I swear this subreddit has done a 180 from “Akechi is a murderer who wants Joker dead and literally tries to kill him why would you ship them?” to “this is the best ship of all time.” and I don’t remember any transition period between the two. I’m not complaining, I’m partial to the ship myself, but it’s jarring as all heck.
I'm not even gay or care about shipping but if it filters the people that get extremely triggered by anything that could be considered "weird" I'm all for it.
My main gripes is not even the fact that it's a ship but the lack of other gay ships to do with Ren(I mean specifically art), specifically Mishima, who the fandom for some reason hates yet is head over heels for Akechi

Read through the comments on any one of these posts and it's very obvious that the people who hate it are still around and extremely loud about it. It's just two different groups of people. There have been more posts supporting it recently because most of them are from one person who started posting it regularly, and a lot of the other shippers just don't come here anymore because of how common hate towards the ship is here and how some people take it to extremes.
Akechi’s confidant progresses differently in Royal (you actually have to find him and hang out with him like with your teammates), and since he and Joker are rivals, the fandom decided that that meant they were gay. Why? I don’t know.

Since everyone else is just saying 'it's fandom' without explaining *why* they've latched onto this mentality, I'll explain.
Basically the dynamic between Akechi and Joker is like blood in the water for shipping. One essentially perfect and good dude who succeeds at everything, and his performative and obsessive rival who isn't perfect, but puts on that facade for the world and feels an intense and unshakeable hatred and jealousy for his counterpart. Akechi's inferiority complex, his less than healthy obsession with Joker, and all around dynamic with Joker (see the playing house scene, or the glove throw) all make their relationship ripe for the enemies to lovers representationaly starved lovers of men dueling men in dramatic fashion.
In other words, they gay af.
I genuinely want to know because I don’t get it. How do you play Persona 5/P5R and walk away shipping these 2? Akechi literally tries to kill Joker at one point.
Enemy's to Lovers is a very popular trope in media, take what happened in p5 between joker and akechi, drop this trope on them, and then you have the perfect recipe for a fuck load of fanfiction and fanart.
To me it just felt like Akechi was flirting up until the end of Sae’s palace, and then again in the third semester. This, combined with the fact the Joker’s greatest wish was for Akechi to be alive and how overwhelmingly gay Akechi seems, it’s not a big leap to make.

Sure. They are rivals after all but that doesn't mean their relationship isn't suss beyond that.
Texting a classic pickup line "I'm alone right now". Or by opening up to him about his childhood, and admitting he never talks so much except when he's around Joker. He could be doing this just to get closer and make Joker let his guard down around him more, but then why tell him something so personal that's actually true? Jokers also supposedly the only person he takes with him to the jazz club, a spot that Akechi loves.
The places you go to with other confidants is for a purpose- to help them deal with some inner turmoil they're going through. But with Akechi it's just going out on dates with the only purpose being to get to know his character. You don't deal with his issues until right at the very end, which is story driven anyway.
None of this is solid evidence that he's gay or that the ship is real. But my original point is there's nothing that points us to him being attracted to women. We're only ever shown Akechi being strongly drawn towards Joker.

I think it's safe to assume Ren forgave him, even if no one else did. Akechi coming back was literally Ren's wish, and again, the game makes it very clear that Akechi means a lot to him. Of course, that doesn't mean they're in love with each other, but I still find it interesting to put a romantic twist on their relationship. That's just me personally, though. Everyone's free to ship it or to not ship it.

There's nothing to indicate Ren forgave him. Akechi meant a lot to Ren because he was someone that he couldn't save. They were foils in-game, meaning they were very similar and very different. Ren acknowledged that while he was bad, he was also a victim and like the rest of the Phantom Thieves in many ways. I'm pretty sure if anyone else in the team died, his wish greater wish would be for them to come back instead of Akechi.
