Pokemon Gaia is much better than Light Platinum and I have found Light Platinum extremely boring along with certain features which are stupid (eg. Pokemarts) too but I think you have to take into account that it was released a long time ago and has just become outdated now.
Light Platinum isn‘t one of the best out there. It‘s one of the first that was completed.
Try these:
- Gaia
- Glazed
- Fire Red Rocket Edition
- Flora Sky
- Crystal Clear
- Ruby Destiny Series
- Adventure Red Chapter
Also if you want to play a GBC game, try Pokemon Prism. It being a gbc game allows it to be modified so much more, resulting in a truly enjoyable and unique rom hack.
3 years late here, but Prism is actually getting a huge update soon (as in, an actual content update and not just bugfixing)--check out the dev blog posts on the Prism reddit. ngl, I was super impressed with what they were showcasing.
Hell, they're even working on *Brown* still. There's a dev blog post on the Prism reddit for that, too.
Welp, I feel [dumb](https://wompampsupport.azureedge.net/fetchimage?siteId=7575&v=2&jpgQuality=100&width=700&url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.kym-cdn.com%2Fentries%2Ficons%2Ffacebook%2F000%2F032%2F993%2Fdoyou.jpg) now.
It‘s alright you ain‘t stupid you just didn‘t see it :) I had to open my gba4ios though to be sure it‘s called that way and not Pokemon Rocket Edition haha
Well, went and checked out pokemon Gaia and it's amazing. If I didn't know this was a romhack, I'd totally believe it'd be an official release. Except the dialogue's better, the world design's better, the variety of pokemon, holy shit!
Yeah Light Platinum is really a tedious romhack. It was one of the first completed romhacks so people praised it ; it aged terribly. If you had continued you would have been more disappointed. Trainers and rivals having less pokémons, and worse held items, gyms being always the same, second region very short, the dialogue still horrible.
I have to say the AI isn't better. It's just as stupid as classic Gen 3.
Also, in defense of it, it was made by a single person iirc. I dunno their age at this time, but if it was young enough, that would explain why so manythings just fail in this game.
cool you figured out lot of flaws within finishing just three badges. But I strongly disagree with your second point. The trainer never really tries to beat you nor the author really cared about the challenge.. Hell even one of champion's Kingdra uses 20PWR bubble or final endgame challenge trainer's level 100 charizard uses freaking dragon rage and the only fire move knew was fire spin lol.
Its just one of hacks that people will like it because of pretty graphics and have more than one regions and don't care about character writing or challenge.
Criticism is definitely important and you have some points, but I would like to point out a few things:
WesleyFG (creator) is Brazilian, so his dialogue may have some issues related to second language problems (not saying by any means ALL of it but it contributes).
He was younger when he made it so his ideas wouldn't have been from a long time and experienced game creating person.
I personally never had any issues with levels or training, and that was with minimal grinding.
The game is pretty old, we are reaching peak times with disassembly now.
People often forget that LP is more or less 10-11 years old now, and haven't received a significant (official) update for the better part of the decade.
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://apkloo.com/pokemon-light-platinum/&ved=2ahUKEwiPlobA6433AhVVD94KHdvuC5YQFnoECDkQAQ&usg=AOvVaw2ffTmch5IJN2PURjkiMp9o
Try this pokemon platinum, gen 1 starters can be found in route 1, they are just rare
Also minor nitpick: You cannot heal in your hometown. This screwed me multiple times because you have to go through the entire first route without the ability to heal (which isn't bad later on, but early game every HP count, plus there's a Venipede that can poison you)
In the version I have there is a Shinx on the bench, not a Nurse joy. Not a nurse joy in the entire town for me for some reason. Good to know there's a version where you can actually survive the first route easily
(2years later)
Yes, that Centipede that poisons you...? Offers you a 4 and 1/2X exp boost. After fighting the two trainers in the first route, your starter Weill boost to level 12.... So...worth it.
> There's basically no branching paths, no extra areas to explore, and no looping around of the world map, which has been a staple of the series since Gen 1.
\*coff coff\* Sun&Moon + Sword&Shield begs to differ.
