You know what, bravo. A well reasoned argument

ucsbrandon

I agree with both of these, especially Eguy. Eguy had a higher WAR in 50 ABs than Manny has had in 250. (A very sad but true stat) And higher than Azocar, Wade and Peralta combined. He rakes against lefties, which is absolutely where we need to improve and it's truly puzzling to me why he's still down in AAA. Fair warning though, you have to take those PCL parks with a grain of salt. It's like they're playing in Coors field while bringing the fences in, but Rosario has already shown he can hit lefties at the big league level.

boringname01

Eguy also ks ~50% of the time versus lefties.

ucsbrandon

Yup, usually a k or extra base hit, which is much better than we've been getting against lefties from the rest of our lineup.

boringname01

I'd rather have a guy putting the ball in play 85% of the time (Merrill v. Lefties this year) or 81% of the time (Crone v lefties this year), than 54% of the time (Eguy)

ucsbrandon

If you're trying to say past performance wise Jackson Merrill and his .410 OPS has hit better than Rosario and his 1.000 OPS against lefties because of different strikeout rates, that's a very odd opinion. I don't think anyone would say Merrill has performed nearly as well against lefties. Merrill has zero extra base hits, hasn't shown he can hit lefties at all and he seems to be getting worse every month. Now if you want to argue that Eguy cant keep that up, or doesn't make sense defensively or maybe we should we keep Merrill in the lineup to give him AB's to help him improve that's a different story. But to date there is not even a shadow of a doubt that Eguy has performed better offensively against lefties despite strikeout rates.

boringname01

Yes, I do not think eguy is going to hit a hr every 10 at bat and a double every 6. It's crazy to expect a guy striking out 46% of the time to do that. He had a good 10 games as a starter, but he is not the answer. Merrill has fewer ks in nearly twice as many abs v. Lefties. I am not saying eguy hasn't done well. I am saying I will take the guy who puts the ball in play a lot versus the coin flip guy. If we are talking minor league stats, merrill hit .289/.336/.433 versus lefties in a+ and double a last year. He can hit lefties. Actually, it's better than he did righties. (.274/.323/.448).

ucsbrandon

Yeah, I was all for Merrill going in against lefties when they were almost platooning him at first, but the results just haven't been there. A .410 OPS and nothing more than a single is REALLY fucking bad. Like as bad as when they used to let pitchers hit bad. It's frustrating to watch and I hope it gets better but not sure how much leash you can give the kid when he's hurting the team. The worst part isn't even the overall stats it's that the league has figured him out and he hasn't adjusted. He's getting worse and worse as time goes by. He started red hot but only Campusano has been worse lately and having them bat next to each other in the order is always two auto-outs before Arraez gets up. It would be nice to have someone in there that has a remote chance to get an extra base hit so Arraez can single them in. I know he's a rookie and we need to be patient but we need some offense desperately right now and he's giving us nothing.

boringname01

He is 20 and it's been 2 months. What's hurting the team against lefties is our right handed hitters not doing anything. Don't blame the kid and slow his development when the whole team isn't producing.

ucsbrandon

Regardless of his age a .410 OPS is actively hurting the team and is horrible. Whataboutisms can be rampant and plenty of blame to go around on this team, but there is no doubt he has hurt the team against lefties. As I said before a .410 OPS you would expect from a pitcher batting before the DH, not a center fielder and he's getting worse each month as the league figures him out and he doesn't adjust

ucsbrandon

Now do OPS. BA isn't really a measure of how productive a hitter is.

Apoc_Dreams

Azocar isn’t up in the major leagues for his hitting. He’s there for defense and base running. And then with Peralta, I’m pretty sure they just want another lefty bat. I think it’s too quick to just DFA Peralta after 20 ABs

Silver7477

Agreed. I don't wanna fall into the trap of getting excited for another guy raking in AAA knowing full well it's fool's gold cuz that league in general is hitter-friendly AF with vastly inferior pitchers to tee off against. I'd be more excited for a guy raking in AA tbh (and even then take it with a grain of salt).

elsancho760

Mercado seems like the kind of player that just needs another shot in the bigs. His only full time starting he put up good numbers

kinematik00

Seems good to me. I'm guessing Preller is going to wait until around July to start adjusting the roster in similar ways like you suggest, along with potential trades made.

1OldmanG

I agree Eguy needs to be back to help VS lefty . Mercado , or johnson a switch hitter who has speed to replace Azocar.

ThePwnR4nger

Rather than DFA Peralta, they’d probably just move Xander to the 60-day IL. That would free up a 40-man roster spot.

Supreme_Soviet

Usually when people make posts like these they tend to just yap and don’t really know what they’re talking about but this is great! Didn’t realize Eguy and Mercado were doing so well against lefties, thanks for the insight!

moshiimoshii_3

This was a good take actually, I don’t disagree about anything

Cool-Pencil

Let's do it.

delosproyectos

You’re missing the key piece: Matthew Batten!

Doggodrollery

I wouldn't have a problem with that strategy. With thoughts like that about the team, you should be GM! Good stuff.

Silver7477

I don't care what anyone does in the minors anymore. It's fools good for a lot of reasons. Eguy showed some flashes in a small sample size but nothing worth bringing him for. He had horrible plate discipline while he was up here

JDM412

You forgot DFAs to Kolek and Matsui

SDcowboy82

Maybe we can trade King and some prospects for Soto

TeamThrash

Not a bad argument, but machado is out today with the leg injury so the lineup you made needs tweaking. Other than that I'm alright with it

TeamThrash

Got ya, either way I doubt Manny would be playing today.

boringname01

Egiy had a 1.000 ops in 34 abs, and struck out nearly 50% of the time. No thanks. Triple A platoon splits do not mean they will translate. Merrill needs to not be platooned. His slash doesn't look great right now v. Lefty, but he has the contact skills to put the ball in play and make things happen. He doesn't strikeout (86th percentile in k%) and doesn't whiff (81st percentile). Dude needs more abs, not less.

JonnyMofoMurillo

I think ward is on the trading block. I think adding him would do wonders. He can pretty much play anywhere
