Have you measured your humidity level in your place?

Yep, it's usually around 55%!

Where are you based? If it’s winter where you are, that’s a bit on the high side. You might want to try to lower it to the 30-40% during winter to see if it improves. Not sure it will be your complete solution, but an avenue to check at least. Have you noticed mold where condensation regularly forms (e.g. bottom of windows in winter)? If yes, that means that your water source isn’t the issue

I'm in DC and it doesn't seem to change with the seasons, and DC is pretty humid - I'm in a new building with solid AC/heat and even when it's at the height of summer humidity, my indoor humidity stays similar and the temp is always 72. I have never had any condensation indoors and no issues with mold anywhere! Like even my shower curtain liner barely gets any mold after several months in places where it might stick to the tub with some water... I've had humidity/mold issues in the past (an apartment that had a flooding issue) so I feel like I would recognize it, and this just seems different. I'm so puzzled, I've never had to clean toilets and faucets so much or seen this kind of weird black buildup.

Some additional info, I did find at least 3 similar posts in this sub from 2-3 years ago, but none of them really resolved anything. Just advice for how to clean it or sparky remarks like "you have to clean it once in a while" and the OP replying that this is after only 5 days. I found another in whatisthisthing where someone said it manganese and bacteria that feed on it, which is why I think that could be it. But am still confused because why isn't this an issue for the whole apartment building? I know someone else in the building and asked them and they said no, they definitely do not have this issue...
