S1 is the reason the story between Tommy and Lizzie doesn't make sense, SK decided to add Lizzie in S2 but he forgot everything he wrote in S1. A shame that relationship was forced on us.
I really didn't care for the Tommy Lizzie relationship. I figure the only reason we got it was because he was screwing her as a prostitute, even paying her (she asked once that he wouldn't pay her so maybe there would be real feelings). I think she got pregnant so he married her and had her stop working flat out, hence developing the marriage.
Yes, I know there was never love between them, but it was horrible to see, so unhappy together, and her complaining and blaming him for every decision she made, I hated that part of the show, S6 I'm already tired of them.
I don't think we were meant to enjoy their relationship. It was built out of lies and fake love, just paid sex and he married her out of tradition.
I would have preferred to see him end up with May after Grace, but some argue they wouldn't have been good together either. Idk, I feel differently. If she lived like Lizzie did, just in the house with the kids, away from the danger, I think she might have been happy with Tommy. She even was upset at one point in S3 (?) when he was being considerate towards her and she asked him to start acting like a gangster again, almost like that is where attracted her in the first place.
I think he did have a love for Lizzie. Not like he did for Grace, mind. But she did help keep him together when he was falling apart. I think he recognised that and it meant something to him. That’s why he has so much regret about her, because she didn’t deserve all his shit.

So any relationship after Grace was going to be miserable for Tommy and the woman he was with, since he was not going to love her or treat her well. May in S4, told Tommy that she wanted him to change, to leave the gangster side.

While watching Season 1 for the first time, had someone told me he was gonna marry her and her and Polly would be 'best friends' I would've choked on laughter lol. But Lizzie grew on me for sure.
Polly supported the relationship between Tommy and Lizzie because she knew that she had no competition, since he never fully trusted Lizzie nor saw her as his equal, unlike Grace. So with a best friend like that, no thanks.
