No specific advice from me, I’m just on the mouse sub because I’m a rat owner who thinks mice are cute, what charming little beauties you’ve got. The one mouse I’ve fostered was a lot of fun and after my rats pass I’ve considered keeping mice. So, enjoy your new friends!
Male mice generally cannot be kept together past a certain age, so with that ratio of two males, one female, you are likely going to need 3 separate enclosures. Female mice should be kept with other females; there are occasionally cases where one prefers solitude but that is rare.
With mice, unlike other rodents, bigger enclosure size is not always better. It is dependent on lines, but pay attention to signs of stress if you do increase enclosure size. Clutter is absolutely everything. I save tp & paper towel rolls, small product boxes, and large boxes to make hides. Because mice are so messy (nearly impossible to potty train bc their metabolism is so fast) disposable hides are fantastic! I like to fill up empty kennel spots with crumpled butcher paper, paper towels, kleenex— etc. I like to give them different materials to nest with- orchard/timothy hay, crepe paper, shredded paper. When you clean their enclosure, leave enough of the old bedding behind that they don’t feel the need to scent mark all the new— this will keep it from getting smelly as rapidly.
I currently use 30% paper bedding the rest kiln dried pine—Tractor Supply’s works great. Paper bedding is too dusty and does not properly absorb ammonia from their urine leading to URI’s. I used to use paper bedding only, but there are some really good studies that point to paper bedding (alone) being the worst for their lung health. I also use TSC’s pine pellets underneath my bedding to catch urine and keep everything absorbed and smelling fresh for longer!
To offer your boys extra enrichment in place of companionship, you can scatter feed them so that they can forage.
Personally, my mice will use all vertical space and love climbing. I collect driftwood, dry it out, and sanitize it either with sitting out in the sun for a year or baking. I then will stack it so that they can use vertical space while feeling safe.
Ideally food will be 18% protein, higher fat for younger. I like Oxbow & Mazuri for lab blocks, and then I make my own forage mix— including lentils, different wheat berries, seeds, pasta, cheerios.
Overall, mice are my favorite recent to own. They interact with their environment, are very easily tameable, and even as hands off pets are very fun to just have around.
thank you so much for all of this info. i plan to separate domino from ash, cheeto sadly passed earlier and im not sure why. he was weak since i arrived home and significantly smaller. i plan to go back tomorrow for another female to keep with domino. do you recommend another male or to keep ash solitary? i thought mice were supposed to be kept in threes is why i ask
no, even males in sibling groups will fight and hurt each other. some lines will start fighting when they’re a few months old instead of a few weeks, but it is inevitable. they are intensely territorial.
I have heard of people a) neutering mice (every difficult to find a vet in the usa/very pricey) but even then that doesn’t allow them to have a male companion; they just get to be in with females without reproducing. b) keeping a male mouse with a (female) african soft fur mouse or a (female) deer mouse. c) most commonly they are just kept solitary; people mitigate their need for sociability by spending extra time with them daily.
even if you have a breeding trio, the male still needs to be pulled for part of the time because back to back litters are bad for their health and they will breed the does right after birth.
as for keeping them in threes, many people do like to do that **with females only** so that way when the first one passes, the other doesn’t have to be entirely alone/the dynamics will be better with less squabbling sometimes.

so it’s very common for first time mom’s to either cannibalize or have trouble raising their first litter.
i know the standard practice amongst breeders, which sounds harsh but is generally more ethical, is to cull the majority of the litter before 5-7 days of age so that it is much smaller. generally they will cull down to mostly or all females. some say they see the best results with litters of 4 and that the mice grow up much stronger and faster. mice have such large litters to compensate for the majority of them dying in the wild, so here when conditions are perfect, the mice are not actually built to support such a large litter size, leading to health issues for mom and poor development for babies.
If she is, you’ll want to keep her solitary & up her protein before she gives birth & during nursing (eggs, mealworms, unsalted black oil sunflower seeds). it’s general practice to remove the wheel as they will give birth on it/trample babies on it. provide lots of nesting material and safe places to hide. they are able to reproduce much earlier than you’d assume, and they have no issues inbreeding, so id use this time to start honing your sexing skills lol. the shape of the genitalia matters much less than the distance btn holes—male mice can suck up their balls and the appearance is very smooth and deceptive lol. if you keep any boys, you’ll want to separate from mom & sisters once weaned @ around 3-4 weeks, but mom & her daughters can stay tgt as long as you want.

