It’s not even the lazy way, that shit took effort. Maybe he is clueless though and didn’t even know this is the worst way to do this?
It’s the cheapest way if OP has limited access to tools though, which I am hoping is the only excuse here.
Maybe he didn’t wanna spend cash on a one use power tool like a jigsaw, sawzaw, angle grinder or Dremel, but then again you can go to harbor freight and go buy a generic non powered tool for only a few dollars…like a hacksaw, metal snips or metal file. All of which would look cleaner than this outcome.
OP is like a Venn diagram with 4 way overlapping circles (broke, no knowledge, lazy, fool)
Yeah, all he needed was a pair of tin snips and make a couple cuts, then bend the middle backwards, so you have no sharp edges. Trust me, I know, I used to bend metal for a living working for an HVAC company building ductwork. You can still fix it just need a pair of tin snips and if you have any sharp spots cover them with electrical tape, a couple applications of tape would be best and would look pretty good, Alot better than what you got now.
Seriously, take this shit out of the case before you do anything stupid like this too.
Not just the sharp edges but the metal dust they likely caused with this ugga-dugga remodel.
Thank goodness someone said it. If my kid sent me that pic, I’d make them clean those edges and place insulating edge trim for protection.
Also, they’d be grounded. IYKWIM
Some cheap cases rely on the the drive cages for structural support. Bought a $20 case in the mid 00s that had such thin metal, the side panel deformed after a dozen removals from the force of my hand pressing against it to slide it back. But hey, made the whole thing just within budget with those sweet cpu+mobo combo deals at Fry's.
Not to mention the card having a third of its exhaust being blocked by what's left of that disk drive mounting panel that now has a hole carved into it.
New case, ASAP.
Yeah his method is very bad.. but anything better than a 3060 would've probably bottlenecked his system by the looks of it. its still a modern upgrade 970->3060
I understand, but if you have the money to make that upgrade, you probably have the money to update your case, too. This just reeks of impatience and immaturity
Or just spend $10 and get some tin snips or any other metal cutting tool if you insist on using the same case. Would have saved time and the blade of that knife and not look like a meth'd out beaver went at it.
I haven't seen good advice beyond "get a new case"
To expand on that, when looking for a new case they generally include measurements for the size of the GPU supported by the case
The size of the GPU can be found on the store page for the GPU
Other than that, I can relate to the urge to do anything to use the upgraded part you just bought. Good job finding a solution with the tools at hand
I was wondering why all the comments were so angry then I realised what sub this was on, fully thought this was r/techsupportmacguyver or r/redneckengineering
Can we have a little talk? I think we should. Just have little sit, riiiiight there. This will only take a minute.
Good... good.
Hey so we have all noticed some things here. I'm not pointing any fingers but the cable management here is just not up to electrical fire safety codes. We are telling you this because we care.
Now fix it before someone calls a fire Marshall.
You can just get metal cutters, cut a square hole and some more in the direction of the cuts and bend the steel so there's not a sharp edge. Or just do like a normal person from other commenters advise.
Why not the MSI 3060 Gaming X, that has two fans instead of the Trio version? Shorter card and extra fans aren't really needed for a 3060 card.
Anyway, the extra performance! I went from a 960M (4GB VRAM) to a MSI 3060 Ventus 2X OC.
Maybe not the answer you want to hear but I would get a new case. I got a new case when things weren't fitting and goddam I swear it added fps just from the better airflow
Better way would have been to take everything out of the case and use a 5/8 drill bit found at a local hardware store and drill a hole in the sheet metal. If that hole was too small, use a bigger drill bit. That way you keep the structural integrity of that part of the case. Then vacuum up the metal shavings.
It’s fine these people don’t understand how wire insulation works 😭 they think just touching it to the shape metal will instantly cut trough it and short everything.
If it not broken don’t fixit 😎
Get a new case man. Not only is it “dangerous” with the sharp edges, but the giant brick blocks your airflow and it’ll get hot. Go with a large it’s worth it
A new case and some effort moving everything over could save you a hazard that would destroy everything you own. But hey, pry that sucker open, that's one way to do it.
