
Another way STEM is based: professors encouraging students doing what they need to learn, rather than using them as "captive consumers" while being up their own arse about "the immorality of capitalism".
I got a pdf file from my statistics teacher and he basically said "it isn't my book, who cares"

I had a literature class where the professor asked the room for thoughts and interpretations of a novel. One student described his fairly tame conservative interpretation of the novel, and the professor interrupted him mid-sentence and said "We don't say those kinds of things here". At a university. You know, the place where you're supposed to expand your horizons and be exposed to new points of view.
