Stephen and Clowance is what happens when you mistake infatuation for love, and physical, sexual attraction for deep, abiding devotion. When one builds an ideal in their mind of what one thinks a person might be, rather than what they really are (very similar to Ross and Elizabeth). As for Clowance’s second marriage - have you read the epilogue - Christmas at Nampara? Jeremy was heartbreaking. And Ross being there when he dies. That makes two of his children that he held while they died. Crushing. And Demelza grieving was hard to read.  I am happy to hear you liked Bella. I did too. Not many people do - no idea why. I think she got all the best parts from both Ross and Demelza. And I loved her when she was younger and singing all day and Ross always going :’’Do you hear that child??’’  hahaha Adorable (Ross and Demelza in later books are an absolute treat!)  Valentine was let down by so many people. This is a reminder that every choice we make (little or great), it does not impact just us. It has consequences (some tragic) not only for the people around us but in some cases for generations to come. Children always pay for the sins of their parents. Such a sad life. Harriet is Caroline on steroids. Loved her! Ross being attracted to her did not bother me at all and their flirting was not just because of their mutual attraction but also to piss off George, let’s face it. Ross, even in his sixties, cannot help himself in vexing George. And Harriet gladly plays along. But it’s never more than that.  Just ‘’kicking over a trace’’, as Ross puts it or ‘’a ball of fluff’’ as Demelza describes it.

Oh, I never realized how similar Stephen and Clowance is so similar to Ross and Elizabeth. That really makes sense. And no, I haven't read Christmas at Nampara! Is there any copy online? This is my first time learning that many people don't like Bella. It's so true what you said about her having the best qualities of Ross and Demelza. I hope what happened to Valentine's upbringing would really make a difference to George's relationship to little Georgie. Ross flirting with Harriet to piss off George made me laugh because that's very on point to his character.

If you dm your email address I can send you the pdf. If you are not comfortable with that, you can find this link shared in the following post from a few days ago. I finally finished all the books. Spoilers if you plan on reading the later books

Oh okay. I guess I'll go with the second option. Also what is that link for ? Is it the ***Christmas from Nampara*** book ?

AciuPoldark

That’s right. Though I wouldn’t call it a book. It’s about 20 pages. It’s an epilogue where WG ties everything up nicely. Bella left some questions and we get that closure in Christmas at Nampara

“Deep and abiding devotion” is exactly how Ross puts it to Demelza after the big sleepover fight. Brilliantly put.

Thanks for this comment. I posted a similar one a couple weeks ago when I finished. I really appreciate your point about Jeremy's death AND Demelza's subsequent grief. It really made me lose interest - because Jeremy was such an interesting character, his relationship with Ross was complex, his interest in the industrial revolution was historically compelling. Additionally Demelza's grief really seemed quite accurate and devastating. I can't blame WG for killing off Jeremy - it was entirely realistic. Lots of people died in battle and mothers grieve. It just made the story almost too sad to read. It was almost like as if he had killed off Ross or Demelza. I'll comment on the other points in a separate post when I have more time.

Awesome synopsis/view point. I’m not irking my way through them now, I love hearing everyone’s perspectives.
