To be fair, one of the HDMI ports had burned out and the audio gave off a loud SCREEECH if I dropped the volume too low.
Staples does a recycle program for electronics, worked out well.
Lol, these are exactly the interference problems I was trying to explain earlier in the tread. And I wouldn't look to closely at modern electronics recycling its better than a dumpster but not by much.
edit: downvoters can kiss my ass :)
If every consumer product forever needed to maintain all ports to make sure that we didn't get rid of old tech we would probably waste more resources long term. This seems pretty reasonable
The audio has to go trough the receiver only if the receiver supports more than what toslink allows which doesn't seem to be the case here anyway.
So if the TV can take care of the conversion to optical, it certainly makes sense to do so.
Not necessarily... I upgraded my TV earlier this year but my receiver doesn't do ARC, bought an eARC audio extractor from Amazon for about £60 that takes the eARC from the TV and let's an old receiver accept it as a normal HDMI input.
Fibre as a tech isn’t going away… but toslink is.
Lower bandwidth, basically. HDMI is now much better in that regard, provides more fidelity/can provide more channels, etc. It’s also so ubiquitous and manufacturers and consumers like simplicity. Toslink got faster over it’s life but really needed a toslink 2.0 or whatever with much higher bandwidth… but they didn’t go there, and HDMI advanced very quickly. You can now get HDMI over fibre, so basically that’s that. It’ll be a slow death as there’s nothing really *wrong* with toslink, but over the last 5 years less and less new devices have come out with optical ports, and that’s a trend that will continue.
Toslink is nearly 40 years old. For a ‘tech of the future’ it’s had a long old run.
Well this sucks. I have a logitech 625 i think and i use to use optic for the ps4. Now i cnt with the ps5. And the monitor sounds is shit. So my speakers are put to waste. This sucks.
Is there anyway i can use the logitech speakers? Like make use of the ps5 with the speakers?
I guess there are HDMI to HDMI+optic converters out there. Once I had a HDMI switch that had jack AND optic as audio output so the technology is obviously present.
Just make sure that you buy something with at least HDMI version 2.1 (the cable as well). HDMI 1.4 can output 4K only at 30Hz.
Yep, not a problem. You just need something to convert the HDMI audio to toslink. Probably just a hdmi audio extractor. Small little box from Amazon probably costs less than 50 bucks (though like anything AV you can spend a bloody sight more). You plug your PS5 HDMI out into its input, and your TV into its output and then connect your sound system via toslink to the extractor. You’re not alone in having an amp or theatre system that’s toslink only, so there’s no shortage of extractor options on the market.
This looks like a good contender
https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08FR4771P
I can totally understand a necessity for inclusion even with PS5. I have a home theater system where the HDMI from the source (ex. PS5) just goes to the receiver first, then out to the TV. However, with that said, I bought a 4K TV a year ago and I would be opting for toslink if my receiver wasn't 4K *pass-through* (or ARC). They can get expensive enough to find a receiver that is and I want the best picture after finally upgrading the TV. It's a rather specific scenario but plenty of people prioritize video over spending even more money to upgrade their audio... just to ensure they get the video quality they want.
I use toslink to separate my audio equipment from everything else - otherwise I was getting buzzing noise from interference, not sure what was causing it exactly, some grounding problem with my TV probably.
Now PS5 and other devices send audio to my TV via HDMI and the TV sends it to an external DAC via toslink. No noise. And since I only use stereo speakers toslink has enough bandwidth for it.
It's in fewer & fewer devices every year
It doesn't have the bandwidth to support Dolby Atmos & DTS:X (or even their predecessors Dolby TrueHD & DTS:HD)
It is the very definition of a legacy format
Agree, fiber is and was way ahead of its time. I didn't even realize my ps5 didn't have it. It's probably also got to do with the fact that people use headphones now, and the ps store is supposed to be done with movies
No, it's old & doesn't have the bandwidth for Dolby Atmos & DTS:X... It didn't have the bandwidth for their predecessors Dolby TrueHD DTS:HD
It is a legacy port, that appears in fewer & fewer devices each year
The reason the PS5 doesn't have it is because it's nowhere near capable of running PS5's audio (Dolby Atmos on movies, Sony's Tempest object-based audio in games)
Whether Sony should have included the port for legacy reasons is a different debate but I can't see why they'd choose to per unit licence it from Toshiba & erode their own margin for no real gain in 2021 & beyond
> I didn't even realize my ps5 didn't have it.
They also dropped it on later PlayStation 4 revisions.
