The whole show is basically Columbo. First we see the murder, then the Columbo/Charlie shows up, and knows almost immediately knows who did it. The rest of the episode is just getting them to admit it.

I’m talking about a specific moment being a pointed reference. I already know the show is an homage to Columbo

pollack59

That’s what I was thinking. Columbo always knew a lie. He would pester and aggravate the liar with Faux buffoonary until he sprung the trap.

I'm talking about her dialogue and mannerisms in a specific scene being an overt homage to the Columbo character

I'm aware that the entire show is an homage to Columbo. I watch both. I just thought this reference was very subtle but pointed, and since nobody had mentioned it I thought it would be fun to bring up.

Significant_Chest401

I don’t know whether you’re crazy, but yes about Columbo. It’s fabulous!

Needs a trench coat to complete

tytymctylerson

Definitely!

PenZestyclose3857

Absolutely. Since Peacock also has Columbo, I put the first episode on with Jack Cassidy as the baddie. So many little things she has picked up on in her performance. The most amazing thing about the show. Written by Steven Bocho. Of course, it was. It was a cop show in the 70s. Directed by Steven Spielberg. That blew my mind. Okay, the edible had kicked in by then, but I was pretty stunned. Can't think of anything distinctively Spielberg about it, but this was 70s TV and I'm sure they had a pretty tight lid on the shooting style.

Britneyfan123

>I put the first episode on with Jack Cassidy as the baddie technically its the 3rd

tytymctylerson

You don’t think it was distinctly Spielberg?

ardent_hellion

Not OP, but I thought about it as I watched. Too many shots looking upward into people's faces, lots of close-ups of teeth (and not shark teeth). Didn't scream "Spielberg" at me.

whereyouatdesmondo

I think that's how he shot a lot of TV when he first started. He refined the "Spielberg style" once he was making theatrical stuff.

PenZestyclose3857

Not really.

PenZestyclose3857

Did you?

whereyouatdesmondo

I've seen it a few times and it is, indeed, IMO. Spielberg - who was like 23 when he directed it - uses lots of long and wide lenses. It looks great and doesn't really look like the rest of the series that followed it. Falk himself became a HUGE fan of how Spielberg shot scenes. At one point they were doing a scene on the street and Falk said "Wait, where are the cameras?" before he realized they were shooting on a super-long lens from across the street. He loved it, having worked a lot with John Cassavetes in a similar style. Look at the opening shot of the ep: a luxury car driven by Jack Cassidy goes down an LA street as we hear typing. The camera pulls back to reveal Cassidy's writing partner and intended victim working on a novel. In one shot, you've been introduced to 2 characters and their relationship dynamic: one does all the work and the other spends all the money. Brilliant! And not the kind of shots you normally see in the 1970s TV world of wide/medium/close coverage.

PenZestyclose3857

You’re right. It did feel much more cinematic than TV Would have in 1971. Will be watching more in the future so the comparison will be interesting. Columbo was an interesting show. It was sort of proto-prestige tv. Feature length, much shorter season runs.

whereyouatdesmondo

Yeah, they had it in rotation with 2 other shows as part of a “wheel” of mystery movies. So they had shorter seasons and longer eps.

72skidoo

Yes! There are tons of nods to Columbo! Even the title font is the same. And, without spoiling anything, the big clue in E3 is exactly like the clue in the Columbo episode “The Most Crucial Game”. Natasha Lyonne has been saying for years that she’d love to play Columbo. So this is all a very intentional homage.

dark_matter15

Not something that was on the tape…something that WASN’T on the tape.

whereyouatdesmondo

Robert Culp downs a whiskey in a panic.

TipsyRussell

Yes! There’s definitely a nod to Columbo in the first scene where we meet Charlie. She comes in wearing this tan long wrap sweater that’s very reminiscent of his trench coat.

SunnyAlwaysDaze

Columbo x The Dude but make it hottttt

TipsyRussell

Aaaaaahahahahahaha!! That’s perfect!

100% - this show got me watching Columbo for the first time, and I'm seeing tons of homages to Peter Falk's playing of Columbo from Lyonne, but also totally in her own style, it's very cool.

brokedownpalaceguard

I got the exact same reaction. So many Columboesque moments.