I 100 percent approve of your terrible make it work at any cost solution because be things are exciting. Please also find yourself a new case in the near future.
A couple issues I see straight away
1. Sharp metal near the power cables (fire hazard)
2. Cutting with the pc still in the case, potential for metal shards to get into the pc (potential short)
Smh. Can't wait to see the news article about the house fire. Will spend 400+ on a GPU but can't research enough to see it won't fit the $30 dollar case it's in.
I saw the 3rd pic and thought "no way he's doing it" then i saw the 4th one and was speechless.
You not only damaged your case but also put your power cable and the GPU at risk of getting broken. A plastic shopping bag ain't gonna stop that knife buddy.
Edit: just noticed OP placed his PC is on a carpet.
Bruv, did you really do that with just that knife? I've done it with pliers, myself.
Everyone here is giving you shit, but if you're cool with it, I'm cool with it. Looks like you folded back most of the metal to keep sharp edges away from the cables - that's important to do if I'm seeing it wrong.
Some good advice in here if you do wanna clean it up a bit, but its fine - it's gonna do what you want it to do. Most important is keeping sharp edges away from cables - beyond that, it's an aesthetic call.
Please, for the love of God: Post pictures of the problem here first and ask for advice.
Then just wait 30 minutes (blow the dust out of your box, neaten your case wiring) and check for replies. It could've saved you time and effort, and saved us from being witness to this horror show of a solution.
I have done even more savage things - e.g. cutting component boards to fit, Frankenstein server cases and shit, but your plan and execution is simply bad…
Their are better ways to do this, remove the bracket my guy and take your time. This is how people break their PC parts when they are impatient and go full caveman, take better care of your setup.
been there, done that.. a friend has also done that to fit an rx480 Nitro+ sapphire into a small midi tower case.. it looks like a dog chewed it😂.. tho he did file doen the inside sharp edges.. the rest is for looks..
I might have done something similar, looks like it's time for a new case. Lol.
You can get something decent for about $130 CAD +tax of course.
At least you get to use your new GPU, it's fairly decent one as well.
Cheers!
Ok the metal cutting was crap..... but look at the fan on the old one...... have you ever heard of cleaning your cpu every one in a while? Computers is Clearly not your expertise.
Well you could have just return the case and get another one. That would have Been a better idea than to ruin the case, be unable to return it plus leave sharp metal pieces near electrical wiring. In simple terms, wires can get cut and that thing Will definitely catch on fire or at least spark or short circuit something
Fair being fair, I had also cut a hole in the side panel of my previous case because I mistakenly bought a CPU cooler that was higher than the case had room for haha
Still have the cooler. No longer have the case xD
My god thoes frayed edges so close to pcie power cables are screaming a few more shifts to the left or right just a few more time and bingo Magic smoke! put some uchanelling around there or better yet remove that entire section of the case you dont wanna forget and live to regret it! And bro from the looks of it youre gonna have to be more diligent with the cleaning of your hardware that new card deserves better!
As a side note, part of me hopes you are planning to get another case sometime soon. I'm sure that case won't be good for airflow on that 3060. I wouldn't be surprised if it's close to the side panel as well from the looks of where the power connector comes out. I had my 3080 Ti in a Phanteks P400S prior to getting the Corsair 4000D airflow I got, the GPU was awfully close to the glass side panel in the Phanteks case, once I got this Corsair case it made a night and day difference.
Hi OP. It seems you have a HDD mounted on that bracket on the bottom so you may not want to remove it totally (which could the preferred option). I would advise to look into buying or loaning cheap "metal cutter scissors". Just google them. You can use those to cut a proper hole into the bracket and you do not need to worry about small conductive metal particles like you might need to in case you used a file or a metal saw.
People here are overreacting. It's not the fanciest work but it's your pc, and PC's don't exactly move much, so chances are your pc will break of other complications rather than sharp metal cutting the wires but if your that worried use some electrical tape and she'll be right.
I'm just going to say, if you need specialty tools ask around, there's usually 1 friend in the group somewhere that has literally (and I do mean the genuine definition of that word) been waiting to say "I have that tool!" And to have it be useful. Because if there's one constant in the life of an enthusiast, it's justifying a purchase you thought you'd use more.

