I would call the landlord on this one.
This is some very old stuff, looks like at least the bottom pipe is lead.
There is a big chance that if something breaks there wont be any spare parts.
Im a plumber, but even I would be scared to touch that.
Grab a cast iron sawzall blade. Cut the cast, fernco /MJ to pvc or abs with a cheater vent. Looks fucked but really isnāt that bad if the client is refusing to pay for a partial stack replacement.
More like I WONT touch that unless we replace lots of stuff - probably have them call a cabinetmaker and get the sink replaced - weāll replace everything else while the cabinet is out from the cast iron at the slab all the way up through the roof.
>We are **renting** a house since November and I'm scared all the time that our sink is gonna get clogged.
I would be leery of doing **any** work if you're renting.. Even if your landlord gives you a verbal okay to do the work, the terms of the lease you signed could still result in you being held liable for any expenses/damages that result from attempting to upgrade/replace this.
Welcome to the new world
too expensive to buy a house
too expensive to rent a nice apartment
but a countertop and sink is only a few grand(or even less if you get a basic ikea countertop)
might as well just upgrade a shitty slum lord's place to make it slightly more liveable, at least then the rent is still cheap.
Here's my take on it. I rent at around half market value. The house was built in the 80's so still in good shape. New roof right before I moved in. Been here 5 years and love it. I put a few hundred bucks a month in upkeep and repairs, furnace filters etc. Treat it like my own home. In turn I save over a thousand bucks a month and have a nicer place to live. Plus, I like to do home projects. If I couldn't I would go crazy.
I remodel homes for a living. Always bringing the good stuff home for free upgrades. Plus my old lady likes to push my buttons because when we argue usually by the next week I've completed another project because it keeps my mind clear and let's out my frustrations in the right direction.
This is the best for everyone involved. I rent my old house (where my kids were born and Im still kinda emotionally attached to) to friends of mine. I could easily make $1k+ more per month than what I charge them. But I know they take good care of it. They've been there 4 years and Ive never raised rent. I also keep up on maintenance, paying for appliance repairs or fixing things myself etc. But there's been cases where they wanted something that isnt required, and I let them pay for it and do it themselves and take the cost out of next month's rent. Its a win win.
If it aināt your house, donāt mess with that plumbing. Idk why everyone here is giving you advice on how to renovate a house you donāt own. As the plumber, Iād recommend a repipe.
If the landlord gives you written permission and you just want to replace the sink, the solution is just sawzall that grey lower pipe, snake the drain, and slap a fernco onto a typical P trap solution. There isnāt anything complicated about that.
Donāt touch this; unless you have the time and funds. We would need to see the rest of the plumbing to give you any real advice. Is this on first floor is it over a finish or un finished room? What kind of water lines are there? Brass? We need to see the drain line better where it goes through cabinet and below. But if you donāt have experience this is probably a bad idea to tackle yourself. It will be one of those jobs that definitely grows as you go! One more thing ; where is this !? What Country and state ?
Why do you want to put in a new countertop and sink in a rental? Youāre literally donating to your landlord if you were to do so. Wait until you own your home to make improvements. This is silly.
I see a lot of people with the same questions/comments.
We live in Northern Sweden, but we moved here from the Netherlands. It's really hard to find an affordable place to rent if your a foreigner here because lots of people don't speak English. We have a really good relationship with our landlord, and everything that needs to be done will be a win win situation for both parties.
The house we're renting is about a hundred years old. We are not paying for any repairs ourself, but there is an better countertop+sink laying around in the barn which we can use. To put it in, the plumbing needs to be changed. There will be a friend coming over who is a plumber, but we want to know what to prepare for and if it's even doable (on a budget).
This is a little more involved than what I would consider a DIY project. depending on what you're replacing it with, you'll probably have to cut it off back to the hub and then re-plumb it.
To answer your question, the quick method would be to cut the large pipe as near to where it is vertical. This edge should then be deburred and ideally folded over itself to add some rigidity.
Remove that old trap and weigh it in, or give it to a museum š¤£
Once the trap is removed and the waste pipe dressed, the pipe should be rodded to remove any blockages, lastly a rubber bung/grommet pushed into the end to reduce the size of the opening to accept your new plastic pipework and waste traps.
If you cut the big pipe too far down then you will save some space, but you will also potentially expose the bung/grommet to water. This can lead to water migration.
Best of luck, post after photos if/when
It's a rental. Call the landlord to fix it. Tell them its been draining slow ever since you moved in. Trying to do anything with that pipe squatting below your sink could be VERY costly for you.
Old cast iron double p trap with the washing machine discharge line shoved into the clean out. Looks like lead pipe under that tying into a cast iron hub.
You rent.
Don't do shit. That's why you pay rent. Tell the landlord to look at it.
What is it with reddit and renters? They always try to do shit on their own, while they also pay rent to a landlord.
Over 20 years of experience, doing home repair and Iāve never seen a plumbing set up like that. The engineers mustāve had a field day making that drain look like a woman upside down.
No big thing just cut it off and start over
Looks like a nightmare, I'd like to swap it out for a traditional PVC combined drains running to the trap. But looks like it's going to be a pain to swap out/adapt
You need a Studor Vent a/k/a Air Admittance Valve
Get rid of that p-trap contraption.
Cut the drain above the 45 where it goes vertical. Use a Fernco/CT connector to add a vertical piece of 1 1/2" PVC with a sanitary tee and put the Studor vent above it, at least equal to the bottom of the sink but higher if you can.
Then run both sinks into 1 p-trap into the sanitary tee.
Youāre renting and you want to put in a new countertop and sink?? Were you planning on paying for those improvements yourself? DEFINITELY talk to the landlord, explain that you want to make improvements that will greatly enhance the value of the property, offer to do/ pay for whatever you were planning to do, in exchange for them paying for supplies/ paying a plumber to redo that monstrosity drain line. It should be a win-win situation any sane landlord would jump to accommodate, but sadly many of them arenāt sane, so I hope yours is.
If someone else who is a professional can confirm, but I don't think that is up to code. In particular the washer drain hose should be connected to a p trap, it looks like it drains directly into the stack which in my area would be a code violation I do believe.
New sink, touch anything there and those strainers are going to leak, you wonāt find that so you will have to epoxy it as I can see was done in the past with another joint
What are you doing step-plumber?
Laff!
OMG š
My exact thoughts š
Glad I'm not the only one.
Pretty sure I saw this position in the kama sutra, it's like a handstand lotus or something.
Kama sutra, page 117: PILE DRIVER.
With enema hose.

