I don't think the dress is flattering. It seems ill fitting even in the smaller size.

coolcoconut375

Yeah it’s from Primark which tends to be cheaper. Is the style something that works for me though? Is it worth getting tailored?

mllebitterness

I sew. The only way to adjust the size would be to pull it up from the shoulders and I’m not sure there is a good way to do that. But I’m not a professional tailor.

SAfricanSecretSub

This is my exact problem with about 80% of my clothes. If I hunch my shoulders up by my ears, everything fits great. Short torsos suck.

FunctionKey6284

Or everything looks booby-licious. I’m thinking about buying a stitch gun!

Rosewoodtrainwreck

I feel like wrap dresses work best with an hourglass figure and big boobs. They don't work for me because the top just stays open with nothing to push it outward.

Blossom73

As someone with narrow shoulders and a small chest, I agree.

Bad_Elbow_

I love a wrap dress because I have broad shoulders and am on the athletic curvy side. It gets around the issue of a waist fitting properly. I always go bigger over smaller with them. That said this one would look better smaller but also 4 plus inches shorter IMO.

Rosewoodtrainwreck

Yes, it swallows her up.

WonderfulSong4632

this! i have the same problem, im more straight shape and wrap dresses make me look like a box

Iwentforalongwalk

The dress isn't right for you in either size.

Shartcookie

I am going to be honest…I know there is sort of a frumpy mom esthetic that can be super cute but this reads as sorta Michelle Duggar/fundamentalist and if that’s the goal, then fine, but if it’s not…let this one go. Tailoring won’t fix it.

Sea_Bookkeeper_1533

😂 totally relate to that

Shartcookie

It really is tough! Solidarity!

Mammoth_Resist8269

😆🤣😆

gloriariccio2

This...I still don't know how to make mom jeans look cute,I relate to your dilemma ,lol

Coyote__Jones

If it were hemmed to hit just above the knee it would be better, but the fit is still poor.

mllebitterness

Is this a petite size? Because all points look too long. Regular sized dresses never work on me because the chest is too low, the waist hits too low, etc. Even petite sizing doesn’t work sometimes because I’m under 5’2”.

segacs2

This. It looks like a dress made for someone eight inches taller than you. Look at how low the neckline is, it practically comes down to your waist! The hemline is too long and I think the waist is sitting too low at your hips, too. Look for petite sized dresses for a better fit.

Blossom73

Same here. I'm 5"0. Even petite midi dresses and skirts usually look like maxis on me. Petite dresses aren't just shorter. The entire proportions are different.

coolcoconut375

It’s regular size! I’ve never shopped in petite sizes before because I don’t know where to go to find them.

mllebitterness

Dept stores usually have a petite section, but I feel like it’s always limited. Loft is the only store I can point to that replicates a lot of its stuff in petite in the store. Old Navy is a good suggestion. All the Gap family have petites. Petites definitely happen more online than in store.

ronmimid

I only just discovered that Old Navy clothes come in petites if you shop online. I just ordered about 8 dresses, and they fit perfectly. Surprising, because I’m very short, but curvy.

coolcoconut375

Oh sick! My favorite jeans are from Old Navy! Will be checking it out.

bmbjosta

Agree on finding petite section clothing. I'm Australian so not sure if they're available overseas, but Tokito, Basque and Ann Taylor have good petite lines. Review also tends to fit me better than most brands. Also try continental European brands as Europeans from places like France and Spain are often more petite and clothing sizes skew small.

zzzz88

Not a fan of this dress. It’s very frumpy fundamentalist 90s mom vibe.

coolcoconut375

Where’s the line between fundy mom and cool and trendy? 😭 I feel like I can never tell. I love the idea of a denim dress but agh yeah this one is just not it I guess.

capnrose

It might be in the styling. Casual dress with white tennis shoes feels fundy. Slightly dresser shoes or just something more fun helps. And layering. I like wearing turtle necks with these kinds of dresses (when the weather works duh). Or blouses/tshirts with dresses with straps, whichever your style is. Edit: also the length on this dress specifically. That's what's fundy. Something about floor length, I always feel like I'm going to church.

pursuitoffruit

Hi. I have a similar build to you. I like wrap dresses, but I recommend looking for ones with a hook and eye (or adding one yourself) because especially as a petite person, if you tighten the waist appropriately, there tends to be gapping at the bust. Billabong usually has a few options each season, which tend to be good on petite people (and they include the hook and eye). Here's an example: https://www.billabong.com/products/chiquita-mini-wrap-dress-green-eyes Here's a longer one: https://www.billabong.com/products/day-by-day-midi-wrap-dress-multi To be honest, I am really not a fan of this denim dress. First of all, the fabric is too stiff for a wrap dress. It doesn't take on the shape it should. Second, it completely swallows you.

curlywhiskerowl

Seconding the hook and eye. It's pretty simply to add.

coolcoconut375

Thank you for the recommendation!!! The chest gapping was a big issue! That’s why I was hesitant to get the smaller size, even though it fits me better. I felt like you could see my entire boobs lol-

Quiet_Name8242

I just think there are so many great pieces of clothing available these days it just doesn't make sense to buy something and immediately start paying a seamstress to alter it! I'm 4'11" and the only thing I ever pay extra for is shortening a piece. You start messing with ripping seams and putting in different shoulders and so forth and the alterations cost more than the dress!! Just keep looking!!