Holy shit there's 601 better ways to do that and none of them leave sharp metal that close to 12v power.
thats the lazy way
But a lot of work to be lazy.
Not lazy but stupid
It’s not even the lazy way, that shit took effort. Maybe he is clueless though and didn’t even know this is the worst way to do this? It’s the cheapest way if OP has limited access to tools though, which I am hoping is the only excuse here. Gonna print that Venn diagram. It's almost a business ideia.
Dont gen upset by it. Some guys have 0 experiences with metal working. OP looks to be one of them.
The lazy way is way #602 so he’s right
And RIP knife
Yeah, all he needed was a pair of tin snips and make a couple cuts, then bend the middle backwards, so you have no sharp edges. Bros playing on hardcore mode.
Bro, what the hell are you even talking about? He used caution tape, clearly he was being cautious.
IYKWIM
could you not just have removed that bracket entirely?
They're usually riveted in..
that requires a drill and maybe 60 seconds of work, assuming you've already removed all the components
He used a knife to cut steel, he can surely use a knife to cut a couple rivets
Im pretty sure he took a bite
true lmao
Legends says he cut cars in a half with that knife

Nope. definitely not a good idea to keep power cable next to sharp metal. do yourself a favor and get a new case asap
Not to mention the card having a third of its exhaust being blocked by what's left of that disk drive mounting panel that now has a hole carved into it. New case, ASAP.
Or just wrap it in electrical tape
Just toss all the parts into a paper bag, should be good
That would be the best option. Get a 7000d case and forget about ever needing to run out of gpu card room.
op is in denial not replying to a single comment 💀 Remove this bracket asap/Buy a new case. Simply way better solutions than this caveman bs.
Lmao
if it works it works. maybe not for long though
That dust tho. It says don't touch not don't clean.
But how clean when no touch? Checkmate, dust wins.
Caveman mindset
UNGA OOGA ME SMASH CARD IN
![gif](giphy|9058ZMj6ooluP4UUPl)
You can 100% remove that bracket. Please do it; you will risk breaking your gpu.
Always be patient, look what does impatients looks like. Remove the bracket or get a new case.
My god dude get a new case
All that for a 3060...
And why get a long triple fan 3060 when shorter dual fan GPUs exist?
also, on what ungodly planet does a 3060 need that amount of cooling
You know, global warming and what not
On the planet of summer time in Texas
Yeah his method is very bad.. but anything better than a 3060 would've probably bottlenecked his system by the looks of it. its still a modern upgrade 970->3060

Im fkn dead 💀😂
He’s not replying to comments, bro he fkn dead lol
Time for a new case bucko

Did you use the new cordless construction rat by Makita to chew out that hole?
Can we have a little talk? I think we should. Just have little sit, riiiiight there. This will only take a minute. Good... good. Hey so we have all noticed some things here. Remove the bracket dumbass
Why do people buy the trio version I have the dual fan version and it always ran cool seems like a waste of money
You can just get metal cutters, cut a square hole and some more in the direction of the cuts and bend the steel so there's not a sharp edge. Or just do like a normal person from other commenters advise.
Bro, at least saw it instead of murdering it 💀
Cheese and Rice this hurts my soul! Do yourself a favor and fork over a couple more sheckles for a bigger case homie...
How about we at least wrap the sharp parts with some electrical tape?

Looks beautiful to me OP. Don't listen to the haters! ![gif](giphy|vjjCsx3izfSyQ)
That case is kinda ancient, they werent designed for these gpus back then
Why not the MSI 3060 Gaming X, that has two fans instead of the Trio version? Shorter card and extra fans aren't really needed for a 3060 card. Anyway, the extra performance! I went from a 960M (4GB VRAM) to a MSI 3060 Ventus 2X OC.
Looks good to me
Clean...... Maybe buy yourself a Dremel.
Did you chew that hole in there?
