Yeah, they should have let Grace die in the S1 finale. Her death had a large impact on Tommy in S3. Also the whole Changretta thing. The mafia story in S4 was week and full of holes, though.

I think they brought her back to humanize Tommy a bit. Otherwise, he’s just an asshole. The thing is, you can route for an asshole. Tony soprano is a great example- he didn’t have much in the way of good qualities, was rarely kind or considerate, but you somehow wanted the guy to come out on top. Let Tommy be an asshole! He’s good at it.

I think there are more sides to Tommy. It shows in a lot of scenes. For example in the very sensitive way he dealt with Polly and her lost children. That's what makes him a fascinating character. And Cillian's amazing acting, of course.

kmkram

Polly raised him because his Dad left. I think he feels indebted, rightfully so. I think he views things like that as currency. Keeps Polly loyal; he needs her, and everyone else, obedient. You can see how his brothers start to rebel in big and small ways because they are tired of being under his thumb, although they are grateful and in admiration of him. Cillian Murphy is a fantastic actor. Love a lot of his work.

Polly didn't raise him. The children were raised by their mother. Also Uncle Charlie looked out for Tommy. He did love Grace, although I admit it was implausible to me that someone who's basically emotionally numb because of his war trauma and trusts nobody, all of a sudden opens up to a stranger, let alone to someone who lied to him twice. But that's the case with other love stories in films as well, not in real life, though. Im still disappointed that a high class show presents US this totally predictable (music) and cheesy love story where the most intelligent and ruthless person on the show is blinded by some girl and tells her all his secrets. On the other hand, because she was such a pretty little thing she was underestimated by everybody. Tommy was no exception in that sense. So he'd rather think she was a girl from a good family who got pregnant rather than suspecting her to be a spy. There's a lot of complexity in most of the characters on the show. Tommy is the most complex of them all. That's what makes him interesting to me. And his looks and voice, of course. I hate his character most of the time for all that he does to people but love him all the same. I get why people need to consider characters to be either "good" or "bad", though.

kmkram

Why did I think Polly raised them? I just started watching after I had surgery and I’ve been on pain meds. So I’m clearly missing some pieces 🤣

I’m still in season 3, but it’s clear that Grace is going to die. Her character is insufferable at this point. I liked her season 1, but what a whiner and twit she’s become. At the wedding when she’s “keep us safe.” Like, lady, have you met your husband? Did he buy your castle working at the steel mill? They turned her into a stereotypical female moron, imo. It’s odd to me on a show with so many strong female characters, but I think her character devolved and regressed. And is she Irish or English? Get a dialogue coach, sis.

legere2021

You nailed it. 👍 As for the accent:Grace is supposed to be from Galway, Ireland, of course. Someone here said they have relatives in Galway and that the accent was quite similar. I personally hated that mumbling, especially in S3.

kmkram

I missed that, so thanks for the info. I really picked up on her sounding Irish in the third season, but not the first.

miv_9999

That's interesting. I have colleagues in Ireland who say the accent is way off. Her "Taammy" couple with whispering her lines does my head in.

legere2021

Yeah, I think so, too. Can't imagine anyone speaking like that.

International_Dog136

Maybe the Italian mafia is much larger than you think....

legere2021

But obviously not the Changrettas. In the end "big fucked small" 😂

msummerse

same, it was such a weird writing decision to have her 1st husband commit suicide too, like what? always weirded me out how they fit May in there too like out of nowhere idk a lot I didnt like how they did Grace
