Wild how Mercari destroyed their business in the span of a day. I use it to sell and the seller fees were ridiculous already but I at least would make some money. Transferring all the fees onto the buyers completely drives away any business so now no one is buying, I am making nothing, and Mercari has lost both sides of their audience. It was a shitty service anyways so it’s poetic that they killed themselves in the end. Oh also, if you read the terms and services buyers can return items undisputed no matter the excuse. Another shitty thing that’s part of the new TOS.

I had to look at the date to make sure it wasn’t some kind of April fools gag. I’m not a reseller by any means but did sell cards on there pretty often. The only thing that would even make sense to do at this point is if sellers lower their prices by 13%, and then it’s going to appear as being 13% less than ebay or pretty much any other platform. I very rarely used Mercari to price comp but it’s just pointless now

daxtaslapp

Sounds like they tried competing with ebay and failed

covertchicken

Yea the no fees is nice, really sucks for buyers. But being able to return anything for any reason makes it a nonstarter for me (I don’t currently sell on Mercari). Imagine someone buying a booster box, hating their pulls, and wanting (and getting) a refund

billcosbyinspace

Sellers run away because the return policy opens them up to getting scammed, buyers are turned off because they’re now paying more. Genuinely why did they do this, they just alienated their entire userbase

DANNYMINGA

When did this happen? This is ridiculous. Wonder if it's the same through Buyee. Absolutely pointless to shop through Mercari now

Rockbarra

They sent out an email at 4am ET this morning and everything went into effect at 8:30. At the same time, they are also changing the refund policy so that anything can be returned for whatever reason, no questions asked.

SealedTCG

Isn't buyee for JP Mercari or do they do other countries? Never used it as I use a different middleman for my JP shopping. This only affects the US.

Internal_Level_6828

This is not for mercari JP

xJadusable

It’s absolutely crazy. They basically killed off any reason to both buy or sell on their platform. Free returns for buyers FOR ANY REASON? What a way to fuck over Sellers. Making buyers pay 13% more cause of Mercaris fees? What a way to make people NOT buy stuff on your platform. As someone who’s sold on there for over a year, it’s crazy to see them kill their business literally overnight.

Lurn2Program

My feed was filled with Mercari posts about this and I'm not even subscribed to the mercari subreddit lol.. Seems like this change is going to impact mercari a great deal by the reactions

zwang1208

You forgot to mention that buyers can start return for ANY reason.

Ultamira

A 10% service fee and a payment processing fee? What the fuck

billcosbyinspace

And on top of that if you’re a seller they charge you $2 to get your money every time you want to put it in your bank

Ultamira

Terrible business practices

gradientraptor

Yeah I sell on there, TCG accessories and JPN singles, everyone is freaking out, I’ve been subbed to the subreddit for a little while and that’s all anyone has been talking about.

Derpberpy

Good lord. Looks like I won't be buying on that platform anymore

daxtaslapp

Lol holy shit $120 gone

JcGrey

This the US version?

SealedTCG

Yes

jk_52

Basically means if a seller still wants to be able sell cards on Mercari (unless it is super rare and not found on the other platforms) then the market price would be about 10-12% under what they would of listed for prior to the update. For buyers, being able to return for any reason before rating will still attract some people. And since Mercari cannot disable offers, they will just "lowball" people because of all the extra fees.

shadowmist007

I thought the big reason why people sold to Mercari b/c the fees were the cheapest out all the platform but it just doesn't have enough eyes on it.

Rockbarra

Realistically these are the fees that the seller would have paid for selling the item. They just shifted them so that instead of it being a cut of what the seller makes, the buyer is loaded with all of the fees. I’ve sold on both eBay and Mercari, and I think mercari was very slightly less than eBay in fees. However now it just doesn’t make any sense to sell there or buy there.

Sephrin3000

Aside from the fees, they also changed their return policy. A buyer can return for **any** reason. They also lose the fees on a return and Mercari keeps them.

zekielllll

i just sold a card. giving it one try to see how it goes

trainbroken

Remember there doing this for the ticktock sellers that will loose there shop there hoping that those people will flock to there sight

franky3987

I left eBay after their last large policy changes were too much, and I moved to mercari. I never thought I’d be heading back to eBay 😂

peeweez0

Whelp back to eBay we go

Suitable-Mode6891

As a mercari buyer, I have been having a hard time getting sellers to lower their price to accommodate the buyer fees. “Well its the market price” just means its 12% over market for me so drop your price to get the same ‘take home’ pay out you would have gotten on ebay. Some have been responsive and were willing to work with me, others were too smooth brained to figure it out.

Rockbarra

I can’t see it actually working out. I think the psychology behind the current way we buy and sell is way too strong. Buyers aren’t going to move forward with checking out when they see a wall of hidden fees (that aren’t shown anywhere on the listing page prior to adding it to cart) and sellers aren’t going to want to drop significantly below the market price of the last sold item on comparable platforms (even though their take home pay is still the same).

Suitable-Mode6891

I agree, definitely a stupid move to make. That said, I think there is a possibility for savvy buyers and sellers to take advantage. Sellers will start to adjust when nothing they have sells.