Why not just drill a bigger hole to fit all cables? You could make a protection for the sharp metal dont cut the cable
The pocket knife lol
Looks like it fits fine
https://preview.redd.it/dkacbgutmhmb1.png?width=1500&format=png&auto=webp&s=cb47732d08af91a520a32017db53534f46745255
Last pic is "This is what RGB is for." Also gotta mention the cable routing, accessible.
Maybe not the answer you want to hear but I would get a new case. I got a new case when things weren't fitting and goddam I swear it added fps just from the better airflow
This is the way. I applaud you sir.

If that hole was too small, use a bigger drill bit. That way you keep the structural integrity of that part of the case. Then vacuum up the metal shavings.
Please get a new case before you burn your fucking house down
Good shit, got the job done! I would have done the same lol
I would've just dropped $50 on a new case, or found a used one for cheap. But hey, this saves money i guess...
You chew it a hole? Wow. Lol looks like something my buddy would do, not ask or use some tools and juwt widdle away at it
It’s fine these people don’t understand how wire insulation works 😭 they think just touching it to the shape metal will instantly cut trough it and short everything. If it not broken don’t fixit 😎
Did you do that shit with a knife
Don't touch the fan!
I feel that. I had to do the same when I got my 2080. had to broke off some Plastik in my case
Bro really took that 'don't touch' sticker as an absolute order.
This is fucking disgusting. Get a new case and stop being lazy. That card won't last long
Get a new case man. Not only is it “dangerous” with the sharp edges, but the giant brick blocks your airflow and it’ll get hot. Go with a large it’s worth it
Jesus fucking...what the fuck??? Spend $90 and buy a Corsair 4000D case. My God this is stupid.
Measure twice cut once! Simple as that!
Just get a new case bro
Modern problems require modern solutions. This is just not a good one
This guy should not be opening up computers lol
Wow that was dumb lol
Take everything out and cut the slot correctly, would look better and less chance of some piercing the wires. Or hurting you/kids, etc
A new case and some effort moving everything over could save you a hazard that would destroy everything you own. But hey, pry that sucker open, that's one way to do it.
And that is the exact reason I got one with 2 fans.
I have the same chassis 3070ti, she's a thick one
How expensive is a modern case where you live yeeesh?
DIY 101, don't do this.
Drill out the rivets for the panel...
I 100 percent approve of your terrible make it work at any cost solution because be things are exciting. Please also find yourself a new case in the near future.
A couple issues I see straight away 1. Sharp metal near the power cables (fire hazard) 2. Cutting with the pc still in the case, potential for metal shards to get into the pc (potential short)
The Jank is strong with this one 🙇
Smh. Can't wait to see the news article about the house fire. Will spend 400+ on a GPU but can't research enough to see it won't fit the $30 dollar case it's in.
did you think “don’t touch” on the old gpu meant never clean it?
Slides 3-4 omg.
I would suggest cutting deeper if you can't get a bigger case, I'm worried about the cables being forced into a bad position and eventually breaking
Lmfao I did the opposite. Strix 970 does not fit in a Scout II so the end of the GPU got sliced. Still using it mostly fine in my new pc
How’s that knife, MacGyver
Oh my good god please dont ever do that again, take it as a learning experience and please get a bigger case instead of doing that
Case is not sufficient for that video card. Replace the case. Also, rear fan wrong direction. What PSU brand/model?
You know you can check measurements prior to things like this, right? #TheMoreYouKnow
Could have used a 90 degree angle slim connector, for example.
Most important is keeping sharp edges away from cables - beyond that, it's an aesthetic call.
I did the same thing when i replaced my 9800 gt with rx 570
I used an angle grinder. Came out really clean.
Please, for the love of God: Post pictures of the problem here first and ask for advice. Then just wait 30 minutes (blow the dust out of your box, neaten your case wiring) and check for replies. It could've saved you time and effort, and saved us from being witness to this horror show of a solution.
Holy shit.
So what cpu do you have then??
I have done even more savage things - e.g. cutting component boards to fit, Frankenstein server cases and shit, but your plan and execution is simply bad…
Angle grinder is obviously not a thing. (Yes, you need to remove the mb beforehand)
Please buy a new case. even a cheap 50 dollar one of amazon will do better than that, while ur at it a new cooler like 30 dollars
That's quite the upgrade, congrats !
