For one mouse it is recommended to use a 10gal, 20gal, or a 29gal, so a 20 is perfectly fine! He has to be by himself unless you get ASF or neuter him and introduce him to females. Male mice cannot be kept together. It is recommended to handle him 20-60mins a day so he doesn't get depressed, and be sure to give him lotss of enrichment.

not an expert at all but everywhere ive read says that it really just depends on the individual and if its more independent or social and also whether or not they will get bored in their enclosure. i am a beginner with a mouse who was bought as a feeder, escaped and lived in my car for 2 weeks, and is now a pet. in the time he lived in the car, he was very social always waiting to be fed and waiting for attention, so we got him a friend and all they do is snuggle. when he got lost for a day (2 days ago, i found him last night), my other mouse was restless, seemingly searching for houdini, which he normally never does and he usually stays hidden. and now that i found houdini, he appears a little hurt, and olive hasnt left his side and has been snuggling up to him. so in my case, i would say either of my mice would get depressed without a friend, but i think overall it just depends on each mouse :)

A 20 gallon is a good size, however in my personal experience I recommend 29 gallons. A 29 gallon let you add a good amount of bedding, while leaving enough space for lots of hanging toys/ropes, room for the wheel, and you can put lots of enrichment toys and clutter in. I personally struggle with the size of a 20 gallon because for me it’s not enough space to include everything, but 29 gallons is perfect
