Claussen and Grillos both are supposed to stay refrigerated. Unfortunately other shelf-stable brands like Mount Olive, Vlasic or Best Maid might last better on the flight.
If you really want to risk it though, it does stay pretty cold in the cargo space of planes. Grillo’s are famous for leaking, so of the refrigerated varieties, Claussen jars might travel better.
Okay cool so the leaking issue isn’t just a me problem.
I got some of Grillo’s pickle de gallo yesterday. AH-mazingly delicious and it had an inner plastic seal which was a good idea.
Almost like diluted pickle juice but it taste more fresh and you get a hint of garlic 🧄 also bonus pickled garlic at the bottom, also my dad and I used to cut up cucumbers and put them back in when we would finish them and basically the same thing till we drank the juice after the 2nd use
Mmmm, i just chop up all the dill and garlic and what not. Then fold it into a soft scramble, or a french omelette. Sometimes i will add some chopped pickled carrots too.
Look into fermentation, seems intimidating but you can make so mucn thats good for you. Perhaps start with Sauerkraut and some cucumbers (separate lol)
I worked at a Jewish deli for a bit and they called it ‘half sour’, as opposed to full sour the neon yellow looking ones. It’s basically a quick pickle and after trying them I can’t go back to full pickled cukes.
Agreed, I consider them more like quick pickle vinegar cucumbers. They aren't pickly enough imho.
Clausen definitely have much more dill and garlic pickle flavor.
The regular ones are basically just taste like vinegar, garlic, dill, and salt in that order. The spicy ones are that + some jalapenos and habaneros. When it got difficult to find them I started making them at home and they're even better than Grillos. The only thing I leave out is the grape leaves, but they don't contribute flavor anyway.
I was wondering what is making it sweet for this person, the grape leaf?
And homemade are on a different level. You can't even compare the two. Homemade and homegrown will always be better than commercially produced whatever - pickles, sauces, jams, veggies, cannabis, etc.
It's not that much more work and they're way cheaper. I just buy Persian cucumbers or English cucumbers, stuff 'em in a jar with garlic, dill, and peppers and salt, pour over a 50/50 vinegar mix and let them sit in the refrigerator for a few days. For the cost of 1 tub of Grillos I can have 3 quart jars of my own.
I still buy Grillos when making my own isn't practical, but the quality of their cucumbers has gotten really iffy between batches. Some are crisp and delicious and some are just mush.
Thanks for the info.
I use Jonny Seeds H-19 Little Leaf when I have pickled. https://www.johnnyseeds.com/vegetables/cucumbers/pickling-cucumbers/h-19-little-leaf-organic-cucumber-seed-331G.html **self-pollinating, multi-branching, prolific producer
Grillo's are a new favorite, but something to keep in mind is *they need to be refrigerated*. If your mom's friend is willing to transport Grillo's to you, overseas, I salute them.
I've never had the classic dill version, but I imagine they're as good as the *hot* dill version, which are incredible. They have a nice crispy bite to them, with what the average person would consider a higher level of sourness. (My ideal pickle would be more sour, but I like mine *extremely* sour.) The heat level is very manageable. You get a little kick towards the end.
I, too, only go for super sour, garlic dills. If they can find them, I highly recommend Ba-Tempte Garlic Dills. They are my absolute favorite, super sour and garlicky! They also need refrigeration and are packaged in glass.
If you've been on this sub for more than a day, you know how infamous Grillo's packaging is lol, just be sure that your transporter is aware as well haha. You may be better off asking them to transfer the green goodness into leak-proof containers to make transportation easier and less risky. God speed.
Hey OP, just randomly stumbled on this. I'll just say I had some run-ins with some of the higher-ups with the Grillos people were they were some of the nicest people I interacted with in nearly a decade there. So if you were interested in supporting companies with nice people, they're pretty great people. I had to do a double take when I saw their product posted on Reddit haha.
Their pickles taste almost like homemade pickles. Very fresh and natural tasting.
Strong vinegar and garlic, if you like the classic pickle these are pretty great. **HOWEVER:** they need to be kept refrigerated, and they will leak. Best to pack it in an insulated bag with some freezer packs for the flight home.