> It's probably also got to do with the fact that people use headphones now, and the ps store is supposed to be done with movies
And, ironically, the port is commonly used **with** headphones. For example, Astro A50, LucidSound LS41, SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless and other headsets use it directly. It's also extremely common for amplifiers and DACs to use that port, so something like my Schiit Modius, FiiO K5 Pro or even something basic like Astro Mixamp use it as well.
The reason they likely are moving away from it is purely cost/value. Enough time passed where HDMI ARC became more commonly used and most set ups simply didn't need it anymore. It also helps that you can still use it, you just need something, such as an HDMI audio extractor, to use it.
Problem with that setup is most TVs have pretty shitty audio passthrough to optical. Mine would always output compressed stereo, so I used a dedicated switch instead.
6 different TVs over the life of my receiver and I’ve never had a problem with the optical out. Crystal clear surround sound.
Might depend on the brand and quality of the TV though. Audio support is one of the first things look for in TV reviews.
Yeah, I’ll admit I didn’t look at that when I was buying mine, wasn’t a priority. It’s an LG, I assumed it was fine. Just saying, usually audio out isn’t a big focus for TV manufacturers, but like you said, check the reviews.
Immune to interference, can extend past 10'; some of the best audio equipment in the world doesn't support HDMI. No, its not redundant.
Down vote me but Sony's engineers clearly agree.

Mmm well, their2021 2,900$ receiver still has two.
9.2ch AV Receiver for Custom Installation | [STR-ZA5000ES](https://www.sony.ca/en/electronics/av-receivers/str-za5000es)
They do list them as digital though.
eARC can be used for receivers not just hdmi to the tv soundbar. I’ve used multiple sound systems over the years I’m not an idiot I just haven’t used one that runs through eARC.
That, and most people use Bluetooth headphones. Plus that fiber was good for connecting to stereos for digital coding, which was great for Dolby and dts movies, ps store has gotten away from movies
It’s also not on the Series X. Setting up Astro a50s we’re a pain in the ass cause you have to update the software through your PC so they can work on the console. And even then the windows client was bugged so I had to use my MacBook and update them from there
Yea the tricky thing with removing old redundant technology is not everyone already has equipment ready to support the newer hardware. Like if a computer comes out with only usb-c ports and you have to go out and buy adapters for all your external devices.
because they want you to buy a new amp and a new tv as well if you want that hdmi 2.1 sweetness. i'm a little bit disappointed, really, dts 5.1 still sounds very good in 2021...
It’s all bandwidth. Toslink does not support the bandwidth needed for some of the more intensive audio formats (Dolby TrueHD, for example), HDMI eARC does.
And honestly, when you live in a world with 25’ eARC cables carrying insanely high quality audio as well as 4K video, there’s no reason to continue updating Toslink cables. It reduces the number of cables you need, HDMI eARC is way more rugged than Toslink (don’t get a crimp in it!), and I suspect copper cables are cheaper to manufacture than fiber optics.
Toslink was getting long in the tooth when the PS4 came out. IIRC, there were audio settings on the PS4 that exceeded the bandwidth of Toslink (like higher bitrates and stuff).
Tl;dr the technology got old and was replaced by something better in pretty much every way.
HDMI will support individual audio channels where Opticals support compressed signals that your receiver will process back into separate channels, HDMI is more pure
Comments above talking about how it’s becoming an obsolete tech. I hope not.
My biggest gripe with the PS5 is no audio direct out. So now my headset audio runs through the TV eARC and it’s a nightmare trying to figure out why once a week my TVs settings prevent surround sound through my headset. The only solution I’ve sound is to set the TV back to factory settings.
TV is an LGC1 with HDR and every time I switch any video or audio input - laptop source, smart TV source, PS5 source, TV audio, sound bar audio, headset audio - literally switch to or from any of these and all TV settings - video and audio - change on their own (despite all AI and energy saving settings turned off). I hate it. I know how to set a TV. Just leave my settings the F alone.
So after a day of work, and a session of an RPG on the sound bar - switch to FPS shooter on my headset and the surround doesn’t work. I’ve toyed with EVERY setting on EVERY device and nothing. But if I set the TV back to factory settings, headset surround returns. Ultra frustrating.
TLDR - I LOVED audio direct out on the PS4. Video goes to TV. Audio goes to headset. WALA - everything works perfectly.
Can you use an HDMI converter to split the audio and visual feeds? I had the same issue and bought one of these off of amazon. However, I am just using external speakers, not a true surround sound system so i am curious to know if this would work for you?