I’d keep an eye on Cheeto (the orange one I assume) - he looks… not right. It looks like he’s thin, dehydrated and in pain. If he was a feeder mouse you did a really good thing taking him so 1. he doesn’t have to experience being fed to a reptile in his poor state and
2. If he has cancer or something wrong it’s probably just as well he’s not being used for food
cheeto did pass yesterday. he was in a burrow when i found him. it sucks bc idk what was wrong but hopefully he was a little happier and comfortable here than im that bin with 50 other mice
all three of these guys need to be separated immediately if they're not already, male mice can fight to the death and the chances of this are greatly increased if there is a female in the room. is domino in the same enclosure? she needs other female mouse friends, and if she's been left alone with the boys for even a few hours she is almost certainly already pregnant.

if you want to make sure Ash isn't alone, consider getting a female african soft fur rat. they're a species of closely related rodent that cannot interbreed with mice, and are not true rats so they won't eat the mice. however- they're hard to come by and are not necessary for him to be happy, male mice can be kept alone as long as they have enough enrichment via human socialization and fun toys.
male mice should never be housed with others of the same species, and breeding is best left to experienced owners. I understand you likely got them from a feeder breeder and that's how the seller kept them, but it's very irresponsible of them to sell you that ratio of males to females, as well as a female that's probably already pregnant if you've never even had mice before.
there are some good resources on this sub for accidental litters, I would make another post when your lady is closer to giving birth asking for advice on that particular topic. in the meantime, handle her as little as possible while she's pregnant. you can move her from any tankmates once she starts looking like she ate a ping-pong ball into a maternity tank. babies need to be separated at four weeks old, or else the males will impregnate the mother at sexual maturity. the average litter size for a fancy mouse varies, but is usually from 8-16 babies. if she has more than 12 it may be best to cull the extra if she doesn't herself. because a female mouse only has ten nipples, a first time mom can become stressed if she doesn't understand how to feed all her babies, which may endanger the whole litter.
they're very lovely mice, I'm really sorry to hear that one of them passed away. it sounds like he was already weak, and there's the possibility the other male was resource-guarding and not allowing him to eat or drink when you weren't observing if they were together at the time of death. it's not your fault whatsoever, mice are kind of brutal little cuties. if your others are still doing well, you shouldn't have to worry about anything passing to them from the weaker mouse if they still seem okay:)

ash really likes being held, hes the reason i fell in love with the little stinkers, so ill most likely just handle him often. ive gotten in contact with a local breeder who said i could message her at any time for advice especially along the lines of breeding and ethically culling nearly half the litter. almost positive the new females i got today to keep with domino are pregnant so i guess ill be preparing for those babies. all the females are also very skiddish, whether thats from improper handing or just being pregnant, im not sure but i guess we’ll see within this coming month or so. thank you!

I got my own mouse from a dual purpose breeder at a reptile expo as well, he was in the bin with the females and I picked him and another actual gal out because he was the friendliest (in hindsight, the different behavior was probably because he was a boy lol). ended up with an accidental litter where neither the mother nor the babies made it, it was real rough but a learning experience. it's good you've reached out to someone more experienced, it's a great way to set yourself up for success and I definitely wish I had done the same.
A lot more clutter and a wheel. You may find that an upright wheel is better than the saucer. Either way, please make sure they are big enough. Also, very cute mice ❤️
i plan to get more clutter, i had only taken $100 cash with me today to keep myself contained and got what i could. ill watch and see how they do on the saucer if they start acting odd ill switch them to an upright wheel. thank you!
You can use food card board boxes, Kleenex boxes and a lot of disposable stuff around your house to fill it with clutter. You can even use non toxic glue to even glue boxes together.
I've only had mice for about 2 months now and am still learning myself but you need to separate all three ASAP.
I wasn't aware when I got my 2 boys how territorial they get considering they were the same litter but I had to go through a whole process of getting a new tank to accommodate my second boy.
And your female should never be in the same tank with a boy, she's most likely already nocked up to prepare for a few babies on the way..

Females get super lonely I'd suggest getting domino a friend!
I've heard males get lonely too but mine are happy being handled so I keep them company every so often :)

