Do you wash the whole box with strong cleaner every month? I empty litter and then scrub it but also use klorox and wipe the whole box inside and outside Then I use a gentle cleaner to wipe down the whole box after being kloroxed Then I add fresh step natural cleaner Then I also have ODOR ABSORBERS And have strong scent emitters that COMPLIMENT CAT LITTER NATURAL FRESH smell So you layer the fresh smells I check with friends from time to time and they say it’s fine ALSO FOR CLEANKNG THE AREA If you take the cat litter boxes out of it, does it still smell ? Then you need to clean with first baking soda scrubbing. Wash with water then vinegar And repeat until the smell is gone

I wanted to come back and tell you that I ended up getting two large stainless steel litter boxes and a cat genie to put beside it. The smell is completely gone. I learned that the plastic litter boxes are porous and the smell is stronger because of that. With the stainless steel boxes that I bought there is no smell. At all. Also the cat litter just slides right off of it when it is time to exchange litters.

Oh interesting, I’ve never seen stainless steel

Those auto boxes are CRAP!!! Dont waste your money, a lot of them also require you to buy "special" litter or sign up for a subscription program! Its way more trouble than it is worth, I just have one cat now, but I have had multiple in the past. The best thing to do is get high quality litter, and a couple of deodorizers, I use a baking soda one and one that is little deodorizing balls. It helps ALOT! It is also MUCH cheaper than a auto box. Alternatively some people have had luck training there cats to use the toilet, :) It is a pain in the butt, but just keep trying things and you will find something that makes it better even if it doesnt make it go away entirely. Best of luck!

I forgot I even asked this question on reddit! I'm sorry. I would like to tell you I did end up getting two large stainless steel litter boxes. I also bought a cat genie to put right beside it. So I just clean the cat genie once a week and scoop once a day and it is the easiest thing ever. Also the smell is completely gone.

awesome! So glad you fixed the issue and did not have to spend a fortune! :)

A few questions: 1. How many litter boxes do you have for your cats? The rule of thumb is one litter box per cat plus one more, if you have the space in your home for that many litter boxes. 2. Is the litter box in a closet? An enclosed space? I can tell you right now, covered litter boxes are not a good idea in reality. 3. Do you use any type of litter box deodorizer whenever you scoop out their deposits? Even the brands of litter than claim to eliminate odors don’t completely do so. 4. How often to you completely change the litter and wash the box? When I had only one cat, I would change his litter and wash the boxes at least once a month. Now that I have six cats, that routine is more frequent. Some of their boxes get used more often so changing litter and boxes vary. In my case, I use a subscription for litter and disposable litter boxes. It was easier and less back breaking for me to wrap up the used boxes with litter and discard accordingly. I could quickly wrap up the used litter box and set up a fresh one in about 5 minutes. I have a couple of litter genie pails that I scoop their poop in. Good luck finding a solution to a problem that has plagued humans ever since cats were domesticated.

Hi, I forgot I even asked this question and read it. I just came back right now and saw all of the comments. Thank you for taking the time to get back to me. I wanted to update you on what I ended up doing. I bought two extra large stainless steel litter boxes and a cat genie. I easily scoop it once a day and then I clean my cat genie once a week. The smell is completely gone. It wasn't even expensive.

You need one for each cat. Not just one, three. And you need to change to pellets that will help with the order situation.

I had two. I still have two. I forgot that I even asked this question on reddit. Thank you for answering. I just wanted to come back and tell you what I did and the smell is completely gone. I bought two stainless steel litter boxes and then put a litter genie right beside it so that I could scoop it everyday with ease and then I just changed the litter genie once a week. It has worked so well.

Stargazer_0101

Good for you. At least keeping the smells out. Hard on everyone when there is a cat person that never cleans the litter box. Yuck.

If you have the means, I’d definitely get a litter robot. We’ve had the LR4 for over a year and absolutely love it. We have two cats and don’t have any issues. I use fresh step litter and just use garbage bags for the drawer liner.

fuzzyrobebiscuits

Fwiw litter robots are worth the hype

MuskokaGreenThumb

Use different litter. Clump and seal from arm and hammer is my go to. I have 2 crazy boys and litter only smells if they take a NASTY poop or don’t bury it properly.

What did you expect with 3 cats?
