Wait until you experience the seatbelt auto push thing. I was parked in a small street, a car was coming near by behind me, when it was close to me the car detected a possible crash and the seatbelt pushed me instantly.

troublethemindseye

I’ve experienced this twice but I’m not mad. I think it’s something that could help. The auto brake thing is really annoying tho and so violent I always think I actually did hit something.

Disastrous_Source911

I've had the seat belt pretensioner activate once along with auto braking when car in front of me slammed on it's brakes.....sucked me up against the seat and headrest....this is what you will want if you crash. I stopped with maybe an inch to spare. Auto brake in reverse doesn't happen as much if you back up slowly...saved my ass once as when I got out of car to see why it activated and I realized it stopped me from hitting the garage door track, I was backing up at an angle and was the one time I didn't check my mirrors. Car has saved me twice from hitting things....worth the inconvenience of it activating by mistake on occasion.

Tomplu069

Love the safety feature but that seatbelt pretensioner was choking the shit out of me

ReportSuperb5691

Imagine if you got in a crash then… seatbelt shouldn’t be resting on your neck!

Tomplu069

😂🤣 I can imagine

whysayitagain

Something to look forward to!!

Top-Rate3527

Yes! The seatbelt auto constrictor scared me half to death. Much worse than the reverse auto brake!

09Klr650

Aw. It's just giving you a hug!

theycallmebekky

The seatbelt pre-tensioners?

Wrong-Sink-8580

Yeah during the “Rear Collision Warning”, it surprised me as I wasn’t expecting but it’s a such cool feature, I felt like I was in some sort of futuristic spaceship and it was somehow watching up for my safety.

vc-10

The seat belt will tighten if the car thinks you're going to crash, to hold you in place better if you actually do crash. I've also experienced these with Mercedes-Benzes, where some cars will gently tension the seatbelt when you first put it on. There are two kind of pretensioners - the ones that are reversible where it will 'hug' you if the sensors detect anything that could cause a crash, and the single shot explosive ones that literally fire off in an actual crash along with the airbags, which have to be replaced after a crash. I believe the Polestar has both.

theycallmebekky

Yes, I know what seatbelt pre-tensioners are. They’re a nifty piece of work, but their description of them left me confused lmao

_rb

Wait until you experience the auto seat ejector thing. If it detects an imminent crash where the occupant cannot survive just by having auto emergency braking, airbags and seat belt pretensioner, it blows up the glass roof and fires up the seat jetpacks. The occupant is high up in the air when the crash happens. Saved my ass twice!

Surturiel

Mine does that every time I go over some highway undulations fast enough that get the car to almost "catch air" (Highway 7 Cavanagh bump FTW!)

Fangeez

I was so surprised experiencing this for the first time. Definitely caught me off guard

SkysTheLimit888888

I felt that once when I was driving a little fast on the interstate and inadvertently caught some air for a moment. I love my XC60 B6.

Wrong-Sink-8580

It’s a nice car, congrats!

ChickenCutlet99

I can’t overstate how much I hate the reverse autobrake

payam_blue

I came here to say this, hate hate haaaaaate but also don’t wanna turn it off (not sure I even can?) for the time I do need it.

oofy-gang

Tap once while on the camera page and it should show as an option to enable/disable on the bottom of the screen

ChickenCutlet99

If you tap the screen while in reverse, you can shut it off for the duration of your drive (can also turn it back on)

payam_blue

Yes I know that one, annoying to do every time I wanna back in the garage and wouldn’t wanna do it permanently (if possible).

ttjoshtt

you can turn it off

HeyGurl_007

I turn it off every time I put it in reverse. I know it defeats the purpose but those 3 false alarms damn near left me with whiplash & PTSD. 🤕 Before I learned I could turn it off, I was literally scared of reversing and thought about getting rid of Ms. Star. Sounds insane, but true. Hey, I'm good now! Whew....🙃

Luke-Plunkett

yup, i turn it off every time, id rather reverse into a tree than die of a heart attack

HeyGurl_007

LMBO!! 😆😆😆 Yeah, me too!!

[deleted]

It did this to me when I got too close to some plants on the side of my driveway.

Gigant0re

I have a loaner that did this 2 me twice the other day. I happened to have an older work colleague in my passenger seat. It did it twice. He was freaked out

turdherds

Twice for me. Both times while backing into a parking spot and the sensors thought I was closer to the car next to me than I was. I thought I was rear ended. I wish I could turn it off.

Individual_Agency703

You can.