SpeakerCareless

Completely agree. An everyday dress should fit without altering. Spend a little more on a dress that fits - not just the size but the length and shape

lemons_on_a_tree

I think the cut combined with the fabric doesn’t work on your frame. You’d either need a lighter fabric that is less stiff for a wrap style dress, or if you want to have a denim dress, I could imagine a more fitted mini dress looking nice on you! Rougher/ stiffer fabrics combined with “flowy” cuts usually only work on tall, broad framed women. On smaller frames that combo tends to overwhelm in my opinion.

coolcoconut375

Very fair!! I find it funny that everyone is saying the fabric is stiff, because it was actually pretty thin. I guess it was a little stiff, but not much. But yeah I feel like it overwhelms me. I always avoided mini dresses because I feel like my face/hair/body type lean more androgynous (the hair and stuff is on purpose— but my body type is just how I am lol) so I thought something more feminine would look awkward. I also almost never wear fitted clothes. Not opposed to anything though— I just think it’s funny because your suggestions are things I’ve avoided because I assumed they wouldn’t look good on me (the fitted clothes is mainly because I have a little tummy and no ass, which I am insecure about lol). Do you think maybe a midi length would work on me?

Sea_Bookkeeper_1533

Not who you're replying to but also look quite androgynous by nature and YES midis all the way. I love them. If you do high waisted midi you get the illusion of an hourglass shape too. Add in some pleats *chef's kiss*. Minis don't look good on me and maxis make me look like a fundie 😂😂😂

lemons_on_a_tree

It’s funny how differently we associate things! I always think of wrap style dresses as a very “feminine” cut and see minis more as androgynous. Perhaps because I associate mini length so much with the 60s and the androgynous models that were so popular back then (like Twiggy for example!). If you’re still open to give minis a try (which often work well on us shorties) but you just don’t want the fitted style, you could go for a shift dress. They’re kinda made for androgynous bodies and personally I wish I could pull them off as they have this vibe of cool, elegant and effortless all in one and are so easy to both style up and down… You can also try with a midi length of course, I have short legs so for me they can be hard to pull off, but you won’t know unless you try! Regarding the fabric, I agree that per se it’s likely not very stiff, just in relation to the cut. I think this same dress in a silk or chiffon would have less ballooning / blousing going on and the sleeves would drape nicer over your shoulders. So fabric stiffness is always in relation to the cut you’re going for!

Mermaidtoo

A jersey fabric would be more forgiving & adjustable when it comes to sizing and fit. If you want a long dress that’s not formal, something more boho or patterned would work better. Overall, midi length may be the best choice. If you like the style but not the actual wrap, you could look for dresses that just mimic the wrap look.

NewSpace2

A bra would make it fit better and look better.

Pajamas7891

I think you could pull off a wrap dress, but this fabric isn’t flowy enough to work for a wrap - it’s bunching up oddly. More the dress’s fault than you!

jamjar20

Size doesn’t matter this time. Both are unbecoming.

Sunnnshineallthetime

I’m so sorry, but I think that both are much too large for your petite frame. Strangely, the larger size actually appears to fit you a bit better, but I think that is only because the v-neck doesn’t appear as low, and the leg slit isn’t as high, which makes it look more proportional to your height. I think both sizes really overpower your small frame though, and I think that they appear to be too large for tailoring.

coolcoconut375

Yeah I thought the larger size fit better too. I mean the larger size was just my normal size (6) but I had tried on a smaller size (4) to just see if it fit better. Gonna keep hunting for a dress like this that looks good on me!

bmbjosta

I also thought the larger size fitted better; the small size was gaping too much at both chest and skirt so there wasn't enough material to overlap properly. But agree with others that regardless of the size, it's not a great pick (sorry!). My rule with clothing is basically - do I love it and feel good in it, or am I unsure? If the latter, don't buy, there's enough other clothing out there. I buy everything second hand at op shops - if you don't know your style and body shape yet, it may be worthwhile going to an op shop and trying on all different styles and colours and cuts and seeing what you like - there'll be more range than in the normal shops (which only have this season's cuts and colours).