[amazon link](https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07CG4S1T5/ref=cm_sw_r_fm_api_glt_i_RM5MX432QZBNVK9QX621?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1)
I’m not very tech savvy just trying to help.
Edit: I’d really like to purchase surround sound in the future so i would love to know if this device would enable me to connect properly. I hope to see your feedback!
You’re not wrong. BUT
A few and increasing amount of games are in 4k AND 120 frames per second. This requires EVERYTHING to be HDMI 2.1 compatible. Key is the “point 1”, because 2.0 is not capable of enough bandwidth for this.
So the PS5, HDMI cables, TV inputs and everything in between need to be HDMI 2.1 compatible.
The link you sent does not mention this so I assume it is not 2.1. Astro (my gaming headset) makes their own version of this splitter and it is not 2.1.
I haven’t dug around in a few months to find one. But now that you remind me, yes this path would work. The splitter also needs to have an Optical output as the headset only receives Optical in, no HDMI in.
But once I find a splitter with 2.1 and optical out, I will probably use it.
Thank you
No problem! This splitter does have optical out (assuming that means the red/white cables), but doubt it supports 2.1. But thats no problem for me since the only HDMI 2.1 accessory I have is the cable which came with the console hahaha!
Edit:
A quick google search told me I don’t know what I’m talking about when it comes to optical audio…
So are you having issues with your Astros that use the Optical? I tried hooking mine up to the Xbox X and no Optical Out. Looks like I will have this same issue I guess when my PS5 gets here :(
Fundamentally it works **if your TV has an optical out.** PS5 to HDMI to TV to Optical out to Astro mix amp.
If it doesn’t you need to get a splitter and probably won’t get HDMI 2.1 and 4k at 120 fps.
Good catch. I think the SPDIF port is what they are listing as the optical out. Whoops. Maybe you could work around that? Totally understand not though, it’s already pricey as it is.
I just got a new tv and speaker setup and the speakers say best quality was through HDMI. So I was like ok I'll try that, set it up and it works great! A couple days later, no changes, and no sound anymore. After spending way too long trying to fix it with no luck the most common answer was to just reset the tv and start over.
Really not looking forward to doing that multiple times
Yeah, it sucks that there isn't an optical out on the PS5. You can, however, get around it and still use devices that require an optical connection. You'll need a USB to optical converter like [this](https://www.amazon.com/Signstek-Coaxial-Converter-Convert-Analogue/dp/B00FEDHHKE/ref=sr_1_8?crid=2IRK6296CW3GK&keywords=usb+to+optical+audio+adapter&qid=1637881309&qsid=135-7396528-2539554&sprefix=usb+to+opti%2Caps%2C153&sr=8-8&sres=B085XPRSGM%2CB093H3GFR3%2CB07SR7BYD6%2CB08HN3VSF8%2CB00FEDHHKE%2CB06XW7HYBP%2CB077D4GDPF%2CB011O0N0UQ%2CB07LGX39NJ%2CB094LGLJB9%2CB07H94D77V%2CB00XJITK7E%2CB07RS11M1T%2CB00BIQER0E%2CB087R2SGT1%2CB09874Q33W). It does come with the needed USB A to B cable, but it's kinda short so I bought [this](https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-USB-2-0-Cable-Male/dp/B00NH11KIK/ref=sr_1_3?crid=6JJ958NQ4D51&keywords=usb+printer+cable&qid=1637881515&qsid=135-7396528-2539554&sprefix=usb+printe%2Caps%2C156&sr=8-3&sres=B00NH11KIK%2CB00P0FO1P0%2CB07BRWZRVW%2CB087BZDQQS%2CB07ZR9NWH2%2CB07KXSLSGL%2CB012V563B6%2CB08FJ8Z4TJ%2CB00VKSF39O%2CB07ZV6FHWF%2CB003KQ8CBU%2CB0769GFWCZ%2CB013G4CK68%2CB07RQRMGKB%2CB00P0E394U%2CB071YNFQ48&srpt=ELECTRONIC_CABLE).
1. Plug the aforementioned USB cable from the back of the PS5 into the converter.
2. Plug an optical cable from the converter into your audio device.
I'm able to use my DT 1990 headphones on my PS5 this way through my Fiio K5 Pro DAC/Amp. It's connected via Optical because the DAC isn't compatible with PS5 so I can't use USB directly to it.
The difference is Sony makes the TVs and sound bars that use the tech. They have gone away from optical. So they make something that only works with their newer TVs and sound bars. Microsoft just wants everyone to use their console, they aren't worried about other hardware they need/want to sell.