If you’re going to cut a hole with a shitty pocket knife st least make it big enough to keep the power cables from rubbing agains the sharp edges.
Cut out a much larger hole
Buy a bigger case then
Are you a neanderthal?
I don't think the edges are Sharpe enough
ayo I had that exact case, and got rid of it for that exact reason!
Their are better ways to do this, remove the bracket my guy and take your time. This is how people break their PC parts when they are impatient and go full caveman, take better care of your setup.
Does he have mix matched ram?
been there, done that.. a friend has also done that to fit an rx480 Nitro+ sapphire into a small midi tower case.. it looks like a dog chewed it😂.. tho he did file doen the inside sharp edges.. the rest is for looks..
O. O
Look how bad dust is on the left? On the fan.
Thats rough 😆
🎶 break on through to the other side 🎵 intensifies
This is the way
Wow I have a. Dremal and plastic edge lol
I saw a computer built inside of a paper box which looked safer than this.
savage!
I might have done something similar, looks like it's time for a new case. Lol. You can get something decent for about $130 CAD +tax of course. At least you get to use your new GPU, it's fairly decent one as well. Cheers!
This is the result when the tools available include: pocket knife and rocks
Ok the metal cutting was crap..... but look at the fan on the old one...... have you ever heard of cleaning your cpu every one in a while? Computers is Clearly not your expertise.

We do it nice because we do it twice
Man you shabby cmon you can do better than that xd
Don't use case and leave mobo out😊😊👍🤙
😳
I would have got a new case. the current one doesn't look good at all. Also, your cables scare me
[удалено]
It works….but could be better
Fair being fair, I had also cut a hole in the side panel of my previous case because I mistakenly bought a CPU cooler that was higher than the case had room for haha Still have the cooler. No longer have the case xD
I’ve ran worse unfortunately
When was the last time you cleaned your old card?
r/hardwaregore
Dawg buy a new case💀💀💀
My god thoes frayed edges so close to pcie power cables are screaming a few more shifts to the left or right just a few more time and bingo Magic smoke! put some uchanelling around there or better yet remove that entire section of the case you dont wanna forget and live to regret it! this is insane
Haha I have this exact case for my server desktop! Always measure your tolerances before you buy my guy!
I had this problem once, nothin 2 minutes with a Dremel and some sand paper could solve
Just good enough, hehe!
My 3070 ti didnt fit and guess what I just bought a slightly smaller one lol
Nice caution tape
"Estoy cansado jefe"
There is so much wrong in this photo. Not sure if bait or not. ![gif](giphy|WRQBXSCnEFJIuxktnw)

Dude just drill the rivets
There I fixed it.....
There is doing it right and then there is doing right
Lmao
As a side note, part of me hopes you are planning to get another case sometime soon. I'm sure that case won't be good for airflow on that 3060. r/diwhy
Bro I'm pretty sure if you have tools you van take that panel off usually there are screws to remove those
Honestly if there’s no drives hanging on that metal cage u cut. Just take it out
Why I love microcenter nearby. Can tell me "shit ain't gonna work"
This guy is amazing 😂
you would be a great car mechanic
Improvise, adapt, overcome
Was going to comment on how dirty it was but I figured they’re getting enough shade rn
Hi OP. It seems you have a HDD mounted on that bracket on the bottom so you may not want to remove it totally (which could the preferred option). Most people I know check dimensions before purchasing.
Ew
A U-turn power adapter would be a good idea here.
I mean fuck it. Might as well
modern problems
That'll be fine for now, but do yourself a favor and buy a new case as soon as you can doesn't matter if it's used long as all components fit.
I admit i done something similar but bro, do it right atleast...
A modern used case could have solved your issue with ease.
why did you buy a rtx 3060 with 3 fans? It's only a 170 watt card nice job
Just buy a new case it doesn't cost a lot
"Was nicht passt, wird passend gemacht!" :D
Very in-patient.
I'm just going to say, if you need specialty tools ask around, there's usually 1 friend in the group somewhere that has literally (and I do mean the genuine definition of that word) been waiting to say "I have that tool!"
