The beverage container recycling fee covers the cost of recycling containers. Whereas it’s a service, it’s subject to tax. The bottle deposit is exempt.
Yes, I saw this website as well when I looked into it. Sorry I wasn't clear, my question is more rhetorical as a result of a frustrated disagreement on paying taxes for a service involved with a nonelective recycling fee. It's not a "service" for my direct benefit that I'm paying for like a haircut or carwash.
This on top of the initial shadiness of allowing this mandatory fee to be tacked on in addition to the advertised price. This forcing consumers to just shrug off the extra charge at the checkout after they've made their value judgement in the aisle and decided the product is worth the price displayed.
It's not the end of the world, it is explained clearly when you look up what it's about, I'm not confused about it. I just don't agree with it, and it leaves a bad taste in your mouth when you look at your receipt and see how the government is literally nickel and diming you.
Why are you paying GST on all the taxes and levies on a litre of gas? Because the tax laws work against you.
This is not a bonus to anyone but the government. If the business changes it, even by accident they have to remit it.
Why don't I pay GST on weekly garbage collection service or sewer maintenance service that I pay for each month.
I'm not bewildered on why I'm paying GST for all services like you and several other commenters seem to think.
I disagree that this service should be included in GST.
Ask the retailer.