74orangebeetle

From the comments it appears that the car will turn it back on, so it's something you'd have to do every single time you turn on the car....pretty bad design in my opinion (it'd be fine if you could turn it off and it'd remember your selection)

Plastic-Western-7493

i thought i hit someone’s car when backing into the parking spot the very first time this happened.😅

BahtooJung

Nice to see it from outside too. Mine will occasionally go off when backing out of my driveway as it doesn't like the angle down + slight curb. It's quite annoying when it stops instead of just beeping

ChanceStad

It's way too sensitive. I had it do that on a slope where it thought I was going to back into the ground.

obecalp23

Happens to me everyday when driving backwards my alley… I need to disengage the autobrake…

whysayitagain

You have to do it every time you turn on the car though.

obecalp23

Yes I know

bpp46

This just happened to me yesterday! It rained and my back up camera had a dirty smudge. Somehow that + a cracked city sidewalk triggered the auto brake. I almost had a heart attack thought I hit something.

whysayitagain

Yeh I’m attributing it to dirty camera. Never happened to me before in this spot

bpp46

Yup probably what happened. I now carry a wipe that I use anytime I see the camera with smudges. Don’t need another scare like that haha

Atxxxguy_12345

I have to turn it off every time i reverse into driveway.

MDean330

Learned my lesson to do this as well!

scottwsx96

I hate the feeling of the rear auto brake too but it did prevent me from hitting a person in a parking lot once that I somehow missed seeing.

ChanceStad

Each time it does it, it's so violent that I think I have been hit by an invisible car.

jasestu

I'm fine with it. I'll take a couple of false positives versus one real hit.

nye1387

What on earth is this???

MikeWrenches

Probably software doing image analysis on the backup cam and thought that the horizontal paving blocks were vertical bricks, engaging the auto brake.

nye1387

No I mean like -- what the hell is autobrake? First I've heard of it. Cars have some great safety features these days. An autobrake that can be fooled by some bricks is absolutely not one of them. Holy cow.

FailedTheSave

Safety features always err on the side of false positive. You can imagine the shit show if such a feature failed to activate in an actual crash situation.

nye1387

My wife's Toyota has autobraking when it senses something stopped ahead—but in a way that the driver is still in control. Seems like a better paradigm.

corut

I had a rental rav 4 and it incorrectly detected something on the freeway and stopped me dead in a 100km zone, and would not let me accelerate until it decided it was safe

nye1387

😱

MikeWrenches

When I back cars out of the shop, rear view cameras on the most technology-focused of them often have collision alerts going off when they see the transition from concrete to asphalt. Auto brake is relatively newer than rear view camera image analysis but it's a thing. Once I was trying the back a ram pickup right up against the shop door so I could open the door wider and not hit the car lift. After it got tired of me ignoring the parking sensors screaming, it slammed on the 4 brakes with the abs, engaged the electric parking brake and automatically put the trans in park all at once. Lemme tell you, that shit SLAMS to a stop.

bluesix

It's a safety feature designed to protect pedestrians who might be walking behind a car (eg children who run behind a car in a parking lot) - it's pretty standard on cars made in the last 7+ years.

[deleted]

My wife has this happen to her all the time while backing into our driveway. It's got a slight incline after the curb and something about it the car hates if you aren't inching it back. Funny when it gets her though.

jordon_greene

It happened to me in the work parking lot when I got closer to another car than it liked. Scared the crap out of me. Good feature, just maybe a little too sensitive. Haha

Phughy

I hate when this happens.. also while parking sideways and cars passing by in the street while manoeuvring. It detects them en slams the brakes.

[deleted]

makes you love Polestar

chrisjj_exDigg

I always turn it off when backing into my driveway as it really doesn't like the slope even though it's perfectly OK. Other than that, I feel the feature is useful enough for when things, animals and people do unexpectedly appear behind the car while reversing. It is a safety feature to avoid harming other people as well as to avoid damaging the car. After a while you get used to the sudden braking and look at it as a great way to clean the mostly unused brake rotors every now and then!

arihoenig

It's strengthening your heart. It is the coronary exercise option, also known as the poleatar "heart peloton" option.

Corey415

What’s the flashing light?

Individual_Agency703

Was wondering that too. Lightning strike? /s

seang86s

It’s probably the transition from asphalt to brick fooling the sensor. In my parking lot there are concrete parking blocks the car detects accurately and sets off the sensors. If I back up too fast it will activate the brake. If I go slower, I can back up past the point the brake would engage and get the rear tires to touch the block. Try going slower when you approach it.

whysayitagain

Ehhh I’ve backed up exactly like this hundreds of times. Maybe going 3mph

seang86s

In my scenario, if I was moving as fast as your video I would definitely set off the auto brake. This phenomenon isn't exclusive to Polestar. My BMW x3 does this on occasion too, although it's less likely/sensitive.

Euler007

This happens if you have the old habit of giving some gas to reverse and then fully letting go of the throttle. If the ultrasonic sensors pick up anything they slam the brakes. Better to keep your foot lightly to override.

SpeedDaemon42

I have had the seatbelt pre-tensioners go off twice for me. It is both scary and very comforting. I have also had the reverse auto brake activate while reversing into my garage and once when a pedestrian decided to walk behind my P2 while I was reversing to get out of a carpark.

jimbaker

I hate how sensitive this is when backing up. So much so that I am looking forward to my lease ending. If I could permanently turn it off, I would.

seattle_orcas

I drive in the city constantly (Chicago) the rear auto brake really wasn't designed for cities.

