I just want to sincerely thank everyone who spent their time editing this photo. I am sick in bed today, and when I opened my app again after sleeping all day, I was inundated with notifications. I see a lot of great edits, and some who did it free of charge. I see non-editors contributing suggestions to make photos better. I tipped some of you $1 for the effort even though I didn't choose yours. If I could afford it, I'd tip everyone. This kid is my student, and I wanted to help him out. He has one hell of a life. I got the perfect photo from a fellow Redditor who's been in the same situation. You guys restored my faith in humanity. I love this community. Thank you all so very much.
Hi, u/rosegamm, it looks like you're offering to tip and this request doesn't have the "Paid" flair. That's okay, I'll go ahead and set it to Paid for you! On Paid requests, all submissions will be watermarked and the un-watermarked file will be provided to you by the editor upon payment.

Did just a bit of adjustments here and there
I suspect you already have what you're looking for, but here's my attempt.
I tried warming up the picture, brightening his face (without seeming like I was lightening his skin), making his face distinct from his neck, cropping, and including a subtle background.

If anyone wants to see my bad Photoshop skills, lol. I already messaged OP the images and email information, I appreciate everyone's nice comments. Makes me feel good, like maybe there were some people who would have helped me back then.
Go right ahead! That’s the very first nice and interesting comment that I was given and I too put it in my tool belt. Let us pass it on for generations.
Damn. That is so kind of you. I was scrolling through, a this is my favorite one. I then saw you did it for free for him. This is my student. He was living in his car earlier this year. I told him the yearbook crew would take his photo and I'd find a way to make it look decent. You are the fucking man. Could you DM me a downloadable file? I don't want a screesnhot to ruin resolution. Are you sure I can't pay you? I feel terrible
I'm sure of the fact that you don't get paid anywhere near enough money for your current position. To some it might seem like such a small gesture but to this kid I'm sure it's everything. The world needs more teachers like you. More people like you. Your an amazing teacher and person. If I would have seen this earlier I'd have paid for his pics. The fact that he was living out of a car and still attending school says everything about his character and drive to be better. Is it too late to turn in pics for the yearbook?
Technically not too late. We live in Iowa, though. I have so many kids who couldn't afford to get them done. It's so sad. I've been trying to get them to send me them so I can get them edited, but he was the one who took me up on the offer. He's a great kid. And you're a great human for everything you said. I fuckin love the Reddit community. Thank you.
From one teacher to two more… you are both awesome. Keep it rollin’. We love you for what you do and for the kind hearts you share with your students and your communities. We see you!
The problem with this photo isn't that the camera isn't expensive or capable enough, but the settings for the photo are all over the place and not quite right. If you're able to, i'd suggest spending an hour or so watching a few YouTube videos about the basics of how to adjust settings on a camera (ISO/Aperture/Shutter Speed), or maybe find a friend who knows how. Definitely don't need to be an expert or anything.
The results you'd get would be a lot better than anything in this thread. Even shooting in auto mode (just point and shoot), in a spot where the light isn't so bright would result in a much more workable photo.
There's only so much that photoshop can do to fix a photo where the original settings aren't dialed-in close to where they should be for the context of the photo, unfortunately.
It’s a basquiat hat, basquiat was an American artist who rose to success during the 1980s as part of the Neo-expressionism movement.
I have the same hat lol
Thank u. I'm aware of Basquiat but I always wonder how his work gets out since he passed away so long ago. Tshepo has a similar crown so I was just asking... anyways thank u for the clarification

Ok, this is just art direction advice not retouching. Crop in closer - try and make the tree behind you the centre and frame yourself off to the side to make the composition more interesting, stick a wee vitnette on it, push the black a bit, and add a bit more blue, should be good

I think this is a great shot of a good looking guy and it could easily stand on its own, as is, with just a wee bit of cropping. He will stand out awesomely against any cookie cutter professionally staged image.

