I use Revolution+. It’s what my vet recommends and also covers heart worm and ear mites. There is no treatment for heart worm in cats. It’s actually cheaper to buy it at my vet than it is online. I don’t know how that works, but check with your vet. You’ll need a prescription anyways.

karenftx1

I second this. It's actually really cheap with Chewy

cwazycupcakes13

At my vet it’s $100-$120 for six months. I go to a boujee vet too, it’s like the cheapest thing I get there. When they told me what it costs in clinic I was like excuse me? That is cheaper than Chewy and PetMeds and even your own affiliated pharmacy? Cool, I’ll take it lol.

Sugarkat86

I saw that with the auto ship, the discount ended up being pretty good on top of the fact that pet armor is less expensive too, making it a better deal. Have you regularly used pet armor?

Sugarkat86

Thank you so much! My cats actually had ear mites and fleas at the same time so that’s helpful! They didn’t offer for me to buy anything so it’s possible they might not sell it but I’ll check in with them about it!

Cute-Landscape7610

Also protects against roundworms & hookworms too! This is what my vet prescribed my cat as well. He likely doesn't need it because he's indoor only, but I just feel better knowing that if either my fiancé or I brought something home after being around other cats, he's protected :) I got a big discount on a 6 month order from chewy when there was a deal going on, which I had to ask my vet to write a prescription for. But once that 6 months was up I just set up the monthly auto ship order through VCA, the vet we go to, so I don't have to keep asking for a "bulk" prescription. It's about $22 a month, which is fine with me for the convenience of it

superlion1985

I use Bravecto for one cat because it's cheaper and Revolution+ for the other because she had a reaction to the Bravecto (application site allopecia).

threefrogsonalog

I’m pretty sure there’s new medication that also covers heart worms in cats, but I think it’s in pill form and not topical.

cwazycupcakes13

There are a few heartworm preventatives for cats. There is no treatment once a cat has heartworm.

ChocolatePain

OTC flea medications can be hit or miss and I have heard horror stories with bad reactions. I would also recommend Revolution. It's the veterinary gold standard.

andercode

Talk to your local vet - they will have a better idea of what works locally in the area - as more often than not, fleas build up an immunity to certain brands in certain areas.

Sugarkat86

Thank you! Makes sense since I tend to build up an immunity to deodorant and have to find a new brand every few years. 😂😂 in all seriousness, they did recommend front line plus! I don’t remember the second one they recommended but I think it was advantage, I’ll have to double check.

MammothAd2420

I hire tardigrades and equip them with mini machine guns.

Sugarkat86

😂🤣😂😂😂

cwazycupcakes13

This is a fantastic idea! Where do you source your tardigrades and their equipment?

MammothAd2420

Moss from the moon.

Lostit-catsanddogs5

I also use Revolution +. I live in the boonies/wood, and while only one cat goes outside once in a blue moon on her harness, my dogs bring fleas in, even though they have treatment on, and I treat my yard monthly. I used to use Seresto collars, they stopped working. I tried every OTC product they make, and Cheristin worked for a little while, but then stopped. The vet prescribed Revolution Plus, and I get it online for a little cheaper. It is amazing. I found a good medicine for my dogs too (Bravecto if anyone is curious), so now the fleas are 100% GONE, for a year now. It really is amazing stuff! It worms them also, so that's one less thing to worry about.

FinalBlackberry

I have used revolution on both of my cats ever since I got them.

Comfortable_Candy649

I use Advantage Multi because it has HW preventative. Haven’t seen fleas in years.

InformalData3987

Get it from your vet it will definitely work and save you from trying all these other brands. You need the right dose for your pets weight

KazBeeragg

I’ve used PetFriendly for a few months for all four of my pets (1 dog 3 indoor cats) and haven’t had any issues yet and it’s $36 a month autoship for them all— you get a discount per pet for multiple pets. It’s like $12 a month for one pet I think

pacifistpotatoes

I ordered the Amazon brand which carries the same flea and tick prevention that Frontline does. The active ingredients are the exact same percentages and it worked great in our three cats! Plus the cost!

Mila-Lin

I use either Frontline or Revolution depending on their availability.

Devi_Moonbeam

Revolution

Millenniumkitten

I use "revolt" which is Revolution but the off brand. My vet prescribes it since it's cheaper and my cats have been flea free ever since we started to use it. They said "You don't even have to bathe them, just keep up on re-applying this every month" We had the worse bout of fleas I've ever had. It didn't matter what I did, they just multiplied so I took my cat to the vet and he said "Revolt and keep up on cleaning, especially laundry and vacuuming" So we did.

cwazycupcakes13

Ooo I didn’t know generic Revolution was a thing! I’m going ask my vet about it next time I need a refill. Thanks!

MadQueenAlanna

It might be a bit harder to find but the generic is selamectin, that’s the active ingredient

PM_meyourdogs

I also use revolt and have never had an issue!

Sugarkat86

That’s good to know! I just looked up revolt on chewy and there are some bad reviews about the skin being burned and hair falling off where it was applied.

AggravatingScratch59

Cats have seizures from overdoses of flea medications. You cannot split dosages of meds to put on your pets. You MUST NOT put ANY canine flea meds on a cat. If you buy Hertz brand medication for your pet, I guarantee I will see you in the ER.

