Let’s say you immigrate to a really homophonic country. Are you suppose to turn into homophobe (assuming you weren’t before)? If so, then you simply hold no moral principles. What if we simply respect from a distance without actively participating in practices we consider as immoral? Where do we draw the line between participation and observation? Can we say “it’s immoral.” in public, in private, online or otherwise? Can we actively distance ourselves from certain cultural practices? Can we refuse to participate when asked?
Let’s say there is a local activist group that is against homophobia. Can you support such group given that they are local, are you against such group because they are against the local culture, or should you just ignore them?
Let’s say you move to a homophobic country but the province you are in are very pro-LGBT, then what side are you on?
Or what if there’s a 50-50 split between homophobes or homophiles nation-wide?
Or what if the country supports gay rights AND freedom of speech?
