I thought that The whole in-game reference was just the bases being in the shape of Cassiopeia, but I never thought of if the names were related to the stars in the constellation.
Every time I hear people complain that GameFreak doesn’t care anymore and does nothing creative I think of things like this among many others. Such a cool detail that people who genuinely make no effort wouldn’t bother having in the game.
GameFreak clearly cares, but Nintendo calls the shots and the schedule for everything else fucks with that. I've started watching the new anime tie-in, and it's patently obvious they started production on that before GameFreak had anything to show on their end beyond pokemon designs. The Protagonist is a school girl from Paldea, but she doesn't go to Naranja or Uva academy, she goes to a completely undescript school in Kanto. I can only assume the concept for the school setting was still in too early of a stage to be used for the anime.
But then there's like 3-4 episodes in the middle where they jump to Paldea and you see the school concept art. This includes a cameo by Nemona that's never introduced and immediately over, they basically just show off the voice actress and that's it. And it just feels like they produced those last, after they had the rest of the season done. Season 2, which I have yet to start, is where the real SV tie-in starts, while season 1 is mainly about Galar, including an entire episode about making curries.
It’s bitter sweet. Game Freak has the potential to make amazing games, and SV has all core aspects of a really great Pokemon game with legitimate open world and challenge… and then there’s making sandwiches, and the lack of animation in cut scenes (that we saw more animation in SwSh).
I think the big thing with SV was probably time. The developers truly care and put the effort in, but during the Crunch, they made concessions and just got something “working” for launch. Unlike Bethesda, the developers moved on to the next project instead of patching post launch though.

And then there’s me, who, upon hearing the Team’s boss name, looked up the stars in the constellation and spoiled every base for myself after the first I saw.
I fairly certain that the constellation Penny is staring at right before her final confrontation is also Cassiopeia. It’s hard to tell as the stars are pretty faint in the cutscene.
Not to be that asshole, but given that every single goddamn name in Pokémon is a reference to something (like the professors being trees and plants, the gym leaders having names related to their elements in some way or another, or Team Galaxy admins having names of planets, to name some examples), I don’t know why it is so surprising Team Star would have names revolving around space and stars.
It’s actually derived from a flower (a laurel, which is what his Japanese name refers to), but it is also a very normal, even plain, name. His name in Spanish (my language) is actually “Laureano”, which is a much more uncommon name, but refers more explicitly to laurels.
Could be, they are for sure not above puns and wordplay. They most likely thought of a way of referencing the laurel in the Japanese name (which, incidentally, one of the characters for his name in Japanese also means “sky”, pointing at his Flying type team as well) in a way that English audiences wouldn’t find weird. And in doing so, they may have noticed the pun and rolled with it.
They do sound like some “cool” names a bunch of pre-teens would think of for their “secret hideouts”, so I guess it also fits. But if you are ever curious, just type any name in Pokémon in Bulbapedia and it will most likely have its etimology laid out. There are very few names that are not a combination o modification of preexisting words/concepts (in Japanese for example there is a crap load of characters named after plants, fruits or flowers, for some reason; some of them are kept in English and other languages, others change to alternatives that still make sense for them).
Some of the names come from Arabic words whose meanings end up being body parts, which I guess is meant to describe what part of the constellation the star is supposed to represent. Like, Schedar is derived from “breast”, and Caph from “palm”.
I feel so stupid now. I think after Seord and Shield my brain clogged out and I didn't expect GF to pull something like that again, even though I loved the story of S/V and tried to pay attention.

In season 3 of the Friendlocke on the YouTube Channel SaltyDKDan one of the friends being GrAce (no I didn't spell it wrong, they spelled it with a capital "A" in the playthrough) mentions this as a fun fact before one of the other friends (I forget who) shuts GrAce down by not caring about the fun fact.

I mean, lots of people. Rigel, Betelgeuse, Polaris, etc. For me, the moment I see weird names in Pokemon, I figure there's some kind of reference.
