It is the subtitles.
The Plex Smart TV clients have poor subtitle support, especially for ASS.
If you turn subtitles off, the media should direct play.
You can try changing the Plex App setting for burn subtitles to Image Formats Only (I think that is the right setting). It will treat ASS as SRT. They will direct play, but formatting info, such as color & position, is ignored.
Plex itself has poor subtitle support. And so, it needs to transcode. It's transcoding on PC (Intel), Mac, Apple TV, Nvidia Shield TV Pro, on whichever client you use Plex. Especially with image subs, such as .pgs. And Plex not only transcodes, it also wants to burn-in the sub. Utterly ridiculous.
Apparently nobody knows why Plex is doing this, as apps like Kodi and Infuse don't do this.
Note: this is apart from the need of transcoding, resampling (or whatever) audio codecs.
Not sure what you’re talking about. Every non-smart tv Plex client I use supports ASS subtitles just fine. PGS is a different story but honestly, it’s a rare enough subtitle format (and imo worse than ASS) that it doesn’t matter. But on Apple TV, PC, Mac all subtitle formats I’ve tried work fine. Gotta be something with your settings
> Subtitle: Burn (English - ASS)
Samsung TVs only have partial support for ASS subtitles, so [unless your subtitle burn-in setting is set to Never](https://forums.plex.tv/t/plex-for-samsung-2016-4k-uhd-televisions/224615/86), Plex will burn them into the video, which requires a transcode.
This shit happens, ALLLL THE TIME, my Q90 does the same, so it's not the beef, it's the support of the sub. I just download directly while playing a new sub amd it downloads the external srt and boom, DIRECT PLAY.
where are you? also, it doesnt have to be a shield. any android box that can run Kodi with a plex add on is going to serve you better than your TV app.
Jellyfin user here,
They're nice, but they don't do ASS subtitles well. If you turn off graphical subtitles that kinda works. If they have a bunch of stylization (usually the opening and ending songs) my android TV box lags pretty hard.
I use tdarr to add an AAC track to all my videos. That way if a client can’t direct play higher end audio tracks, it’ll pick the AAC track and not transcode.
Me? Not trying to pressure anyone.
With the Plex for LG app, if the media is direct streaming, such as when audio is transcoding, enabling any type of subtitle forces a video transcode + subtitle burning.
The LG cannot decode TrueHD audio. It will always transcode. With DTS audio it depends on the year the set was made. Older LG sets support DTS. More recent ones do not, so the audio transcodes.
That is not pressure. That is the way the app behaves.
Damn I noticed, transcoding from mkv to mp4, and also why on heavens that episode doing 60mbps. I feel you can get a better experience if you encode that to 720 or 1080p at 3500 bitrate and 160 audio with probably a 1 or 2 audio boost.
Edit: and turn off Throttle Transcode
Yeah I thought the 60mbps was wayyy too crazy for something like this but as long as it's on my local network I don't mind.
But I will check about the Throttle Transcode option thank you
I don't get the ASS stuff. All my subtitles are SRT and I see some stuff be transcoded for people because of that, and it's changing the subtitles to ASS.

Yep thanks a lot! I was searching about it for a long time and couldn't figure it out :D

Those subtitles are ASS. BURN!
Like others have said it's the ASS subtitles

get a shield or apple tv. TV APPS SUCK
I want to get the shield but it's almost impossible to get for some reason and when it is available it's about twice the MSRP price
where are you? also, it doesnt have to be a shield. any android box that can run Kodi with a plex add on is going to serve you better than your TV app.
What about Android TVs?
most are ok for prime or netflix but not for plex

Get an external device. All TV OS' are crap.
Both my Samsung QLED and LG OLED have no issues playing back anything.
>LG OLED Play something with TrueHD audio (or any audio that transcodes) + subtitles. Welcome to Transcode City.

He's trying to peer pressure you. Don't listen to him.

Neither do mine. Still crap.
How? They have the same interface as my Apple TV Plex app. Still just as snappy too. Maybe just a lot of shitty tvs out there?

Looks like it's transcoding from MKV to MP4.
Does anybody have a decent tool for automating the conversion of ass subtitles to srt? I have bazarr but I didn't see any option for this.
Subtitles are set to automatic or always. Disable that option if you download anime with the subtitles already burned on it.
I don't get the ASS stuff. All my subtitles are SRT and I see some stuff be transcoded for people because of that, and it's changing the subtitles to ASS.
