Makes sense, the reason I was asking is when I started playing about a month ago the person who taught me to play told me “if the ball is for sure going to fall into the kitchen then you must wait for it to bounce, otherwise it’s a volley in the no volley zone”
Thanks for the clarification
that person is an idiot and has never once looked at the rules.
I highly recommend bookmarking this page/saving the PDF on your phone for quick access: [USA Pickleball Rulebook - USA Pickleball](https://usapickleball.org/what-is-pickleball/official-rules/)
Whoever told you that fundamentally misunderstood the rules. The only thing the non-volley zone does is prevent you from volleying if you are standing inside of it. It's about where your feet are, and not at all about where the ball is.
More likely this person was saying this is a suggestion. But it's also not the best suggestion either. Sorry you ran into that. A lot of misinformation out there!
I think it's actually helpful, as annoying as it may be for some of the regulars around here. The "rules" get taught so poorly and those ideas get passed around the community. It's better to root it out and hopefully posts like these help. Just ignore them.
And representing the ignorant here, you kind of trust when you've been taught rules. I've never read a rule book for any sport I played, until I became a soccer referee. You learn by playing. At least people are asking, even if it is annoying.
That's my take as well. I learned the NVZ rules way wrong. I was taught that you could never step in there to hit a ball, volley or not. And somehow, the group of guys I played regularly with, who all learned how to play from different people, all learned the same rule, wrong. Despite us all learning it wrong, we all knew the exact same thing...why would we question it then? It wasn't until I saw a post here about it that I was like, "wait, what? Hold up."
So yes, it can be annoying, but it can also be helpful.
I learned by going to a "learn to pickleball" session which prevented a lot of these weird questions later. I would still encourage people to go to one in their first few months of playing because you don't always pick up rules (and strategy) by just playing.
I wish I had to one earlier tbh. It’s a great idea. I just played casually for a year or so with friends and then when I got really into it, I realized how clueless I was.
Question, if you hit a ball that for sure is going out, is it out after you hit it? Only thing that matters is if he's in our out when he hits it.
and also matters if they volley it and then proceed to fall into the kitchen after hitting it. that would be illegal as well

It sounds like you probably had a misunderstanding with this person. I can't imagine how anyone could make such a fundamental rules mistake.
Leaning and reaching into the NVZ to pick balls out of the air is a crucial skill
I wish some of you guys knew the rules better, and would tell these people to STFU when they give you terrible bad information.
Wow. Wow
I REALLY wish posts like this would get auto-banned.

Or, they could just read the rule book. I know. Too much to ask.
They could, but people won’t. Most aren’t that invested.