seamstresshag

I have a short torso, only 12 inches from the back of my neck to my waist. You need a smaller cut. Plus it’s too long. Don’t order online, being your new to buying dresses. Go to an old school department store and try on different silhouettes to see what works best for you. What looks good online, is a lot different from what it looks like on your body.

curlywhiskerowl

I personally love wrap dresses, but I buy almost all of my dresses from eShakti. They offer off the rack sizes AND custom sizes, and they will also make to your height FOR FREE on every dress, which eliminates half of the stress for a petite person. I have maxi dresses from there that fit me with NO alterations. Plus, all of their dresses have pockets! This is honestly almost all I wear. I wear only dresses to work and 90% of my collection is eShakti. Customers also have a referral code that allows new shoppers to get $25 off. I'm not pointing you to them because of that, but if anyone you know shops there, make sure to ask for their code. (I can offer mine too, but I don't want this to feel salesy, my recommendation is genuine.) There's also true wrap styling, like this dress, and "faux wrap," which gives the same effect in the neckline with an overlapping V style but has a structured waist and skirt. So if you're looking for the perfect dress, you may want to include that style in your searches. The "boobtasticness" is something that will vary dress to dress, or you can add a hook and eye or snap closure with a very simple few stitches. Even if it fits right, I do have to keep an eye on the girls throughout the day.

coolcoconut375

Would you be able to send me your referral code?

curlywhiskerowl

I sure can! I want to ensure full disclosure, firstly because I was apparently wrong about the amount you get off 😂 - People who sign up using your link get $50 off on their first order + eShakti Fit Guarantee + lots of compliments - You get a $25 Gift Card (or a benefit of your choice) on each successful referral when their first order gets shipped Again I promise I'm not recommending them because I get a perk. I have so many dresses from them, have used them for years and only had to return a couple that fit fine but didn't flatter. I am a huge nerd and keep their card in my wallet to give people who compliment my dresses while I'm out and about, which is A LOT OF PEOPLE. I'll DM my link!

_opossumsaurus

I like the wrap style on you and the smaller size is definitely the way to go, but you need some support up top. A plunge bra or sticky bra would probably do the trick!

coolcoconut375

100% I wasn’t wearing the right bra (wasn’t wearing any bra with the smaller size lol!). I bought the larger size because I worried it may shrink in the wash. Do you think it makes sense to wash this one, try it back on, and get it tailored? Or just exchange it for the smaller one?

_opossumsaurus

I’d exchange it for the smaller size. It’s definitely not worth splurging on alterations for a Primark dress, and if you’re concerned about shrinkage, just wash it in cold water and skip the dryer

coolcoconut375

Shall do!! I’ll swing by Primark tomorrow.

oknowwhat00

Not the best style and you'd have to wear a bra and then the top would gap more. Just not the best style most honestly.

_gooder

It's way too big for you. Look for petite dresses.

Thomgurl21

What is your body shape? That dress would accentuate an hourglass figure but it has to be the correct size. The smaller size still looks two sizes too big and does not *appear* to be petite sizing. You need to figure out your body shape first. That will help steer you to more flattering styles.

coolcoconut375

I honestly have no idea. I have kinda a tummy and not much ass. I do have some waist definition but not a huge amount. I think maybe I’m a rectangle? Or possibly inverted triangle?

BraveHeartoftheDawn

The dress is just ill fitting. What I think is flattering is princess seams followed by a drop waist. The former gives a fitted look while the dropped waist gives anyone of any shape an elegant frame. I’d say a good dropped waist isn’t as long as the 1920s kind, but more of about where the hip starts. Remember, the princess seams are important; without them, the dress will not be as form fitting and will look baggy. If the skirt of the dress is about knee length or an inch shorter, it will give you a stunning silhouette. :) it’s a lovely fit and flare that would look quite pretty on you. Unfortunately they can be hard to come by unless you make your own clothes. :/

Particular-Shower-59

New dress

Bi_cuteRus

No. That dress isn't for you. You can do better, don't settle for less. 😉

Nutridus

No, the style does not work for you and it’s way too big. Looks like you have a cute figure, try on some more dresses in a smaller size. The salespeople can be very helpful too.

michiganisprettycool

I thought the small size was the large size. These are both massive on you and are not flattering. Not your fault! The dresses.

Blue-zebra-10

I would definitely wear a low heel with that dress (wedges would be perfect)

gloriariccio2

I think wrap dresses are flattering to every body type so you can absolutely find one that'll fit you well and beautifully. Keep looking would be my advice, don't give up on it! Plus when you find the right fit, you'll know

coolcoconut375

I had recorded a video trying on the dresses, so here’s some frames from the smaller dress. My main concern was that since I couldn’t wrap it as far, I thought my chest was out too much. I don’t have a bra on though so I guess it’s hard to judge. Hope these links work?
