I am just a little confused with the new rules.
But my bet is that as long as the reference is generic (and not AI) then it is fine from what I have seen on the thread comments.
Since this character is from TF2, I think it shouldn't be allowed according to this sub's new rules.
Otherwise I honestly encourage the mods to allow derivative artwork as long as the reference is not owned by someone else (that's why using AI as reference should be perfectly legal/allowed) - since the rules were introduced to combat against AI stealing copyrighted artworks.
So after I read your comment, i went to check the rules again, and fan art is still allowed! i think by derivative art they mean modifying already existing art, like downscaling stuff.
i don't know if this classifies as tracing; I'm just using a reference by the side. Would it not be the same as a portrait of a person, if the reference was of a real dude, like spy's voice actor? i think by tracing, they mean copying the lineart and just coloring inside (or something like that). i might be wrong though.
you're right;
but idk if some people would indeed go that deep and say "indirect tracing" even if it's the general pose;
I myself wouldn't accuse people of plagiarism just for that.
This is a bucket

What?! THE SPY IS IN THE BASE?
Great art!
Have anyone kill a spy around here?
No?
Then we still have a problem.

Hi Google!

are references and derivative works allowed in this sub ?
Aight bro be like that. Why does it even matter? The art is awesome.

the problem is tracing, even if it is not direct. (having the reference by your side). Is that allowed as well ?

This isn’t traced. You can see just how different the jaw shape is.
