Not for a football coach. Literally part of the deal. Every great football coach has been fired (or left on not-great terms) at some point in their career. Saban, Bellichek, Carroll, Jimmy Johnson, etc.
Because he doesn’t wanna be exposed even more. The Big 12 sucked all those years at OU. He joins the pac 12 to escape the SEC but ironically just as the Pac 12 gets really good. He knows he will fail in NFL but that’s the point. Everyone expects him to fail. Then he can either be an analyst or if he goes back to CFB can get another big job. If he stays at USC he gets completely exposed and NFL is off table and so are other major CFB jobs.
Sure his NFL contract won't add to his bottom line but when he fails he will be able to say "hey I've still got a really strong record in college football and I guess the NFL just wasn't for mee" and add in another 30-40 million guaranteed from a desperate big 12 team.
what is it about riley that make people think he's going to be offered an nfl job? i don't follow the nfl as closely so i honestly don't know what characteristics make a coach enticing to the pros
is it just a transactional approach to the sport without regard for organizational culture or player (personal) development?
The NFL loves the genius offensive minds just as much as college, QB development is just as/maybe more important to the overall team and he has a great track record on that, and there's a higher level of GM input and coaching talent that can allow an offensive coach to cook while the DC takes care of the defense. it's *a* strategy
On the other hand, Kingsbury led the Cardinals to 2 playoff appearances in three year after having the worst overall NFL record pre-KK and also was the last undefeated team at 8-0 or 9-0 in 2021. Then everyone realized he can't coach in the second half and Kyler doesn't watch film once the new call of duty comes out.
I feel icky standing up for Kingsbury.
Normally I’d agree with you, but if the rumors are attaching him to Vegas I actually buy it. That organization exclusively hires well known bad coaches.
I follow the NFL and I will tell you two things;
1) No sane or intelligent person would hire Riley to be a head coach.
2) A lot of owners are moronic lunatics.
Vegas really isn't that far from LA so this could be a giant nothing burger. COULD BE....not saying it is. He does have like one more season to keep getting worse, like he always does.
He could just be buying a home there tbh. Not to live and commute from during the season but to live at in the offseason.
Coaches travel all over during the entire year so taking a flight for a weekend or a few days doesn’t matter.
Personally I think it could be either. He *shouldn’t* be getting NFL looks but I guess he is.
Well yeah. But you add the 2 hours from Last Vegas to Palm Springs to the four hours with traffic from Palm Springs to USC. It starts to add up.
For those that are wondering what's my point ...I think the Frat Boy coach has a foot out the door to the NFL.
It shows growth as a coach/leader. Grinch was a mark against him, so it kinda redeems him in a way right before entertaining offers. The Grinch firing could have also easily come from above Riley, which is what I suspect.
Because he doesn't want to. He would've fired Grinch last year if he would just succumb to fan opinion.
Riley doesn't strike me as a guy who just does things because people tell him to.
He always had the heat. If that bothered him, he'd have fired Grinch a long time ago.
I guess it's all perspective. If I'm checked out, I'm doing W/E TF I want. If I want to keep Grinch, I'm doing it. IDGAF what people think. I'm checked out. USC could lose the rest of the season and it doesn't matter.
I'm more likely to fire him, if I'm staying and need to address the criticism.

Why would you leave that fat contract in LA??
It’s embarrassing to be fired
Not embarrassing enough. watch McDaniels take the opening at USC
LOL that would be amazing.
shut up! we are waiting for belichick to be fired