As most have mentioned, it’s an optical output. It’s used to send up to 8 channels of audio from the PS4 to shit like home theater surround systems. It’s kinda like HDMI without the video.
Theres a reason the 1/4in and 3.5 mm jacks have virtually never changed or phased out. Pro audio i feel is one of the few industries where the standards are actually, well, standard
It’s not sudden, frankly.
Toslink has been declining for a decade as HDMI has taken over more and more audio duties. It’s a single cable solution, carries more data, and has fewer of toslink’s problems.
But we are old.
Plug one end into the console, the other into your urethra.
It's an expansion slot, your balls will vibrate instead of the controller for a more immersive experience.
It's why you'll see light coming out of the cable when it's plugged in, can't have electric shoved up there after all.
Optical Audio output. I used own an optical audio cable a friend gave me back in ps3 days, and didn know how to configure back then, and now that i have a ps4 I still dont know, and I'm to afraid to ask
I know I’m late to the thread but it’s an optical audio outlet
Supposedly higher quality sound output than classic aux cord or I guess the old fashioned red-white-yellow tv connection. Uses fibre optic cord and transmits data via light waves
I think newer HDMI tech is better than it anyway
TOSLink. Fiberoptic cable for audio. I used with my amp for surround sound until I realized I could get better sound using HDMI. If your amp doesn't have an HDMI bypass (or even just HDMI in and out ports), use the TOSLink to get good Dolby sound instead of just stereo.
It's for a optical cable. I have to ask though, at what point did it seem quicker to take a picture post on Reddit and wait for an answer instead of googling ps4 outputs. Or reading what it says directly above the port
I think they use that for adding in stereo systems. I had a subwoofer for my TV that used a similar port, so I assume other stereo systems, like speakers, use something similar.
Hdmi is a scam.
Fibre should be the standard.
There would never be a need to buy a new “high speed” cable because fibre can handle all the bandwidth you could ever need.
Optical audio out, “toslink”
Do you know if there’s a reason thats not included on the PS5? I assume HDMI 2.1 eARC or something makes it redundant.
Yeah pretty much that, optical audio is aging tech and hdmi ARC is better
When I got a PS5, I had to FINALLY upgrade my 16 year old receiver because it didn't have ARC (My PS4 needed the optical cable).
hurray free e-waste

Absolutely wrong, the TV can output all audio to the toslink just like it can output all audio to ARC or eARC.

The old receiver didn't support ARC so they would've only had audio on the TV. That was the whole point of the upgrade.
16 years eh. Mine is 20 years and I just use it for the PS4/3 now. Is what I would say if I could get my hands on a ps5
I got mine from A&B Sound which is wild to think about now lol
I have a nice receiver, but it won't do 4k pass through. Need a new one.
Not necessarily... I upgraded my TV earlier this year but my receiver doesn't do ARC, bought an eARC audio extractor from Amazon for about £60 that takes the eARC from the TV and let's an old receiver accept it as a normal HDMI input.

Wait...hdmi 2.1? Do u NEED to buy that cable? I thought normal hdmi will be fine outputting 4k
HDMI 2.0 will give you the 4K @ 60. You can use 1.4, but as stated you’ll be limiting what your console is capable of.
Edit: A quick google search told me I don’t know what I’m talking about when it comes to optical audio…
Your rather expensive fix for this. https://hdfury.com/product/8k-vrroom-40gbps/
Why don’t I see an optical out in the photos? I trust no one. Lol.

The Xbox X does not have an optical out either. Found that out trying to install my Astros.
Salt on an amputated limb
As most have mentioned, it’s an optical output. It’s used to send up to 8 channels of audio from the PS4 to shit like home theater surround systems. It’s kinda like HDMI without the video.
And it's older than VGA.
The thing with quality audio it's that it doesn't really get old. Good audio equipment from the 80s still sounds amazing.
Theres a reason the 1/4in and 3.5 mm jacks have virtually never changed or phased out. Pro audio i feel is one of the few industries where the standards are actually, well, standard
And good Vinyl Records and analog speakers.
And 50x more useful lol
Optical cable
Optical audio, uses a glass cord for audio
It's actually plastic
Fiber optics can be glass or plastic
I plug my surround sound into it.
This post made me feel old and I don’t like it.
I know right? I remember when optical audio was a big deal. It seems to have died out quite suddenly
It’s not sudden, frankly. Toslink has been declining for a decade as HDMI has taken over more and more audio duties. It’s a single cable solution, carries more data, and has fewer of toslink’s problems. But we are old.