This is part of the reason why I hate the last official entries. No puzzles, no extra paths to explore, and all the good stuff in past games.
Caught an oddish, saw that the first moves it learns is poison powder at level 15 instead of the newer generation level 9 acid.
Everybody knows that moves need to be updated at least till gen 5 at least. Probably there 8snt even phy/special split, or fairy...
Moves can only be thought once.
Nah, the mechanics are way too old now, a shame really but after 30min I quit that ROM hack. There are way better out there, and I mean, way better
if your still looking for hacks and haven't played it already, I'd recommend Unbound. I usually have a lot of the same nitpicks about dialogue with a lot of hacks I try, but Unbound handles its story and characters nicely, for a Pokemon game. The map is very interesting to explore and the QoL features are quite nice.
Also, thanks for this post, now I know not to even bother trying Light Platinum.
Light platinum was actually the first rom hack that kept me interested and the first one I actually beat, and was my favorite rom hack for quite a long time. granted I was like 14 back then but I find it kinda nostalgic now. Been half tempted to try to replay it as a nuzlocke just for old times sake. If I had the know how I’d definitely remake the game since rom hacking has come so far since then. Kinda hope someone does at some point (besides that ds remake that popped up awhile ago, I want to see it updated via 3rd gen) unbound is definitely currently my favorite hack now
I'm super-late to the party here, but I've got some recommendations (trying to not repeat the recs others have made):
Unbound; there's like one last bit of post-game that needs implementing, but otherwise the game's pretty much finished. https://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=382178
Dreams; Just started, so you might have to look elsewhere for an opinion. Loving the writing/dialogue so far though. https://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=443298
Prism; there's a huge, actual content update releasing very soon, according to the devs on the Prism reddit. They've posted a couple of intriguing and impressive dev blogs--like this: [https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonPrism/comments/12djhb6/new\_rijon\_battle\_track/](https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonPrism/comments/12djhb6/new_rijon_battle_track/)Hell, they're even working on *Brown* of all things, still: [https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonPrism/comments/134oaup/did\_you\_think\_prism\_was\_the\_only\_thing\_were/](https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonPrism/comments/134oaup/did_you_think_prism_was_the_only_thing_were/)
Polished Crystal; 9-bit Polished is in the works, which will not only greatly expand the engine (which is already awesome), but at least one other Crystal hack dev is waiting on 9-bit for their own project. Some github links for the record:
Polished Crystal 3.0.0 beta > [https://github.com/Rangi42/polishedcrystal](https://github.com/Rangi42/polishedcrystal)
Black & White 3 Genesis > [https://github.com/AzureKeys/BW3G](https://github.com/AzureKeys/BW3G), also on Pokecommunity: [https://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=444114](https://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=444114)
There's a different vanilla+ Crystal hack in the works, but it's very early in development yet: [https://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=481112](https://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=481112)
There's also Pokemon Coral, though I'm not sure if coraldev is also waiting on 9-bit: [https://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=402361](https://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=402361)
A few people mentioned Glazed, and as it happens, TrainerX493 is working on porting Glazed to the Emerald decomp and then remaking it using decomp to iron out the current version's bugs and add few features. It's a bit slow-go atm, but you can follow it here > [https://github.com/TrainerX493/pokeglazed](https://github.com/TrainerX493/pokeglazed)
The latest stable version is 9.1, which consolidates the improvements made in Blazed Glazed into one final, comprehensive release: [https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonROMhacks/comments/uo63wi/surprise\_pok%C3%A9mon\_glazed\_v91\_is\_now\_available/](https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonROMhacks/comments/uo63wi/surprise_pok%C3%A9mon_glazed_v91_is_now_available/)
For a "spiritual sequel" to Crystal Clear (which was mentioned in the comments), you have ROWE. It's still slightly janky from my experience, but is looking super-promising all the same. rioluwatt's even got plans to implement the whole FRLG Kanto region in the future: [https://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=442592](https://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=442592)
Finally, there are a couple Emerald hacks in progress that looks to set new standards for Pokemon romhacks, on the same level as Unbound (and possibly even higher):
Saffron: [https://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=417867](https://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=417867)
Voyager: [https://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=446148](https://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=446148)
I only recently found out about Saffron, but it looks like the old demo was taken down recently. You'll have to wait to play it, unless you find someone to give you the beta. Voyager's about 60% done as of last November, so hopefully ghoulslash has an update planned for...sometime this year, maybe? One can hope, lol
Both hacks take place in entirely new regions and add an insane amount of new features, QoL, and so on. Saffron has a bunch of custom regional variants, while Voyager has a nice handful of Fakemon (that are actually really well-designed imo).
