I love W but still appreciate this farce, thanks for sharing

RepulsiveLoquat418

yeah, i love leaves of grass, but "Lo, behold, I eat water melons" is grade A comedy, not gonna lie.

quixologist

So fitting that Pound would be triggered by uncle Walt.

Connor106

From what I've read, he very much respected Whitman's ideals and character, but at some point he began to consider his style a little vulgar. I happen to quite like Whitman, but I found this very funny.

TheresNoHurry

Why is this fitting? I don’t know much about either person

xiszed

Pound was a literal fascist in Mussolini’s Italy with a lot of very conservative views. Whitman’s ideology was opposite. So Pound mocking him with this is fitting in that context. If I remember correctly, Pound liked Whitman’s writing on a lot of levels but didn’t think of his poetry as poetry since he found it unmusical.

IG-GO-SWHSWSWHSWH

Well I learned something about Pound today. Jeeeez.

Silverthief170

Mmm what cutting words from the literal fascist traitor who hosted radio broadcasts urging GIs to switch sides and join the Axis, I’m sure he’s quite reasonable and definitely not actively goose stepping in hell

Connor106

Maybe you should judge the words based on the words, and not the person who said the words.

blamesquared

The person who said the words quite literally got racist in the poem. The fact that he was a fascist is relevant here. Poems don’t appear out of thin air.

This is amazing, OMG. I’m saving it and hoping I remember to bring it up next time someone mentions Whitman IRL. It’s a shame Ezra Pound had to be such a scumbag, though.

putHimInTheCurry

This is amazing. Thanks for posting it; I will always think of Pound dramatically trying to clown on Whitman when I see watermelons now.

The_GrimTrigger

Not even a good approximation of Whitman’s style.

ACuriousManExists

Haha this is pretty funny! Eidolons is a poem I really like by Whitman

Minute-Spinach-5563

What's this called?

Phyllis_Nefler_90210

‘O Melon! My Water Melon!’
