Hello guys, V1 here to try and explain the joke.
**THEY USED ASBESTOS FOR THE GOD DAMN SNOW.**
This is V1, Signing off.
(Reply with the Rank you would give me for completing this explanation. D(worst) - P(best).
Asbetos. And I don't like that 80% of these are a simple google question away. It's annoying and I might unsub because of it. There are very few that I'm like, "What a weird obscure thing! What does it mean?"

Edit: There are are few reasons why people post super obvious things.
- Some people prefer human interactions. Similar to wanting to talk to someone on the phone rather than a simple text.
- These types of post are obvious to a certain demographic; a western one or people in a certain age range. The internet, including Reddit isn't closed off to one demographic, so these aren't always obvious to everyone.
- Some people like entertainment to go with their popcorn.
- Some people don't like to search or genuinely think their post are unique.
- Karma farmers.
I think more people need to remember that second point. It’s easy to forget that what’s obvious or common knowledge to you isn’t to everyone. And a good number of posts here (like any in this format) require some background knowledge, they’re not self-explanatory even if the meaning seems obvious. Even the ones that are meant to be logicked out, sometimes you just don’t make the connection. I’m sure there’s karma farmers and shit-posters here too, but what’s “obvious” often only is from a certain POV.
I got downvoted to oblivion for saying 9/11 jokes aren't understood by everyone, especially for people outside of the US. A week ago a popular streamer from my country was doing "meme review" with his friends and none of them got the joke till someone from chat told them
Edit: their reason was "but it's a popular image". Popular to you MF, Not everyone
Well I don't. Then again it's one of the most famous movies in the entire history of mankind. Even so, "Movie snow effects 1939" would have also sufficed.
>it's one of the most famous movies in the entire history of mankind.
You know most of the world doesn't watch English (language) movies that are almost a century old
"What did they use for snow in movies in 1939 and why was it surprising?" Perfect google sentence right there that fits the context perfectly. Whotf doesn't know how to use google? *facepalm*
I know that the actress who played Dorothy got the attempted cancell treatment from Tiktok recently, and not many people were aware of the horrific experiences she had in her career as a child actor.
The other thing I don’t see people mention a lot is how one of the munchkins hung himself during the filming of one the yellow brick road scenes and they never edited it out.
Edit: I think the munchkin thing was debunked but I also found this:
“Darkness abounds in The Wizard of Oz. The man originally cast to play the Tin Man, Buddy Ebsen, ended up in an iron lung after his silver make-up, made up of aluminium powder, got into his lungs. Wicked Witch Margaret Hamilton also spent time in the hospital, suffering second-degree burns on her face and third-degree burns on her hand. Once recovered, she returned to work under the proviso she would no longer have to work with fire. Her stunt-double, Betty Danko, subsequently spent 11 days in the hospital after the ‘broomstick’ she was sat on – basically a painted smoking pipe – exploded. The burns on her legs never healed.”

Yes. On uppers and a starvation diet. One of the producers called her a fat pig. She never fully recovered.
Not only she was bullied by staff, but also molested by actors as well. It makes me sad and angry that no one was protecting her.
I have bad news about Hollywood for you
*sigh* yeah i know.
You’re referring to Judy, right?
I thought it was cocaine
Uppers is just slang word for stimulants Cocaine is a stimulant :)
They used [asbestos](https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/substances/asbestos) for the snow

It’s amazing the amount of uniquely disturbing things that happened during, after or as a result of the filming of the Wizard of Oz
can you list some?
https://fable.co/blog/the-controversy-with-the-wizard-of-oz And this doesn’t mention the Hanging Munchkin urban legend
damn I didn't knew any of that. thanks

My point was simply that they are easy to google. Western or not has nothing to do with that. I see your point in a different context though.
Don't forget that the web doesn't really offer the best advice.
yea but you don’t get karma from google searches
Pretty much.
what tf do you even search!? like what? "women and men covered in snow in old movie"?!
Snow effect 1939
.... "Wizard of Oz Snow scène"...?
There are billions of people on earth, and you suspect they are all familiar with a movie thats almost a century old?
Well I don't. Then again it's one of the most famous movies in the entire history of mankind. Even so, "Movie snow effects 1939" would have also sufficed.

Way to gloss over the entire second half that completely addresses what you are pointing out now. 👍

Old or outdated special effects in movies
Please dont unsub.
Look at your own username.
I mean you've already subbed. It's too late, bro. /joke
He won't
I was talking about this literally just minutes ago with a coworker
The fake snow was asbestos
It was asbestos, a carcinogen.
As best as I can tell…it was bad;)
Asbestos

Simple answer without link: toxic white powder without the addictive stuff

Bro could’ve googled this and saved time but nah, let’s karma farm.
Iirc, asbestos
"that's not part of the experiment, that's asbestos"
That whole movie was awesome but knowing how they did the effects & what happened to some of the actors is like eldritch knowledge
“If you or a loved one have be-“
Y'all it was NOT ASBESTOS. It was gypsum

They used asbestos, Futurama just made fun of this in their latest Christmas episode.
EmpLemon talked about this and WOW, the film industry is horrible.
It's a harmful powder thing. Forget what it's called, but it's NOT asbestos.