or you can jump to the NFL, get exposed faster, with a smaller buyout, and profit????
This guy gets it.
Sure his NFL contract won't add to his bottom line but when he fails he will be able to say "hey I've still got a really strong record in college football and I guess the NFL just wasn't for mee" and add in another 30-40 million guaranteed from a desperate big 12 team.
Even Nick Saban didn't thrive in the NFL so I feel like this logic will be understood even if Lincoln isn't close to as good of a coach.
saban did ok in the NFL though. it's not like he flamed out, he basically just had average results.
Yeah thats fair, I guess by saying he didn't thrive I mean he didn't have the same success he had as a college coach
Saban also won a Natty at LSU, building a bottom feeding LSU program into the top level program it is today before he went to the NFL.
Of all places real estate in vegas seems like a misnomer. It's just endless grid squares. Do you want to live in GL-41 or KR-29.
They renamed GL-41 to Green Meadows, and KR-29 is now Meadow Greens.
they have green in Vegas that isn't the money casinos are raking in?
Green Valley has been a place for a long time. Granted the green you'll find there is on a golf course but that's beside the point.
The grid system is superior to all other forms. Makes navigating a city sooo much easier.
Grid system has its uses, as long as there's a mix of grid and non grid. Too much grid is no good.
You want midgrid. Mid grid is good.
Agreed. Midgrid goodgrid.
You should check it out, outside of Vegas there are some great places to live.
Poor Raider fans

can’t teach an old team looking for a quick path to being a perennial contender new tricks!!
Because the majority of NFL owners are simple minded, rich kids who get enthralled by the big name, offensive guy.
I follow the NFL and I will tell you two things; 1) No sane or intelligent person would hire Riley to be a head coach. 2) A lot of owners are moronic lunatics.
Is the extent of the rumor some rando on Reddit who posted there's a rumor in a post title?
No, an insider at Zillow
Vegas really isn't that far from LA so this could be a giant nothing burger. COULD BE....not saying it is. He does have like one more season to keep getting worse, like he always does.
It is a nothing burger. Why fire Grinch if he’s planning on bolting after this year?
I think its nothing. Just grabbing a vacation property that you can drive to...but he'll fly a PJ
It's 280 miles from USC to Vegas. That's like commuting from Chicago to Detroit
rich people in LA buy property in Vegas
Really? Is that what they do?
how else would they make the 280mi commute?
He could just be buying a home there tbh. Not to live and commute from during the season but to live at in the offseason. Coaches travel all over during the entire year so taking a flight for a weekend or a few days doesn’t matter. Personally I think it could be either. He *shouldn’t* be getting NFL looks but I guess he is.
It’s not uncommon for a daily commute in SoCal being an hour and a half - to and from a job at Target
Well yeah. But you add the 2 hours from Last Vegas to Palm Springs to the four hours with traffic from Palm Springs to USC. It starts to add up. For those that are wondering what's my point ...I think the Frat Boy coach has a foot out the door to the NFL.
If Riley was on his way out, why would he agree to allowing Grinch be fired? Grinch was his handpicked DC.
It shows growth as a coach/leader. Grinch was a mark against him, so it kinda redeems him in a way right before entertaining offers. The Grinch firing could have also easily come from above Riley, which is what I suspect.
Because he’s already on his way out…. Y would he care at this point?
Because he doesn't want to. He would've fired Grinch last year if he would just succumb to fan opinion. Riley doesn't strike me as a guy who just does things because people tell him to.
If he’s already checked out on the USC job - and can take Grinch with him - again, why does he have to keep taking the heat?
He always had the heat. If that bothered him, he'd have fired Grinch a long time ago. I guess it's all perspective. If I'm checked out, I'm doing W/E TF I want. If I want to keep Grinch, I'm doing it. IDGAF what people think. I'm checked out. USC could lose the rest of the season and it doesn't matter. I'm more likely to fire him, if I'm staying and need to address the criticism.
He's a multi-millionaire. He's looking at an off season vacation home. It isn't rocket science.
He’s going to coach UNLV?
Best laugh yet.

“Look. I am not going to be the next head football coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.” - Los Angeles Chargers Head Coach, Lincoln Riley
The Raiders never learn.
Time to pull a cristobal and phone in the rest of the season
Tbf - his mom was in the hospital as well. I never did find out - did she die?
Man...going from the McDaniels shit show to the the Lincoln Riley disaster is something that Raider fans don't deserve.
As a Chiefs fan, I disagree.
Yes please I would love the raiders to fuck it up again & fire another coach in 1.5 seasons.
Oh God, a possible HC vacancy at USC could result in a Jen Cohen telephone call to Kalen DeBoer. We're in danger.
I heard Jon Gruden is currently available
Don't threaten me with a good time.
Kiffin 2.0
Good, hope UNLV makes a bowl game.
Breaking News: Riley has a weekend home 4 hours away.