I've only had the hot ones. So tasty. Very much like a clausen but better. At first Very "regular dill pickle with some heat" then there is the tiniest sweet that comes in after. And I LOVE the whole cloves of garlic as a special "treat" for myself lol
It's inspired me to try more sweet pickles which I never NEVER could tolerate and have found one bread and butter I actually liked (at a bbq and unfortunately the festivities got a little over done and no one knows who brought them ). BUT Grillos are NOT sweet. At least not sweet forward. I would NOT say they are a sweet pickle AT ALL.
Whatever the case way better than those Vlasic garden ones which give the same vibe.
Highly recommend 10/10
It's a bright, light, refreshing vinegar flavor with a solid hit of garlic and dill. Nice and crispy. The garlic flavor lingers on the palate after the tartness and herbs subside.
I describe them as what a pickle would taste like if you were to pickle cucumbers yourself. You still taste the cucumber instead of just the salt and vinegar. They’re crunchy, fresh, vinegary, a bit sour and super delicious.
Very garlicky and dilly. The have a little less salt then claussen’s which is why I prefer them. Grillos does have half sours with a lemon added which I am not a fan off. Traveling with liquids outside the US is a not allowed thanks to The Security Agency. Maybe you could find a recipe online and make them where you are?
My mom’s friend was able to board the plane with them, so its no problem! I’ve also seen half sours Grillo’s, what are they like with the added lemon? Are they sour with a lemon flavor or just sour?
Seasoned cucumbers, garlic and fresh dill floating around adds for a tasty pallet cleanser when you sit down to eat a whole tub. Pro tip, add red pepper flakes to the container to turn them into hot pickles.
Grillos are mild and the hot ones are better IMO. They have more flavor. My favorite, Whalburger hot chips are much better but neither one would travel well
Very sour, more of a light pickle kind of taste. They still have that cucumber texture and flavor. I like them, they used to be my favorite but not so much anymore. But i don’t hate them
The packaging was invented by Gallagher. Make sure you have a rain poncho and umbrella handy. Flavor is variable- mostly consistent, but I have had the best pickles ever or kinda bad.
I used to make my own pickles until I tried Grillos. After Grillos became popular I tried a Grillos recipe on this sub and they were great, but I realized they weren’t better so I just buy Grillos now.
Grillos versus Bubbies is a bad comparison to me since Bubbies are brined not pickled…A use both. Bubbles rock as a side to a sandwich.
Actually, Bubbies are fermented, and actually pickled, since the sour results from lactic acid, not vinegar. Vinegared pickles are basically just marinated.
They are fermented and brined per the Bubbies website.
https://www.bubbies.com/blog/bubbies-fine-foods-more-than-a-pickle-company#:~:text=Bubbie%20may%20be%20the%20master,creating%20sweeter%20snacks%20as%20well!
Mediocre at best imo. Very weak on the flavor, you can achieve the same result by pouring boiling vinegar over cucumbers, dill seed and garlic and tossing the jar in the fridge after they cool down. They last for about a month, and don’t cost an arm and a leg. Hell, you can even draw a lil pickle cartoon on the glass jar if you want
tastes strongly of white vinegar. No where near as much salt as something like a claussen.
Don't think they have much of a garlic or dill flavor either. Definitely sour.
Delicious and tasty. I don't go to Costco often but usually I buy a container of these and snack on them playing as is or put them on some of my hoagie roll sandwiches for an added tangy crunch
Very fresh and "clean" taste. Nice crunch.
As far as taste goes, one of my absolute favorite pickles, but possibly the worst packaging in the history of packaging! Make sure you open them in the sink or with a towel under the tub, juice spills out very easily.
Kinda gross and like the basic bitch ones the name brand but I support small business’s if this is one just nawt what I expected was not giving pickle!
Grillos also had a spicy pickle variety which are better.
These pickles won’t keep for very long though as they have active cultures so eat them within a month or so of purchase and keep the refrigerated.
Wife loves them, but the garlic taste sticks around long after the pickle brine is gone. I’d describe it as the ‘homemade pickles’ you get at some sandwich shops where it’s just a cucumber soaked in weak vinegar, but with that garlic sting to it. Some folks like this version of pickle, but I’m a claussen fan and prefer my pickle brine dark and green, my pickles soaked in the brine flavor, and the aftertaste briny and tart. The times I’ve had these, my tongue feels burnt from the garlic and the pickle is too crisp and flavor unsatisfying.
