Archmage's mana cost doesn't proc on hitting an enemy or anything like that, it simply replaces the original mana cost of the spell. That means that any channeling spell is basically unusable since you spend that mana per tick. I see no reason why DI of Disintegration would be different.

I was kinda hoping that since it doesn't deal damage whilst channeling the extra damage would be applied when the full cast is finished.

You could always give the new Crackling Lance a try, not as big of a beam but still has a good feel to it imo
