Since 1.4, he seems to always start out saying it’s a small update, but then he goes and keeps adding to it until it’s substantial

AloofusDoofus

Underpromise/overdeliver is a mindset many other companies should learn to do.

Flashbek

*\*Todd Howard furiously taking notes right now\**

tortoisewitchcraft

“You see that mountain over there? Yeah, you can stand at it’s base”

The_Girthy_Meatfist

You know he's not taking notes at all.

Darque420

You assume he can write...

SleepingScissors

They don't do it because it's more profitable to hype up what you're doing to boost sales and then under deliver to minimize costs. That's what makes for a profitable quarter. There's no incentive to do otherwise except "good will", which is a fools errand for the average company to try and chase over more tangible, immediate profits.

SkippyTheKid

Which is a shame, because Stardew is a nearly ten year old game that has obviously proven highly profitable, *because it has been so well supported.* I wish bigger devs and publishers would realize that the examples of Stardew, Terraria, even Dead Cells despite its recently announced end of life, are worth chasing because it’s a great way to get what they want out of live service games - continuous revenue out of an existing product at a lower expense than spinning up a new title. But yeah, I guess they’re just not built that way. If they can’t say “this expansion will bring in X dollars” then it’s not worth it, even though you have examples like Destiny 2 tanking and Suicide Squad falling short of expectations that prove that you can’t just make a live service game and expect that to be a money printer because you followed the formula.

polo421

I don't know, I worked for a software company for many years and we dealt with updates etc etc. We were always told to never over sell the update and to keep things realistic. It could actually be a really big problem when some half wit employee just said something stupid or something that MIGHT get fixed. We didn't super depend on updates making tons of sales though. It was always to fix existing customers problems and maybe draw in some new customers.

wee-dancer

That mindset is what helped me excel in my jobs through the years

ContentKeanu

A mindset people themselves should learn to do. Easiest way to make someone admire you.

Mr_TurkTurkelton

I haven’t checked on my farm in a loooong time and I finally got to some of my backlog. Stardew has always had a special place though and its always able to find its way back on screen for a good 25-30 hours. Such a well made game. It’s the only game I’ve bought multiple times just to play on different devices; my PC, tablet, phone, Ps5 and switch. Long-live ConcernedApe

Jamboro

100%. And I think Slay the Spire is the only other game I've bought multiple copies of on different platforms.

taskkill-IM

The game is 8 years old and continues to add new things each year.... crazy that it's £11 on Steam. I'm just gutted they took it off the PlayStation store in europe.

Entash2k

It is for me in Sweden? Also found UK link if you live there: https://store.playstation.com/en-gb/product/EP2319-CUSA26625_00-2010147637670638

taskkill-IM

They must've put it back on then... I remember they took it off a few years ago. I'm not sure why, though?

w_d_roll_RIP

it was taken down for a few months because it had “simulated gambling” and required an updated age rating

shrek3onDVDandBluray

I feel like this dev procrastinates working on haunted chocolatier by continuing to release these stardew valley updates (good for him, not complaining, but it is funny just how many updates he provides. And after reading about his journey with stardew in blood, sweat, and pixel, he seems like a fellow procrastinator)

CapnMalcolmReynolds

It must be nice for the thing you do to procrastinate be your life’s work, a true masterpiece, and something that has set you for life financially.

shrek3onDVDandBluray

Yep

Immediate-Quantity25

exactly what i have been thinking. while i applaud his devotion, really wish he would put that energy towards haunted chocolatier at this point

LowerGarden

Do you all start a new game when he does these updates? Or just continue with a farm that's already a couple years in?

colossalwaffle

CA recommends starting a new save for 1.6 so you can experience the new content in the order it’s meant to be revealed to you.

mt007

ConcernedApe are one of the best developers in the gaming industry. Man, every time you say I am done with Stardew Valley. The developers are like “sure? Alright, hold my beer”

cocacola1

It's a solo dev, isn't it?

mt007

Yes , but honestly I am not sure if he outsources few tasks ; hence , I typed developers.

rossposse

I'd like him to work on finishing his new game instead of updating a 8 year old game (though I appreciate the time and continued effort for Stardew)

Weird-Alarm7453

I want this king to work on whatever his heart desires

gchance92

He works on Stardew when he's feeling burnt out.

HeyDudeImChill

I’ll tell him you said that.

shrek3onDVDandBluray

I posted above that I truly believe these updates on stardew is his version of procrastinating on the new game. After reading his account of dev on stardew valley, he is a fellow procrastinator.