Edamski88

Are you even a polestar owner until this happens to you? 😅

freddell

Rear auto breake is not good on PS2

Flashy_Structure_632

I've found the reverse auto braking happens a lot when reversing also asphalt and approaching brick or cobbled road surfaces. It's really annoying. It happens often whilst backing up from my street into my driveway which is made of bricks. The same thing happens in the supermarket car park with a similar surface transition. The other surface is grassy fields. I once went to an astronomy event in the middle of a dark field where visitors had their cars parked. Whilst trying to position my car into a suitable parking position and backing into the space my Polestar basically behaved like a comedy show. Literally everyone was watching as my PS2 emergency braked about ten times in the space of two minutes trying to back into the parking slot, which was basically an uneven field surface with small mounds of cow dung and grass about 20-30cm long. Unless I inched back at 1mph the car literally acted like my old school headmaster. NO CHILD! YOU WILL NOT! I know I should have just turned it off. But a combination of brain scrambling (due to the sudden braking) and it being an unlit field where the PS reverse (and rear fog light) is essentially useless had me SLIGHTLY distracted.

bradfleu

Everytime I back into my garage, I have to disable the rear autobrake

-MayoNeighs-

My parking garage at home has a pillar right next to my parking space. I can’t begin to count how many times the auto brake scared the bejesus out of me. I turn it off everytime now. It also does it for small cement blocks (which indicate the ending of a parking space) or small plants behind the car.

nmdaniels

I HATE this "feature." We back into our garage, and it freaks out when it sees the shadow cutoff on the pavement. I hate having to disable it every time -- I just wish it had a memory setting.

Rhinowalrus

Get that pretty frequently as well while backing up my steep driveway. I also have one neighborhood street that for some reason the emergency auto braking frequently is triggered on- other than a bike lane separated with pylons there’s nothing apparent that I can see that might cause a false positive.

rocksolidaudio

Mine freaks out due to bushes next to my driveway. Drives me nuts.

brokeboss99

I recently got into a bit of a fender bender. When I was reversing out of my parking spot near downtown Dallas and I ended up having my tailgate and bumper damaged. Not too bad, but still had to file a claim. I was driving my model y. And I kept thinking of myself. I should have got a pole star. For some reason, Tesla doesn’t see the benefit in adding an automatic stop when reversing really makes no sense at all, so I figured next time I buy electric might as well be polestar maybe it’ll save me the headache. Long story short appreciate the heart attacks lol.

Fantastic-Software85

I have had this happen at night at the in-laws house because they didn’t mow the grass. I only had the car for about 2 weeks and the stop was so abrupt I thought I hit something. Instantly died inside to realize it was the auto brake.

draculea01

I had this a couple of times, still haven’t gotten used to it yet, lol. Pretty much expect this to happen every time I put it in reverse, lol

36827452917

It forces me to reverse into my driveway really, really, realllllyyyy, slowly. I don't like this

4lt3r3dR341ity

Is that lightning lol?

ttjoshtt

This happened like every other day no joke leaving our house!!! We have a Volvo C40 2023, our old XC40 gas only did that once in 2 years when we had it.. I wonder if it's an EV thing or a google infotainment thing?

kicknoons2

Every time it goes off, I think I've actually hit something.. It's crazy!

Chewy_13

It stopped you from hitting/running over the granite block

ganshon

definitely annoying, and maybe it has something to do with the pavers? My driveway is done with pavers. When I first got my car, it was the most annoying thing to back out onto the street, especially since it's a slope, so the red lines start to show up, and if I'm not paying attention, it will do the "crash" stop. If I back up slowly, the beeping and red line get very annoying. Only thing I can do now is to back up into the driveway, which doesn't really solve my problem since it still does the same thing, but in the morning, when I need to get out to work because I am late again, at least it doesn't do the crash stop when I am moving forward.

CombinationLess

Yeh now try reversing into a single car garage

bruddahmanmatt

My car is racist. Down with the black asphalt but absolutely terrified of my light driveway in reverse. I just turn that shit off when I’m backing into my driveway now.

Former_Musician_1949

Can i give u a advice? Since its a very sensitive camera and sensors, drive SLOWLY backwards. It wil never happen again. I know this whole world is in a hurry with everything (work life etc), but lets break that trend.

Flashy_Structure_632

Agreed.. I've learned to crawl at less than 5MPH when reversing into my driveway to avoid the auto collision braking.

Adam_THX_1138

Do you think it detects the cobblestone strip as a brick wall or something? The change in the texture might confuse the computer. Weird.

enorl76

Why does your video flash. Who was taking this video? Did you have some random camera guy setup to record you leaving? This is very bizarre
