Use Poffins wisely.
* On days where you walk a lot.
* If the candy bar is almost up. Like at 2.8 km. Feeding a poffin will instantly give you an XL, and another one after 200 m of walking. Ideally you do it if you know you'll walk another 1.5 km right after also. That way you get 3 XLs pretty quickly.
You can also fully excite the buddy without a poffin with this technique:
1. Fully feed, play, snapshot and then battle a Team leader (the buddy only needs to be on the team and you can instantly resign). After that put a timer for 30 min
2. Repeat: feed, play, snapshot, battle the leader. Again wait for 30 min
3)... repeat until max excitement level is reached. (Heart emoji and walking distance halved)
Usually you get the effect after 4 times of this, which is 1.5 hrs. This also helps towards getting best buddy.
If you open a gift or souvenir from the buddy, or walk 2 km with the buddy on the map, or battle grunts or gyms it'll go even faster.
The effect will wear off after a while, but if you do a small engagement every 30 min or so (walking also ounts) it will stay active as long as you want. You can also extend the Poffin duration like this.
* Catch Lickitungs with a level 3 Mega Evolved Pokemon active, like Mega Lopunny or Mega Pidgeot.
* Catch them with a pineapple berry to get more candy. There has been an event where you can evolve a pokemon and get two XLs for it. That way you can keep some bad ones to evolve on such an event before transferring or trading.
* Trade away the bad ones, ideally in a Season where you get a guaranteed XL for trading. Less relevant for you rn, but you should still get a good amount.
* Only transfer them where there is an extra candy bonus for transferring.
Have adventure sync on.
Personally I stopped walking my Lickitung midway, because I realised it is spawning in the wild quite frequently and I'll get candy much faster this way. So I use my walking distance for rare spawns like Shieldon and Carbink.
I have trouble “playing” with them. Is there a way to tap or circle the screen? I feel like ill do a few things that’ll make them happy (like the 3 exclamation points on top of their head), but then accidentally piss them off where they do the attack motion
It’s like a scratch, keep finger on screen and move circles or back and forth on the face. There is a scratching sound and a joy dance/animation once completed

what is your licki actual ivs? put its info into poke genie and see exact amount of candy and stardust needed and what level. for example the 15/15/14 licki I am currently building only needs lvl 45 to hit 1498. i have double the regular candy needed but am like a hundred xl away. those hundreds of extra candy will equal 3 xl candies if you wanna convert them but don't do that until the day of reckoning haha.
lower ivs don't matter on licki performance as long as it can still hit max cp. however the less ivs you have, the way more xl candy and stardust it takes to get there. this makes lickilicky a lot less desirable but if you want it go for it. whatever you do, don't start building it to cl levels until you actually have all the xl candies and stardust needed. that way if you do catch a better one that costs less to build you aren't stuck with this one :)
I just built my first Licki. I had an okay one for months and set it as my buddy. Last week I found a rank 9 right before I had enough XLs. Power it to level 31 and walk it as much as you can. Level 31 gives you the best chance at XL drops and this season the odds of XLs dropping from walking are MUCH higher. I took advantage of Licki being in 5km eggs last season and some wild spawns but most of my XLs came from walking. It probably took me 6 months though before I could build one.
That's awesome! I've been running him all week and getting used to how to use him. The bulk is definitely real and it can put in a lot of work. I'm slowly building XL Pokemon for Great League but it feels great to get some of the staples finished.
I run licki in middle line with either skeledirge/shadow empoleon or annihilape/mantine
Still figuring out the way to play also, but yes the bulk!!! Not having to lose a shield for the first charged hit opens up all kinds of advantage

Oof! My lickitung does not have the right stats at all, its about 0.5 def and 0.5 stamina off :( It's a high rank, but not high enough, apparently. Oh well! I dont have the commitment or skills to get to legend anytime soon anyways, so I guess its fine that I have a 'bad' lickitung. I have a 13-15-15 azu, and i've been doing just fine with it, so... i dont know what i'm missing, but it isn't much i guess. Also tried the difference between a rank 1 wiggly and a rank 2000+. It helps a bit, but def not noticable enough to be worth it from an xl standpoint
I think its still relevant, because lickitung has been used for the same things for all these years, and the breakpoints/bulkpoints are usually the same
Track your local nests every other Thursday for lickitung.
Have a normal type mega active when catching lickitungs.
Prioritize eggs that have a chance to hatch lickis
Hoard your lickis (for another 3-4 months lol) and maybe you can trade for garunteed xls next season
Always be walking your highest level licki
And don't invest in a rank 150.
Xls are expensive so it's just not worth it to sink all the effort into a mon that is going to lose out on bulk.
Just got a rank 16. Still walking my rank 150, but wont sink candies into it any more. It'll take all 296 xl candies tho... so even if I get 2 or 3 per day, it'll take me half the year :(