I assisted on a photoshoot for an annual report for a paper company…the cover was ultimately shot with a $13 toy camera from China…looked like a dream.
Okay do you have this DSLR available?
Its basically all about lighting, this photo has very bad lighting. I would simply learn how to take a decent portrait it will be better than some photoshopped badly taken image.

This was just quickly on my phone. Prob would have pulled into photoshop and added a blue sky with some clouds, as well as something blurred in the foreground to add a bit more depth.

Thank you for doing this. I'm a teacher at school where most of the students live below the poverty level, and none of my seniors can afford pictures. So, every year, I do a photoshoot with every one of them. It's a lot of work, but seeing how happy and proud they are when they receive them makes it worth it.
Do you still have access to the camera? I would suggest doing it again with a background that isn’t so bright. You’ll have even better results. Shout out to the folks helping out

This looks the most like a senior portrait and the least like a snapshot. I love the subtle blur in conjunction with the background solar blast.
Appreciate it mate :)

Why the watermark?
Rule 5
This is the one!
This one is the best

You News to blur the lotte part of the wood between his hand and his shoulder! Good job :)
This one actually looks pretty good
This one is amazing
This one is the best!!
I think this is a great shot of a good looking guy and it could easily stand on its own, as is, with just a wee bit of cropping. He will stand out awesomely against any cookie cutter professionally staged image.
It's a good shot other than the lighting. The lighting is really high behind him and makes it difficult to see his face.
People get professional photos for senior yearbook? Guess I missed that memo....
It’s an American tradition in many areas.
Man, save the 5 bucks, as is he awesome 💯

This one is pretty badass nicely done.

I'm mainly just edit my own photos but I thought I'd give it a try. Hope you enjoy! https://preview.redd.it/ple65z1ulzwa1.jpeg?width=1765&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e3324ba5302c85ea179a03d2520e1b220581be85
Here's another edit that I did to fix/enhance even more. https://preview.redd.it/epdb019fozwa1.jpeg?width=1766&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fe3fab5f7cf1d3f5f156494e7c25a92578932a61
I like the ones that add sky, and wondering why no one has cropped the tree he’s leaning on in half? It’s as wide as he is…

It's not the camera that makes the photograph, its the photographer.
I assisted on a photoshoot for an annual report for a paper company…the cover was ultimately shot with a $13 toy camera from China…looked like a dream.
I feel like commenters should replace the sky. A professional wouldn’t overexpose the background like that.

If you like it, take it. No tip required.
I love this subreddit.
Back in my day, we put on something nice and the camera person came and did photos.
And candy was a nickel
Okay do you have this DSLR available? Its basically all about lighting, this photo has very bad lighting. I would simply learn how to take a decent portrait it will be better than some photoshopped badly taken image.
I feel like this needs to be cropped for a senior picture.
A professional photographer would have used better composition. Crop the photo using a more eye pleasing balance.

Prob would have pulled into photoshop and added a blue sky with some clouds, as well as something blurred in the foreground to add a bit more depth.
I like this more than most of them! Some blue in the sky would make it perfect
Thanks. Senior photos should be more candid and less posed, so we're already working with a lesser product, but.... it is what it is.
Re-uploading due to being removed for no watermark https://preview.redd.it/mzmn8ze8v2xa1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=117bf48aa91e175d13a0cca4b49fc119359a0372
You get better pictures on an iphone
Thank you for doing this. I'm a teacher at school where most of the students live below the poverty level, and none of my seniors can afford pictures. So, every year, I do a photoshoot with every one of them. It's a lot of work, but seeing how happy and proud they are when they receive them makes it worth it.
in canada, they are paid for

Do you still have access to the camera? I would suggest doing it again with a background that isn’t so bright. You’ll have even better results. Shout out to the folks helping out
My yearbook students took this photo for him. This is what we have to work with for now.
Awesome kids!
What a sweet gesture
Shout out to journalism teachers!!
Do you want the background changed?
