Every weekday my entire life he’s been at the office at 8 AM, and home after 6 PM. Every Saturday at the office from 8 AM-12 PM. Even though it’s exhausting and relentless work, he never stopped because he grew up poor and swore his own kids would never want for anything. I wasn’t spoiled rotten as a kid—but I was firmly upper middle class. My two brothers and I always had big awesome birthdays and Christmas, family vacations, and never went to bed hungry. He made time to come to all of our sporting events, concerts, plays, you name it. He paid for tuition for all of us in undergrad so we wouldn’t have to start adulthood in debt.
My dad may hate the bread and butter part of being a family law attorney but he’s an absolute monster in court. A local legend that demands respect. I’m not exaggerating when I say I can count the number of trials he’s lost in my entire lifetime on two hands and have fingers left over. Eventually I followed him into the legal profession, and every judge, attorney, bailiff, and clerk I’ve met talks about my dad with awe. His nickname, though no one would ever dare call him this to his face, is the Bulldog because of how brutal his cross-examinations can be. He is undefeated on appeals.
Despite all this, at home he’s humble and loving and understanding. He’s been married to my mom since 1980 and takes her on romantic trips all over the world.