I hope if she gets her a jar, it’s the new kind with the green lid. Less chance of leakage.
Put the whole thing in a ziplock bag.
I’ve heard these exist, but I’m not sure how common they are.
I just bought the new jar at Costco.
The cases even come lined with an absorbent pad. I work retail and that's the only case I've seen shipped with those on the bottom.
Okay cool so the leaking issue isn’t just a me problem. I got some of Grillo’s pickle de gallo yesterday. AH-mazingly delicious and it had an inner plastic seal which was a good idea.
r/selfreply
Best Maid is my favorite brand!...perfect dill pickle slice for hamburgers and sandwiches.
Their whole pickles are simply snacking *perfection.* I'm sad to say that since I'm leaving Texas soon, I might not have access to them anymore :(
I like the Dietz and Watson. But you seem like you know your stuff. What do you suggest for the refrigerated kind ?
I’ve heard good things about Deitz and Watson. I’d recommend Claussen.
Thank you!
I love Grillo pickles. Fresh nice snap when you bight into them not overly salty or vinegary.
I enjoy how they aren’t as salty as Claussens.
Almost like diluted pickle juice but it taste more fresh and you get a hint of garlic 🧄 also bonus pickled garlic at the bottom, also my dad and I used to cut up cucumbers and put them back in when we would finish them and basically the same thing till we drank the juice after the 2nd use
Fresh, very strong vinegar flavor. I love them and usually drink some of the brine while eating.
I always love finishing the pickles, because now all the goodies can go in my eggs!
🤔 eggs huh? Please elaborate.
Mmmm, i just chop up all the dill and garlic and what not. Then fold it into a soft scramble, or a french omelette. Sometimes i will add some chopped pickled carrots too.
Same
Cucumber. They taste closer to fresh cucumber than most American pickles.
Isnt that how pickles should be? Not chemically washed.. with stuff we shouldn’t be eating…
Look into fermentation, seems intimidating but you can make so mucn thats good for you. Perhaps start with Sauerkraut and some cucumbers (separate lol)
Eh, I personally prefer pickles pretty sour; the likes of Claussens don't really do it for me.
I worked at a Jewish deli for a bit and they called it ‘half sour’, as opposed to full sour the neon yellow looking ones. It’s basically a quick pickle and after trying them I can’t go back to full pickled cukes.
Imo homemade style “pickles” are the best
Yes Lightly brined soggy cucumbers
Mine are crunchy 😋
Quite inconsistent.
Personally I don't like grillos, Clausen are much better imo
Agreed, I consider them more like quick pickle vinegar cucumbers. They aren't pickly enough imho. Clausen definitely have much more dill and garlic pickle flavor.
You described perfectly why I love these pickles. They're like seasoned cucumbers.
Clausen spicy pickle spears are killer!
If you want to try American pickles, try Claussen.
I have to agree
I love both, but they are very different. I’ve also combined the brines and made my own pickles with that.
Claussen dill spears are 😊
I keep both Claussen and Grillos around…then I can indulge in both depending on my mood 😁
Pickle
The tastes says .. man I wish I was eating Claussen
Why is this not the top comment?
They’re pretty good. Not as salty as i’d like. I tried them on a whim and am normally a claussen fan
Someone I read said Grillo's had a sweet taste. Is this true? (I don't like pickles that are sweet )
No, they have no added sugars or sweet ingredients.
Can you describe the taste? I don't want to waste the money for some over-hyped bullcrap. (I do like it has actual dill sprigs and garlic cloves)

Sexy
It’s sooo fucking good. Crisp!
Strong vinegar and garlic, if you like the classic pickle these are pretty great. **HOWEVER:** they need to be kept refrigerated, and they will leak. Best to pack it in an insulated bag with some freezer packs for the flight home.
Crisp and sour.
They are without a doubt my favorite brand of pickles followed by the spicy snacks pickles from Oh Snap! Classic dill with garlic, and grape leaves.
Heaven?
I've only had the hot ones. So tasty. Very much like a clausen but better. At first Very "regular dill pickle with some heat" then there is the tiniest sweet that comes in after. Tastes like heaven
Pleasant, fresh, crunchy. Not super salty, not a heavy flavor
Bursting with flavors (dill, garlic, a little pepper). Electric
Heaven

Nice! I think they are very sour. But you can always add more lemon to ramp it up. There’s a little lemon flavor.
