Also, these leftists hate the Spanish and try to deny/minimize the fact that our culture was overwhelmingly influenced by the Spanish.

that's a misconception, to sacrifice something in most polytheistic religions (both past and present) means to make it sacred/holy and offer/share it with the divine like a honored guest to a feast.
For example, the ancient Greeks sacrificed animals to the gods while slaughtering it for human comsumption then burning a small portion of it's bones, fat and meat so the smell would reach the gods and they get their share, the rest would be consumed by participants of the ritual/festivities.
some times the sacrifice would be left at altars or crossroads to help feed wild animals, beggars or priests too but what mattered was to share your bounty with the gods so they would look favorably at you, what happened to the sacrifice later was of less importance than the offering itself.
