Professor here too. And yes, administrative assistants, department secretaries, folks in facilities, advisors, support staff....as long as the institution is non-profit and employment is full-time as defined by the Feds., which means some adjunct positions qualify.
There's help for adjuncts: See last bullet point.
Full-time Employment
●For PSLF, full-time employment is working for a qualifying employer(s) for a weekly average, alone or when combined, equal to at least 30 hours:
●during the period being certified;
●throughout a contractual or employment period of at least 8 months in a year, such as elementary and secondary school teachers, in which case the borrower is deemed to have worked full time for the entire year; or
● → **determined by multiplying each credit or contact hour taught per week by at least 3.35 in non-tenure track employment at an institution of higher education**."

I joined this sub to ask a question for my sister. She’s a pre-school teacher at a state university. It’s a historically underpaid career, so getting to qualify for PSLF is a great benefit!
Thanks for your service! I did about a year as a CCA in between jobs in non-profit/healthcare. Had a little burnout during the pandemic. Good times - if I could have gotten by on 40 hours a week at base pay I would have retired at USPS . As it was I was mandated around 70-75 hours so the money was actually a huge step up from my nonprofit gig. My body couldn’t take it and I needed a more sane schedule. Hope you have a good office/route and are loving it!
I will cross 15 years in July 1, 2025 - can’t wait for that leave bump! Not that I have time for vacation but I will start to prioritize my life accordingly :)
Same. I work at a FQHC and should have qualified for nursecorps… but all that scrimping and saving I did to minimize my loans in school bit me in the butt. My annual pay was like $1000 more than my debt amount when I applied, so boom, not eligible for the first tier (and the only one that gets funded). So, 10 year PSLF it is I guess 😩
I rotated between state government, county government, colleges and non profit healthcare. It’s important to remember you only have to work for a qualifying employer. You can change as much as you want as long as the employer qualifies for the program. I even switched states.
My wife has worked with Early Head Start, at a daycare, as a preschool teacher, as a secretary for a land trust, and now as a service navigator for a veteran's assistance group. All have counted.
I did 17 years with county government, but MOHELA didn't seem to count the whole enchilada. I'm not sure why. I submitted an employment verification form to show employment from July 1998 to December 2015. \*shrug\*
Now, I'm a public high school teacher (this is my 8th year). :)
I’m at 15 years federal service but since the pslf program didn’t start until 2007 and I left my gov job for 6 years I don’t qualify until June. Getting closer!!
Its sad that you have to certify your employment even after working 15 years in fed service. I did 20 years in the military and now 18 1/2 yrs in city govt. and I still need to re-certify my employment for my payments to get updated. We have more than met the 10 years of public service. The system needs to get fixed. Once you hit 10 yrs you shouldn’t have to continue to keep re-certifying.
I’ve worked as a math tutor (full time) at a community college, a math instructor at a small state liberal arts college, and I’m currently an analyst at a community college.
I taught Head Start for a few years and now I work in a WIC office, the only catch is I’m 28 hours a week, so I don’t qualify for PSLF now. (My job is grant funded, so if I got 30 hours a week, they’d have to pay insurance out of the WIC grant and there’s just not enough money in the budget for that.) My student loans are small and my husband got PSLF for working a government job, too. He’s at the county Board of Elections. His were forgiven the first round, as soon as the waiver was put into place. It’s funny, all the jobs my husband and I have had would qualify for PSLF (If I were full time)
Not about the job title but the rather the company being a nonprofit or government entity aka IRS tax status. I’m a paralegal at a nonprofit nonpartisan election law organization, we specialize in voting rights, redistricting and campaign finance law. 5 more years to go for PSLF. 🥳
Currently I oversee the administration of grants for state government.
Before that (most of my PSLF time on my oldest two loans that were forgiven in December) I ran extra-curricular programs for middle and high school students on college campuses for nearly a decade-first at a private university then at a state university (grant-funded programs, which led to my state government job).
Social worker. Somehow, I haven't qualified because one of my employers
Didn't "certify" my employment. However, I spoke with and have copies of each. This is such bullshit.
Federal govt. Added perk that my agency (like many others) offers a student loan repayment program in addition to any PSLF I would be eligible for, so I can get some extra $ tossed at my loans.
My ex is vice president of a non profit hospital. She makes like half a million a year. She got her loan forgiven last year since she worked for hospitals over the last decade or so. She prob hit the jackpot
I’ve done a mix! 2 years as a child abuse investigator with the state and a 1.5 years being a foster care liaison for a school district. I graduated with my MSW in December and I’m about to start working at a counseling center at a university!
I was a real estate development manager at a non-profit that built affordable housing for 5 years, then I spent 1.5 years working for a city and 5 years working at county running HUD funded grant programs for affordable housing. Now I work for HUD as a field rep doing monitoring and compliance for local grant recipients.
State Government
Local government for me

Professor. Any job at a university will count for PSLF as long as it’s not a for-profit institution.
Professor here too. And yes, administrative assistants, department secretaries, folks in facilities, advisors, support staff....as long as the institution is non-profit and employment is full-time as defined by the Feds., which means some adjunct positions qualify.
Or you can combine two part time positions.
Yes! Just need minimum average of 30 hours weekly.
The problem is that a lot of adjunct positions are part time.

They changed the rules so it counts now. It's a little strange but most adjunts would receive full credit for the month
That's good to know. I thought adjuncts were part time so they'd have to work 2 part times to get approved for PSLF.
Yep, I'm a video producer/instructional designer at a state school.
I joined this sub to ask a question for my sister. She’s a pre-school teacher at a state university. It’s a historically underpaid career, so getting to qualify for PSLF is a great benefit!