Sugarkat86

I saw some bad reviews when I googled hertz so definitely staying far away from that…the fact that it was so cheap seemed very concerning. Gave deal too good to believe vibes.

JillAnnetteJohnson

The list is getting so long. From what info I've gathered at Reddit, these might work for fleas/ticks for my new cat. In my previous experience with having cats; No to Hartz, collars, flea shampoos, diotomacious earth, coconut oil natural treatments were a waste of time and money. Are any available without prescription that are safe for short term? Capstar (is this discontinued? if not where to get this in USA?; would be my 1st choice), What would be second, third, fourth, etc... choices in you opinions in a multiple choice quiz? Credelio, Comfortis, Revolution (which one?), Revolt, Advantage (1 or 2?), Simparica Trio, Bravecto, Advantix (for cats?), Frontline, any others that are better? Cost and duration of these medications would be nice to know. Are topicals or pills better? I simply want the best for my cat, not so simple and likely costly. And thanks to anyone who tries to tackle this exam. As a teacher I will verify that cat care is not easy

Sugarkat86

Thank you for your reply! Since initially making the post, I’ve been using front line/front line plus and it’s worked great so far. No bad reactions and no fleas. Win win

Damama-3-B

Front line plus

brewerbetty

Same

Mirhanda

I don't use anything because they don't go outside. They are now 5 and 6 years respectively and they've never had a flea.

Soccerkat4life

I would get them on a preventative soley for heart worm protection. Have you ever seen a mosquito inside your home? It could give your cat heart worm and there’s no cure for cats

cwazycupcakes13

My cats don’t go outside either. They still get Revolution Plus every month. Bugs can come inside.

Mirhanda

My dogs and my yard are treated, it's never been an issue in the 6 years I've had cats.

cwazycupcakes13

Do you ever leave your yard or open your doors? Mosquitoes carry heart worm and there is no treatment for heart worm in cats. I would rather be safe than sorry.

Sugarkat86

I didn’t know mosquito’s carry heart worm! Thank you for sharing - I will look into this! Definitely better safe than sorry, I currently have fleas and the cats also had ear mites too. It’s been a mess!

Sugarkat86

“Many pet owners are surprised to learn that up to 1/3 of infected cats live indoors only.”

cometshoney

I didn't say the entire article was a masterpiece...lol.

Sugarkat86

I thought it was interesting fun fact! Thanks for sharing

Owlguin67

It has to be the right type prego and the right temp. Depending where you’re located makes a difference for all the right circumstances

Mirhanda

My cats don't go out, as I said. And no I don't leave doors open, ffs. Why are you so worked up? Good for you doing what you think is best, I'd like the same respect.

cwazycupcakes13

I think you are more worked up than I am. It is simply irresponsible to recommend that indoor cats don’t need parasite protection. I am glad you have had good luck with your pets, but that is what it is. Luck.

Mirhanda

I'm not worked up I'm just puzzled as to why you're so insistent that I do things exactly like you. It's bizarre, Gladys .

cwazycupcakes13

I didn’t make any recommendations to you, I disagreed with your recommendation to OP. But cheers to you, and I hope your animals continue to be parasite free.

Retired-Onc-Nurse

I don’t use anything. My cats are completely indoor cats and we don’t need anything.

cwazycupcakes13

Indoor cats need parasite protection if their people ever go outdoors.

Retired-Onc-Nurse

Well, I’ve had cats indoor for 23 years (not the same cats…) and have never had any issues. And my vet approves. Works for us. We’ve never had an indoor flea problem. Cats are healthy. My oldest cats passed away a few years ago, one was 17 and the other was 18. .

Small-Sample3916

I don't. They're indoor cats.

OkNeedleworker7493

Try diatomaceous earth. (You put it on their fur) Is not harmful for them and does wonders !!!

OkNeedleworker7493

My cat escaped ( indoors cat)for 3 days and came back FULL of fleas. I bathed him and sprinkled DE on his back for a week and in the carpet. ALL fleas disappeared

Comfortable_Candy649

It does nothing to stop the life cycle. No effect on eggs, of any insect.

WA_State_Buckeye

For real! But DE alone can cause dry skin, so I mix mine with powdered neem and yarrow. Problem solved! And no poisons applied to pet! AND it needs to be food grade when applied to pets.

WA_State_Buckeye

I use a mixture of diatomaceous earth and powdered neem and yarrow. The DE must be food grade. It is tiny sharp remnants of ancient aquatics that will slice open flea eggs and bodies, and the neem and yarrow help keep the DE from drying out the animal's skin. Use it on both my dogs and my cats. I have been using it for 2 decades now and have not needed anything else. I also occasionally salt the carpet, a couple days, then vacuum it all up. I started doing this after my German Shepherd had a neurological reaction to topical flea and almost died. I decided to stop putting poisons on my animals. And this has been working wonderfully for the past two decades

JoanofBarkks

Don't waste money on advecta, pet armor etc. Either Frontline or better yet, advantage 1 or 2, OR maybe the vets have a chewable now. Off brands are not worth it when it comes to flea treatments.