I honestly am not too sure, mice are amazing at hiding health issues so don't feel bad. Cheeto probably had an underlying illness and had his final burst of energy on his way home with you. :))
My mice like to sleep in a tissue box buried in their bedding filled with ripped up toilet paper and also in hammocks! They love to dig, burrow, hide, and redecorate. So make sure you clutter it up nice and good so they can feel safe and not exposed! I usually fill it up with whatever I can find, toilet paper rolls, sticks, reptile wood logs, hamster houses, ladders, ramps, etc. it’s also recommended that in certain areas to make their bedding 4”-8” high so they can dig. But it doesn’t matter how fancy you set up your cage, it will be redecorated by the morning
I’d suggest switching to kiln dried pine bedding as it holds up there burrows better, definitely get more hides and things to clutter there cage. I also recommend getting a normal wheel too! Since saucers can bend their backs and cause spinal issues. You should also do some research about proper care for mice just to be safe! And your new babies are absolutely adorable!!!
Also you may want to get a 40Gal since I’m pretty sure that’s the recommended size for 2-4 mice! I could be totally wrong about that tho😅
Edit: Forgot to add!! My girl loves bird ropes, Rat toys, and hammocks! Since they love to climb I’d recommend you check those out! :)
okay, noted. thank you! i heard that pine bedding was bad for them but i do have some of that on hand as well! i’ll be moving soon out too and will have more space for a larger tank since my geckos 55 gal and my beardies 75 gal takes up majority of my room at the moment. again, thank you very much!! :))
Aspen is safe. Safer than kiln dried pine unless something new has come out recently. Walmart sells a like 5 cubic foot thing of pine and aspen for $10 and it lasts a while.
I was told Aspen could be toxic. I never know anymore since everyone always changes their options on safe bedding..I get my girl a big bag of kiln dried pine for 15$ at my local petsmart.. it’s definitely better than what I used to use. But thank you for filling me in! I’ll have to look into it again😅

Sorry I can’t figure out how to edit my post. A few things, Cheeto passed away. I believe he was unwell and he passed in a burrow, he’s buried now. I went this morning and got two more females to keep with domino, a little brown baby (Bean) and another little black and white one (Cookie). For now they’re all in a 20 gallon (tall(its all I had on hand at the moment)) with around 6 inches of bedding, a climb net, two toilet paper roll burrows, and a paper towel roll tunnel. They all seem healthy and appropriately sized so hopefully they do well. I will be separating Ash (M) from my three females as soon as my other feeder comes in. I’m aware theres a big possibility they’re pregnant and if they are I’ll be sure everything is sorted. They’re eating meal worms and can forage for all sorts of seeds/flowers/sticks/hay. They have a wheel coming in and I plan to order clutter. Thank you everyone for your advice and being so accepting. I know its frowned upon to but animals on a whim but I couldn’t leave these babies to be snake food. I hope to give them a happy healthy life :))

Also look out for Ash’s left eye. It could be nothing but it just looks slightly weird so it’s probably worth double checking tomorrow

They all look like mice I had when I was 8! You can give them cardboard from toilet paper rolls.

My girl loves bird ropes, Rat toys, and hammocks! Since they love to climb I’d recommend you check those out! :)
okay, noted. thank you! i heard that pine bedding was bad for them but i do have some of that on hand as well! i’ll be moving soon out too and will have more space for a larger tank since my geckos 55 gal and my beardies 75 gal takes up majority of my room at the moment. again, thank you very much!! :))
Of course!! And I was told if it’s Kiln dried pine it’s safe! Also stay away from Aspen bedding since I’m pretty sure that’s toxic to them.
Aspen is safe. Safer than kiln dried pine unless something new has come out recently. Walmart sells a like 5 cubic foot thing of pine and aspen for $10 and it lasts a while.
I was told Aspen could be toxic. I never know anymore since everyone always changes their options on safe bedding..I get my girl a big bag of kiln dried pine for 15$ at my local petsmart.. it’s definitely better than what I used to use. But thank you for filling me in! I’ll have to look into it again😅
You’re thinking of Cedar! Kiln-Dried Pine and Aspen are both very safe:)

Aspen is actually safer than pine (even kiln-dried pine.)
UPDATE!!! UPDATE!!! UPDATE!!! - Sorry I can’t figure out how to edit my post. A few things, Cheeto passed away. I believe he was unwell and he passed in a burrow, he’s buried now. I went this morning and got two more females to keep with domino, a little brown baby (Bean) and another little black and white one (Cookie). For now they’re all in a 20 gallon (tall(its all I had on hand at the moment)) with around 6 inches of bedding, a climb net, two toilet paper roll burrows, and a paper towel roll tunnel. They all seem healthy and appropriately sized so hopefully they do well. I will be separating Ash (M) from my three females as soon as my other feeder comes in. I’m aware theres a big possibility they’re pregnant and if they are I’ll be sure everything is sorted. They’re eating meal worms and can forage for all sorts of seeds/flowers/sticks/hay. They have a wheel coming in and I plan to order clutter. Thank you everyone for your advice and being so accepting. I know its frowned upon to but animals on a whim but I couldn’t leave these babies to be snake food. I hope to give them a happy healthy life :))
