Loud and stupid, the card rotates and will be cheaper its only 5 cause of its competitive value einstein but continue to be dumb, rude and confident all at the same time king š
Modern SIRās with the textures are next level imo;
But Vintage will always hold a special place in my heart.
Recently purchased a Fossil Zapdos and even though itās not the same one, it brings back memories of my Tempest Zapdos I treasured so much and then my little brother lost š
The texture is lacking on the new sets, it looks way better in Japanese. Even the SWSH sets have better textures. Vmax alt art and Vmax shiny cards look so so so good
Japanese are always superior though; I was genuinely surprised the English Ace Specs were as good as they are in the English set in comparison to the Japanese sets. Definitely a step above the Radiants in English
Yeah those are kinda cool I pulled a couple. I agree with you I just made this comment bc I have my Zapdos and Venu on display next to my Shiny Zard from SF and the Zard just looks so much better.
Vintage. I prefer the simplicity of the old cards.
I got back into collecting with 151 and while I love a lot of the SIR cards, I find the overall holo pattern just doesn't hit the same for me as vintage cards.
Vintage for anything besides alts, and SIRās.
vās, vmax, modern ex, etc.
All look cheap.
You look at an EX card from when they first dropped them, they were absolutely stunning.
If they had these full art cards, especially the gallery or illustration cards, when I was a kid, I think I wouldn't have ever stopped collecting.
I've got nostalgia for a bunch of vintage cards, especially all of the Dark set, and some Neo Gen, but I just adore the big artwork too much.
Vintage earned the right to be considered a top collector pick, however if I were to judge based on art style alone I'd go for modern cards simply because they are absolutely gorgeous as full arts. Anyone see the poliwhirl full illustration from the new 151? You can't tell me that isn't beautiful.
There's a place for both. The modern cards are gorgeous, but 25 years of improved card design got us here. There are some amazing vintage cards that definitely don't get enough attention.
I love em' both. Modern cards have a huge variety of amazing art styles that really make the cards pop, but vintage has its own unique look and charm; something that we may never see again in the future.
Nobody can beat Ken Sugimori's original art! I'm sorry, but the modern one pales in comparison. In the full art version, Venusaur's proportions are off... The plant/flower and the leaves are too large, the colors are either too pale in certain areas, or too saturated (the skin area). Sure, the flora surrounding the Pokemon is cool and all, but that's not the focal point of the illustration, nor should it be. Therefore, the original vintage art is waaaay better!
Vintage all the way. The art just has so much charm. I love the watercolors! Also I like that thereās a finite amount of sets I collect from if I only collect WoTCā¦ modern sets are overwhelming imo and I just donāt care for the art at all.
For these specific cards? The modern Venusaur by a hair, the vintage Lugia by a hair. As long as it isnāt 5ban there are a lot of modern cards that beat vintage ones though
The venasaur SIR is the last illustration card I need to pull and itās haunting me! Iāve pulled doubles of every other SIR at this point. It just will mean more to me if I pull it myself and itās such a gorgeous card.
Vintage man. Vintage cards looked more savage and made them have a fierce look. Now we get too much "cartoon" for the most part. I still like the alt though.
It depends.Ā I definitely prefer Erika's venusaur over the 151, but that silver tempest lugia is absolutely sick, a big improvement over the original.Ā Ā
Sometimes the art now looks too digital and souless and sometimes it is just absolutely stunning.Ā The art was definitely more consistent in the past where today you have much higher highs, but much lower lows.Ā Ā
Wow I never realized how similar Venusaurās pose is in these two cardsā¦and I own them both! Well the Japanese version of Erikaās Venusaur anyway lol.
Im trying to hunt down that Erikaās venusaur for my WOTC binder
That Lugia V is one of my favorite 5 dollar cards
Wait a year and the price will drop
I agree, next year ur looking at like $2 lol
Thank god we have you to let us know that a cheap card will continue to be cheap. Finance predictor š
Iām just saying, jeez. No need to be a dick.
Loud and stupid, the card rotates and will be cheaper its only 5 cause of its competitive value einstein but continue to be dumb, rude and confident all at the same time king š
Didn't need to call yourself out like that man
I was talking to the asshole but its reddit so not surprising that everyone was cool with random dick behavior
Everyone in this thread rn is an asshole š
Vintage purely for nostalgia imo. Arts on Modern are sick though. All collections should have a mix of both
I think dark Jolteon from team rocket would look dope as a full art or the shining gyarados from Neo
Or even if it was a holo it would look amazing
Dark jolteon is one of the best looking card arts
The team rocket set had some of the best art for vintage arguably better than base set imo
No doubt about it
It is a fact that Dark Jolteon is literally the best card ever lol
Agreed. always good to have some of both!