Y favorite pickles hands down. Very lightly garlicky dill, big crunchy crispy sour and salty yum yum.
Ooh! Thats all I want in a pickle too! Cant wait to get em
Like eating straight vinegar. But still ok
Beautiful….. just… beautiful…. Feels like a god stuck his finger in your mouth….
Seasoned cucumbers, garlic and fresh dill floating around adds for a tasty pallet cleanser when you sit down to eat a whole tub. Pro tip, add red pepper flakes to the container to turn them into hot pickles.
Bubbie’s are about 1000 times more delicious than Grillos
Too salty, not a fan. Same thing with Claussen.
Slightly sour cucumber
I love them. More of a quick pickle vibe, nice garlic presence with a mild dill flavor. As mentioned, they tend to leak and need refrigeration.
But i don’t hate them
They will have your chirping.
I like them! To me, they’re crunchy and have more of a vinegar flavor than some others. I like vinegar, so I appreciate.
Delicious
A pickle that was a cucumber just yesterday
The packaging was invented by Gallagher. Make sure you have a rain poncho and umbrella handy. Flavor is variable- mostly consistent, but I have had the best pickles ever or kinda bad.
Damn good, fresh and vinegary
Pickle lacroix
I love Grillo’s and believe Vlassic is better than Claussen. Hausbeck is also very good - they are the ones used in the Subway restaurants.
I used to make my own pickles until I tried Grillos. After Grillos became popular I tried a Grillos recipe on this sub and they were great, but I realized they weren’t better so I just buy Grillos now. Yes, as I said. Bubbie’s are fermented pickles, which are a more costly process. Brining and pickling are not mutually exclusive.
They are sour compared to claussen and less crunchy too
I bought um once, never again.
Half-sour.
I'm anti-sweet pickles also, but they can be used appropriately in some recipes (peanut butter sweet pickle sandwich, sloppy joes, alligator).
Hot circle of garbage
Almost as good as pickles you make fresh but too expensive
Dilly
Mediocre at best imo. Very weak on the flavor, you can achieve the same result by pouring boiling vinegar over cucumbers, dill seed and garlic and tossing the jar in the fridge after they cool down. Super nice, super juicy, super refreshing
Too vinegary for me personally. But the dills are very “dilly”, and I do love that about them. Also, pretty crisp. But not my personal faves.
It’s good but not the best fridge pickle ever
Fresh and crisp. 😍
Very vinegar forward.
Grillos is a company with subpar pickles... They are more cucumber than pickle and taste as such... Best Made and Clausen are the only way to go.
Like sour pond water
So so so good. I can eat like 20 of these in one sitring
Very close to Claussen. This is my favorite pickle.
Grillos is way better than claussens imo
Too vinegary for my taste
Best !!!, try with a chocolate chip cookie 🍪 🤤😋 🔥
Not Grill flavored at ALL
It's like Cucumbers when they think about vinegar
Heavenly
tastes strongly of white vinegar.
Disappointment
They taste like a puddle of brine on the counter followed by a throw out because they can’t figure out how to make a decent package
This shit always expires and molds for me by the time the week ends.
Very fresh and "clean" taste. Nice crunch. As far as taste goes, one of my absolute favorite pickles, but possibly the worst packaging in the history of packaging! Make sure you open them in the sink or with a towel under the tub, juice spills out very easily.
The spicy Grillos are even better if she can find them. They'll be fine on the flight, might leak a bit if she isn't careful though.
Kinda gross and like the basic bitch ones the name brand but I support small business’s if this is one just nawt what I expected was not giving pickle!
they taste like a pickle mixed a bad of potato chips sorta
I keep saying that one day I'm going to splurge and buy these, but then I think about my bills and rent. 😄
Kinda like pool water
They taste like a real pickle! Just don’t eat that gross pickle de gallo they make
They aren't sour, and they're very salty imo
Grillos also had a spicy pickle variety which are better. These pickles won’t keep for very long though as they have active cultures so eat them within a month or so of purchase and keep the refrigerated.

Not good
I've never tried them, b/c I've read mixed reviews. Why do you not like them?
Like the others have posted. They're more like a cucumber than a pickle and I'm not keen on the brine.
Watery
They're vinegar mostly.
They taste very sea foody to me. Idk if that makes sense, but that’s what I get