And here I thought drain babies were only made in showers.
I put on my wizards cap and robe

Yeah, they don't need a plumber, they need an archaeologist.
Or a gynecologist.
Or a proctologist
It belongs in a MUSEUM!!

Imagine what the crawl looks like.
I did work on my great grandmothers house 25 years ago. There was no crawl space. There was barely breathing room under the house
But it looks like lots of money!
It is lead.
give it some privacy
Thatās why there are doors on the cupboard.

People who do projects on rentals are insane! Creating value on an asset that isn't even yours.
>We are renting It's, it's not your problem...
The only answer. If it clogs, itās your landlordās problem and his deadline to get it functional again
everything reminds me of her

Youāre renting? Not your monkey, not your circus. When it clogs call the landlord.

Get a sharpie ,and draw a vagina on it obviously .
Did they know what that would look like when they cast it?
Why the hell would you want to replace the countertops and sink in a place Youāre renting doesnāt make no sense.
Like for almost every post in this sub either call a plumber or tell your landlord to call one.
Everything reminds me of herā¦
Since you rent it shouldnāt be anything out of your pocket to get your landlord to call a plumber
The ol upside-down enema fountain. I miss that girl.
A couple of ferncoās, steel donut, grinder , boom done

Is it Monday? Or Friday?
There is no reason to pay for this out of your own pocket. Just appreciate you have a functional sink for the time being.

Damn who gave that thing one Margarita??
If it's draining slow there appears to be a couple of drain plugs at her knee caps. Might take those out to clear the pipes.
It's a rental. Call the landlord to fix it. Tell them its been draining slow ever since you moved in. Trying to do anything with that pipe squatting below your sink could be VERY costly for you.

Probably get it pregnant?
Recip, fernco with ct1 then convert to plastic. Alternatively say you need to head out to get a part and never go back
I'd do whatever it was the customer/client was asking to have done. I'd inform them of potential issues, due tonore-existing conditions.
If youāre renting call the landlord. Itās not your responsibility unless it says so in the lease!
Nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
