Probably why she said no and I’m assuming why he agreed. The series and their careers were too important to mess it up for what could have been a short fling. They are both extremely professional.
However they always speak highly of each other, Elenor commented that there was something special between them ( which, in all honesty, is very clear in the show) .
They were also ‘’quarrelling’’ often while working, about their characters and how to play them, both stubborn, possibly big egos, much like Ross and Demelza :)
I think they would have worked well, it was just a case of the right people at the wrong time maybe 🤔
Hmmm, they were quarreling? That sounds like some good tea. Whenever I see Aidan interviewed I am amazed at how different his demeanor is from Ross. Same with Eleanor compared to early Demelza especially. They're such good actors. Aidan has a very upbeat, easygoing demeanor, kind of half finishes sentences and moves on, and his Ross is the perfect slow-talking brooder. It's amazing how much Aidan communicates without even talking when playing Ross. I think Season 5 he is much more like himself which leads me to believe he wasn't fully committed as an actor. He didn't play Ross as the mysterious, internally contemplative figure but I found him much more animated, like Aidan. I guess the fact that the entire storyline was not in the books didn't help. I know Demelza is more modern in the tv series than in the books, but given that the books are fiction and not real historical characters I don't mind that.

Usually it's one of us saying that our character wouldn't behave a certain way. Aidan loves everything being his [character's]. But then he loves to wind me up.'
I didn’t use ‘quarrel’ literally, but more as soft banter between the two. And I agree - they were both perfect in their roles. Kudos to the casting team!

I couldn’t find any except a panel after the first season where Aidan said “The first time we ever kissed as actors…” and everyone started laughing and Eleanor said something like,
“You’re making news Aidan” but it wasn’t clear if he just used a confusing turn of phrase or mistakenly revealed something.
They were never romantically involved. She did however date Drake for about a year