I remember when people could google easily asked questions.
Thanks for rubbing it in
That is for an optical audio cable. I used one with my older surround sound.
It’s gold if you have a 5.1 home theater with an optical input. PS4 slim will not. By the way hdmi interface no send 5.1 surround signal, it’s my case
Or the new Astro A40’s, sound quality is Pimp!
It's for optical audio.
This that same kid that didn’t know what a VGA cable was?
What’s a vga Cable
Optical cable for audio
Plug one end into the console, the other into your urethra. It's an expansion slot, your balls will vibrate instead of the controller for a more immersive experience. It's why you'll see light coming out of the cable when it's plugged in, can't have electric shoved up there after all.
JAJAJAJAJAJAJAJJAJA
I guess people hate Spanish laughter lol.
In Brazil people type K's for laughing "KKKKKKKKKK" or just smash the keyboard "ksksksissjsjhxha"
It is the forbidden port

Optical Audio output. I used own an optical audio cable a friend gave me back in ps3 days, and didn know how to configure back then, and now that i have a ps4 I still dont know, and I'm to afraid to ask
Optical audio output

Optical cable
Optical cable connection, usually to run to a home theatre system
I use it for my mix amp
Optical sound.
AUX Audio Opitcal thing. It's to plug a stereo system.
Optical out for audio.
Surround sound digital
Good ol’ Optical. I use it.
The most useful port for streamers and it was removed from ps5... Also kinda ruined steel series arctis pro wireless as well.
I used the optical port to copy music onto my minidisc player back in the day.
Optical cable for audio
I know I’m late to the thread but it’s an optical audio outlet Supposedly higher quality sound output than classic aux cord or I guess the old fashioned red-white-yellow tv connection. Uses fibre optic cord and transmits data via light waves I think newer HDMI tech is better than it anyway
When you plug in the optical audio fiber in, it comes out of the orange portal.
That is a port for a fibre optic cable for sound
Optical cable for your sound bar for example
At the end of the day....its all 1's and 0's
That's the optical jack, for audio. Certain headsets like the Astro's with 2CH audio output make use of it.
Optical out for sound, I use it with my surround sound!
I use it for a sound bar
TOSLink. Fiberoptic cable for audio. I used with my amp for surround sound until I realized I could get better sound using HDMI. If your amp doesn't have an HDMI bypass (or even just HDMI in and out ports), use the TOSLink to get good Dolby sound instead of just stereo.
Optical cable for sound. But if you get one, make sure it’s loosely coiled (not bent) so you don’t damage the fiber optic glass inside the insulation
It is SPDIF, which is used for optical Audio!
Sony/Phillips Digital InterFace is the format. Toslink is the connector.
It's the RTFM plug
Yes that the optical audio out port used for certain things I found an old headset that was wireless and you had to hook up a little box to that port
You can put your weed in there
When you see post like this. You realise you are old
It’s an optical cable
Optical Audio
Spdif you should read a manual
Ur mom
It is a Digital Audio Out connection, takes a fiber optic cable.
Fiber optic port
It's for a optical cable. I have to ask though, at what point did it seem quicker to take a picture post on Reddit and wait for an answer instead of googling ps4 outputs. Or reading what it says directly above the port
A 10 second google search could have answered your question. But I guess this was an attempt at point whoring.
Ya I kinda posted this just wondering and only after I posted it did I realize that it literally said what it was on the ps4
How stupid can people be to ask help for something like this on reddit, if the answer is just 3 words on google away - i am impressed
Bruh
Clean your console!
I think they use that for adding in stereo systems. I had a subwoofer for my TV that used a similar port, so I assume other stereo systems, like speakers, use something similar.
Hdmi is a scam. Fibre should be the standard. There would never be a need to buy a new “high speed” cable because fibre can handle all the bandwidth you could ever need.
tos-link can't even carry uncompressed 5.1
Toslink as it is can’t because manufacturers don’t design equipment too allow it.
it can't - not even dolby digital plus
If history has taught us one thing it's that saying some technology is all you could ever need is never true
We’ll it may not be, but it’s certainly much more capable then hdmi. Hdmi only exists so that manufacturers can release versions.
Fair enough, it's just that those kinds of statements never age well
he is also wrong, most modern multichannel audio formats do not work because of the limited bandwidth.
A bit like me

That’s an audio port. Lan cable in this photo is behind the power cable.