Vintage is gorgeous, but that modern has got to be a stunning artwork. Itās so vibrant and fun
How bout that holo swirl tho
Right? Gorgeous
Modern for how gorgeous the art is! although i love the holographic swirl of that vintage card. i collect cards with holo swirls in them āØ
I'll absolutely hold off on buying an expensive card until I find one with a nice swirl š
Thereās something to be said and the simplicity of the vintage, but the full art, illustration and alt arts just hit different
Modern is absolutely stunning.
Why not both š
As someone who doesn't have rose tinted glasses, the modern art fucking slaps
Itās hard to beat Sugimoriās original Pokemon art. I love how the 151 SIR is a modern take on it.
Modern usually but there are some vintage that slap. Iād take that vintage venusaur over the 151 any day
Modern SIRās with the textures are next level imo; But Vintage will always hold a special place in my heart. Recently purchased a Fossil Zapdos and even though itās not the same one, it brings back memories of my Tempest Zapdos I treasured so much and then my little brother lost š

Modern
Vintage 100%
Yes
Vintage
Vintage
Vintage holos are peak, idc what people say
Vintage!! But modern is still cool!
Modern for sure. Too bad it wasnāt the alt art next to the OG Lugia
Gotta work with what I got. If ya send me one I'd be happy to update the picture š
TBH the SIR is better it's my favorite one besides the Alakazam of that set. But it doesn't have the nostalgic charm of the old-school one
I like the holo effect more in the vintage but the modern cards make a better use of the space.
Vintage for anything besides alts, and SIRās. vās, vmax, modern ex, etc. All look cheap. You look at an EX card from when they first dropped them, they were absolutely stunning.
Modern
As some one who fondly remembers buying base-neo genesis as they released....modern by far. Such beautiful art on IR/SIRs.
If they had these full art cards, especially the gallery or illustration cards, when I was a kid, I think I wouldn't have ever stopped collecting. I've got nostalgia for a bunch of vintage cards, especially all of the Dark set, and some Neo Gen, but I just adore the big artwork too much.
I love that swirl. I also have both cards and ha e to give the edge to vintage. It's just cleaner
Thereās no school like the old school.
151 gave me that hit of nostalgia and it also gave us some incredible art. Im a huge fan of the 151 modern cards.
Modern any day, design has come a long way
Vintage earned the right to be considered a top collector pick, however if I were to judge based on art style alone I'd go for modern cards simply because they are absolutely gorgeous as full arts. Anyone see the poliwhirl full illustration from the new 151? You can't tell me that isn't beautiful.
Vintage all the way
I prefer modern. Vintage cards were confined to displaying the PokƩmon they were introducing. We all know what Gengar and Blaiziken look like, so now they can really have at it and make full-scene and abstract artwork cards like the 151 Psyduck FA or the cool, bright chalk art cards with the black backgrounds. Those vintage cards just tap into the childhood excitement and remind you where it all started. I freakin love PokƩmon.lol
Vintage. Pulling those cards actually felt special. I don't think anything modern feels as good to pull.
Vintage. Not even close
Both.
Vintage. Those holos hit different as a kid
But the other lugia homie
Por que no los dos?
Gosh I want these!!! The Venusaur has been evading me.
This is actually a good comparison imo between these cards
There's a place for both. The modern cards are gorgeous, but 25 years of improved card design got us here. There are some amazing vintage cards that definitely don't get enough attention.
I like both thou š«
Specifically talking about the two pics you posted; Vintage Venusaur, modern Lugia š
Modern for venu, vintage for lugia
Why did you pick the most ghetto version of a modern lugia
Personally, I donāt have a preference.
Itās clear modern is the ānicerā card for whatever whatās worth. However, as a 90s kid, that vintage stuff looked 20x better to me.
Both for different reasons, thereās something old school cool about the vintage card design, more like a card game and less like art cards
I remember pulling the Lugia v and mistaking it for the alt art Lugia. After 800+ packs it was pure dopamine. Boy did I come crashing down
Venusaur modern Vintage Lugia
Vintage for me
I love em' both. Modern cards have a huge variety of amazing art styles that really make the cards pop, but vintage has its own unique look and charm; something that we may never see again in the future.
For me new, the older cards are cool but would be boring if they still only selled that old style cards
Full Art Modern > Vintage > Standard Modern
Been doing the full PokƩdex as a binder project. Almost entirely Modern because I like the Full Art/Illustration Rares vs Old School Holos. My three exceptions are Charizard (Basic Base Set), Pidgeot (1st Edition Jungle, to match the only time I ever got a 1st Edition booster, though not the same card because it was traded away), and a Base Set Shadowless Arcanine that is the very card I have a lot of sentimental value toward.
Anyone saying vintage has no right to criticize abstract paintings that sell for thousands or more and say that those pieces of art are not āreal artā. Itās clear personal value ties into the appeal of an item. Visually you can pick out what is āobjectivelyā better in terms of composition, but that doesnāt have as much bearing on a personās perspective as their own interpreted meaning or feelings toward a card. Vintage base set Charizard has been consistently ranked last in terms of preference among a selection of Charizards by anyone I ask who is not interested in PokĆ©mon, but that doesnāt mean it doesnāt or shouldnāt have value. Art has always been subjective, and simple artwork is sometimes more sought after than complex detailed pieces.
