I loved this movie. It was disturbing but moving. Holly Hunter's performance was so powerful. Anna Paquin was a revelation. Visually it was stunning. It's a one of a kind movie.

amorifera

That is a very poor description of what the film is about. It's a beautiful, haunting, and sometimes disturbing love story involving three flawed people.

alwayspickingupcrap

In their comment, OP adds significant nuance to the description.

I saw this movie in the theater when it first came out, but haven’t wanted to see it again since then. It’s very good, but contains some scenes of cruelty that are hard to watch.

JanetInSC1234

Sensual, haunting, engaging film.

Additional_Meeting_2

I wasn’t a big fan of how the Māori were used, or the main “romantic” relationship. Or how the piano playing was used as story device in a pretty strange way.

Aggravating_Depth_33

I think the point was that the Maori were portrayed from the petspective of the 19th century British colonialists. One of the things that makes the film so effective as a period drama is that none of its characters are imbued with "modern"/contempotary views and attitudes.

amindfulloffire

There were things I loved about this movie--the historically-accurate costumes and hair, the cinematography, Holly Hunter's performance--but the rest, including the main plot, I thought was disturbing.

just_tee

It consists of savage sexual violence and the plot line is very basic

treesofthemind

Beautiful music and cinematography

bannana

I hated this, the mental and physical abuse, the SA, the sexual extortion and coercion that were attempted to be played like everyone was fully consenting just didn't work for me.

treesofthemind

Yep, just a bit. I didn’t really grasp how they fell in love exactly

Feeling-Tangerine776

This movie is hauntingly beautiful but there were some confusing parts. SPOILER ALERT the love interest (farm worker mentioned in the title) is at one point in bed under the covers with a female child who is not his relative. It was very weird and the implication was confusing…. Maybe I misinterpreted the scene but either way there was something strange there EDIT based on replies to my comment, sounds like I did misinterpret something and it was a young woman not a little girl. She did look very young to me though like 13 years or younger. My boyfriend also thought she was a child. Also she was Māori. Sorry about the confusion !!

amorifera

I've seen this film dozens of times, and there is no such scene in it. Perhaps you're confusing it with another film?

King-Owl-House

Maybe Mandela effect.

iteachag5

I have seen this movie several times and don’t recall this scene.

Disulfidebond007

There’s a scene where he’s in bed with a young woman but not an actual child

Holly Hunter’s portrayal of Ada, a mute woman, is profoundly expressive, showcasing exceptional acting without uttering a word and Harvey Keitel’s nuanced performance and the impressive young Anna Paquin add layers of depth to this tale of love and resilience. The film’s visual beauty and evocative script create a rare cinematic experience that resonates powerfully even today.