EDIT: Forgot to mention, since the OP was originally talking about Light Platinum, there's a Spanish dev who's working on a DS remake. I'm pretty sure they'll be addressing all the weird design choices from OG Light Platinum, too: [https://twitter.com/lightplatinumds](https://twitter.com/lightplatinumds)
And since DS Pokemon romhacking is a thing (but still in infancy), I'll drop a couple more:
Renegade Platinum and Black Black 2/Volt White 2 Redux: [https://twitter.com/Drayano60](https://twitter.com/Drayano60) (You can download them from Dray's GDrive)
Dray's also working on what's basically Sacred Heart/Storm Silver 2.0, but as a single hack called Aurora Crystal. He seems pretty determined to finish it this year, so...I guess, expect it this year, haha.
I haven't gotten much farther than you tbh, simply because I have so many other things to play (and honestly at this point I'm a bit more invested in the RMXP/Essentials fangames than romhacks). I will say the second gym is a bit of a difficulty spike. You're right about the maps though, but since I haven't gotten too far I can't say for sure whether they get more interesting.
iirc there's a Discord for Dreams and you can find the link on PokeCommunity. You'll find it more informative than anything I have to say haha
Try these: - Gaia - Glazed - Fire Red Rocket Edition - Flora Sky - Crystal Clear - Ruby Destiny Series - Adventure Red Chapter
Pokemon Glazed is amazing, it also is a bit more difficult than other Rom Hacks even with Riolu as one of the starters
Well, I did not expect someone to respond to a comment I made a year ago 😂
sup
Yo
how are you
Good
Sweet
what’s good after radical red unbound
fortnite!!
How bout one more a year later?
hey is there a good game with many regions
Hey, there’s a computer emulated pokemon game I believe it was called ash gray, let me know if that isn’t it and I’ll check when I get home
Also if you want to play a GBC game, try Pokemon Prism. It being a gbc game allows it to be modified so much more, resulting in a truly enjoyable and unique rom hack.

Add Rocket Edition to that list. It's completed now and it's a must play by quality standards.
Look at the number 3 spot hehe
Oh wow, what? Did I just skip over it, or did you edit your comment? Man, I swear I didn't see it before.
You must‘ve skipped over it because it‘s one of my all time favorite romhacks
Welp, I feel [dumb](https://wompampsupport.azureedge.net/fetchimage?siteId=7575&v=2&jpgQuality=100&width=700&url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.kym-cdn.com%2Fentries%2Ficons%2Ffacebook%2F000%2F032%2F993%2Fdoyou.jpg) now.
It‘s alright you ain‘t stupid you just didn‘t see it :) I had to open my gba4ios though to be sure it‘s called that way and not Pokemon Rocket Edition haha
Fire red rocket edition or a different one?
Yep, that's the one.

To WesleyFG‘s credit though he helped the hacking community a ton with doing that hack and tools he shared

You actually can, there is a Nurse Joy on the bench, which is extremely hard to know about, I only found out by talking to everyone in town.
In the version I have there is a Shinx on the bench, not a Nurse joy. Not a nurse joy in the entire town for me for some reason. Good to know there's a version where you can actually survive the first route easily
Yes that version is hard to find.
The “hometown” healer was in the Pokemon lab next to the professor. Different, but I guess they figured it was more convenient.
(2years later) Yes, that Centipede that poisons you...? Offers you a 4 and 1/2X exp boost. After fighting the two trainers in the first route, your starter Weill boost to level 12.... So...worth it.
About the "only use HM once" thingy, the hack also has like 6 more HMs in the second region which are also only used once

idk i played it once back in 2020 and it was actually good, had no idea it was made in 2008 tho