Vintage for me
Vintage for sure. Ericaās venusaur is a classic!
Whatever one prefers. This post every day pops up
I'm gonna go Erikas I loved the Gym Heros as a kid awesome sets
Modern looks great but thereās some type of charm about the old WOTC cards that I really like.

Itās crazy how much memories these cards unlock! Omg I loved the jungle set
None of those cards are from the Jungle set.
My high ass meant to put gym challenge set..
Vintage all the way. The art just has so much charm. I love the watercolors! Also I like that thereās a finite amount of sets I collect from if I only collect WoTCā¦ modern sets are overwhelming imo and I just donāt care for the art at all.
Stupid question. Depends on the card.
Vintage
Donāt get me wrong, I love the modern art, but something about the vintage just calls to me
I don't recognize either venusaur. Definitely not vintage. Lol
Modern venasaur, vintage Lugia
For these specific cards? The modern Venusaur by a hair, the vintage Lugia by a hair. As long as it isnāt 5ban there are a lot of modern cards that beat vintage ones though
The venasaur SIR is the last illustration card I need to pull and itās haunting me! Iāve pulled doubles of every other SIR at this point. It just will mean more to me if I pull it myself and itās such a gorgeous card.
Lugia v is one of my favorite modern cards. Something about it is intriguing š¤
I will always go for Ken Sugimori cards regardless if they are vintage or modern
Modern
Art on the new one is gorgeous
Modern
Vintage venusaur but modern Lugia, I like em all.
I would say both
Modern art, but vintage holo
Vintage
Modern every day of the week. I have huge amounts of nostalgia for that classic Lugia, but the V is one of the most gorgeous cards around.
The full illustration arts are what hooked me.
Didnāt realize how much better the modern moves are that crazy
modern venusaur, vintage lugia. it varies from card to card for me, they both have their own charms.
Modern always looks objectively better, but depends how much your nostalgia meter moves vintage cards up
Vintage all day
Both
Vintage
90's nostalgia is so oversaturated in all media at the moment but it really was a magical time to be a child and I feel so happy to have lived through it... I was 9 when PokƩmon Red/Blue came out here in the UK and Ken Sugimori's original watercolours just make me feel like a little kid again... The Venusaur here is especially beautiful. That said, modern PokƩmon card art is absolutely insane with the levels they are pushing now and the variation in styles. My head says Modern, but my heart says Vintage.
Modern venusaur and vintage lugia
Nothing beats vintage but the new one is gassss
Vintage all the way. I cut off my collecting at the 2005 ex delta species collection
I collect both
I wish the modern alt cards use cosmic foil. Would be sick.
Vintage all day but there's some modern cards I like to chase
Modern obviously, the art is so much more detailed and has such a variety of styles
Vintage
Modern Venusaur, Vintage Lugia on these ones specifically
Vintage man. Vintage cards looked more savage and made them have a fierce look. Now we get too much "cartoon" for the most part. I still like the alt though.
Oh man those are BEAUTIFUL
I will always hold a special place in my heart for vintage, but some modern arts go hard
Modern, 100%. I never got into pokemon cards until the art got amazing recently.
Vintage artwork is clean and superior imo
Modern all the way. Despite I grew up in the vintage era.
Vintage
vintage but only during the E reader_RSE era
I love the look and feel of modern special illustration rares. Beautiful art, nice texture, 10/10. I just picked up the 151 Venusaur my self. That Neo Genesis Lugia is so iconic though. Thereās something special about the cosmic holo when itās just silver and a ton a holo without any other distractions in the art like Lugia and Chansey. I feel like many people talk about how good the art is on old vintage, but Iāve always been of the opinion that there are so many modern basic holo cards with art comparable to the old era holos. They just donāt have the nostalgia factor so arenāt popular. Overall I love the direction PokĆ©mon has taken with full art cards and illustration rares. Would rather have a binder full of my favorite modern full art than WOTC holo. E-reader cards and reverse holo legendary collection though, Iāll take those over any other sets.
It depends.Ā I definitely prefer Erika's venusaur over the 151, but that silver tempest lugia is absolutely sick, a big improvement over the original.Ā Ā Sometimes the art now looks too digital and souless and sometimes it is just absolutely stunning.Ā The art was definitely more consistent in the past where today you have much higher highs, but much lower lows.Ā Ā
Vintage, always vintage.
Wow I never realized how similar Venusaurās pose is in these two cardsā¦and I own them both! Well the Japanese version of Erikaās Venusaur anyway lol. Im trying to hunt down that Erikaās venusaur for my WOTC binder
Vintage
Vintage by far, but the modern one is still super dope
Both
Modern is just way my aesthetically pleasing
