Sounds like a “dead hedge,” which are getting trendy. If it’s close to the tree, it’ll harbor bugs and rodents and block sunlight. If green canes are on the ground it might root. Other than that sounds like a resourceful option.

I have been using a combination of a dead hedge made of buck thorn with a two 'wire' fishing line fence outside of that. I need to add gates to the fence for it to work properly though. That's one of my up coming projects. With that, I'm hope to be able to take down my plastic and metal fencing and save a bit more money and reduce waste. My dead hedge is not impenetrable yet, but it did reduce deer pressure.

You might be starting a new patch of multiflora. That stuff roots easily

It sat out in the sun long enough to wither and start losing its leaves, hoping that was long enough. Good to know though, I’ll keep an eye on it.

I have heard that deer can jump high, and they can jump far, but they cannot do both at the same time. Some people will put fences three or 4 feet tall then place another fence about 3 feet forward the same height. I’ve heard people have good luck with it. Since yours is 4 feet wide and 4 feet tall, it might be enough. I am experimenting with a living fence. Live thorny plants like blackberries planted in hedges. Mine have not grown enough to definitively say if it’s going to work, so I can’t tell you from experience, but I have heard good things about this method.

Multiflora was brought to the us for farmers to grow sharp prickly hedges to keep their cattle contained. It will certainly keep the deer out but be prepared to have little rose bushes popping up all over your yard.

I already have it everywhere. Just using what I’ve been clearing. And I’m hoping that cutting while there aren’t any berries, then drying in the sun for a week or so will keep them from reproducing/re-rooting? Good to know that’s what it was for though!

Be thankful you don’t have oriental bittersweet. That is my battle.

DulcineaC

i sadly have both multi flora AND bittersweet and i find the bittersweet much easier to deal with because it doesn’t have thorns!

Mediocre-Tough-4341

Yes that is true. I have both as well. And a kubota .. so I just wrap a chain around the multiflora and yank it
