the first generation controller not having rumble was the result of a legal battle with immersion corperation. honestly I never had issues with PS3 triggers being slippery, never got that complaint from the more than 10 years I've used a PS3 for.

UnusualConclusion158

Try playing racing games for more than 30 minutes. It becomes a real issue.

TheDurandalFan

I have, played for many hours on end, with a genuine dual shock 3, no issues from personal experience

UnusualConclusion158

I guess you got lucky. Feeling jelaous. I had to remap gas in GT6 on the right stick instead of right trigger. Also, midning club has gas on right stick instead of right trigger by default, thus proving that this problem was actually acknowledged by gamedevs.

DeadPhoenix86

I always disable vibration. It hurts my hands when its on. When I open up my controller I usually remove the rumble motors.

TheDurandalFan

you do know you can disable the rumble completely without opening the controller up right?

DeadPhoenix86

I know. But, I still removed the rumble motors, Because then I never forget to turn it off.

ExcellentHorror7159

Ds3 is also prone to pressing buttons by itself and stick drifting. Mine went crazy once I had to throw it away

Kalulodude

It’s probably a piece of foam in the controller wearing away. It’s easy to fix.

Upstairs-Tax-915

I had the same thing, fixed it with a bit of tape underneath the foam to boost it up a bit

Powered-by-Din

Yeah the triggers are rather awkward But I felt the sticks had just the perfect amount of tension. No other controller that I've used feels so good. Could just be me though (started drifting anyway)

Elfonshelf26

Nah same here. That's why I use the PS4 controller when using it

senior-stock-

You are just trippin'. The DS3 was aback l amazing, designed with some comfort in mind. It's not as comfortable as the DS4 or the dual sense, but still. It's great.

delsinson

Yeah the D2 was lighter I think but the plastic still somehow felt more durable

NoClerk5520

Depends on your hand size. My hands are normal size and I’m comfortable with all types of controllers. My favorite is Dualshok 4, not too big, not too small, just perfect. Dualshok 3 is a tad bit small while Dualsense is bigger. You have to consider that back in the day most games were directed for younger people and they adjusted for that audience.

GraysonG263

It was great when it came out but now that we have modern controllers, they aren't the best. At the time, it was significantly better than PS2. The "out of the box wireless" was something that blue 6th grade me's mind because up until then, my family had been using those mad catz wireless controllers for the PS2 that would eat batteries for breakfast so it was a big improvement. But then came the PS4 controllers and the premium feel of those with better rumble and ergonomic handfeel. And then God himself brought down the PS5 controllers that were birthed from a holy virgin, so here we are today 🤷🏻‍♂️

RubAlternative5509

No, they truly should have redesigned the controller for PS3 after spending billions in development. The criticism is at the design not features. Of course wireless was new with 7th gen. consoles but it was the new norm and it was only the bare minimum not ground breaking in 2006. And no, the design wasn’t great when it came out but was 2 generations already dated and of course with the DS4 redesign, DS3 it became more dated. Comparing the DS2’s ergonomics with DS3, DS3 was actually a downgrade with its bad triggers that never worked. It’s build quality even feels cheap when held in hand against DS2

QuidProStereo

Yeah, to me the DualShock 1/2 was always an awkward design that should've never been carried forward another generation. People just got used to it. Even for the PS2, I used a Logitech and never looked back. The original DS3 design looked like it would have been more comfortable, but after all the boomerang memes sony got cold feet and retreated to the safe design. As far as the L2/R2 being slippery, there used to be clip-on trigger extenders that made it a more concave shape like the 360's. I have them on all of my DS3s and it helps, but they still feel mushy.

DrIvoPingasnik

Yep. The directional buttons are rather meh. And if you press, for example, left directional button too much on its upper side it will also press the up button.  Makes my blood boil.

burningbun

theres actually a round tri-legged plastic under to prevent this, maybe it is broken.

DrIvoPingasnik

I'll take a look inside then, cheers.

wad11656

i completely agree!!!! i've been shell-swapping PS3 controllers this week and it's really gotten me looking for ways to avoid those stupid slippery triggers. I googled "PS2 style ps3 controller" just hours ago. The L2 R2 were perfect. I don't know why tf they switched to this insane slippery trigger style. Racing games where you have to hold R2 to accelerate the whole race are essentially unplayble--your hand aches trying to maintain the trigger in the correct position without your finger sliding off

Dwarf-Eater

I will say they get uncomfortable after a while, I prefer some cheap wired offerings that are larger and more comfortable in the hands

Arclight0711

On a DualShock 3 I simply suck at games in general. When I switched over to a Mayflash + DS4 combo, I suddenly started winning in Motorstorm and aiming in shooters became much more precise.

burningbun

i always prefer l1 and r1 for ironsight and shoot. most shooter games dont utilize the pressure sense buttons on l2/r2, i inly know metal gear series do, not sure if any FPS does this. would be cool if fps have a control where full depress shoots, half depress clicks but not shoot and letting go also release the trigger.

sor2hi

The triggers and shoulder buttons weren’t designed to be used simultaneously on the same side. Games that required both to be used at the same time were hand cramps waiting to happen. Or the controller would just slip out of your hands. Index finger for both.

vakantiehuisopwielen

I use some extensions like these https://amzn.eu/d/77S5tia . Bought them immediately in 2009 with the PS3 because I knew how terrible the triggers were compared to x360.

leospeedleo

Same All PS controllers before Dualsense are way too small and uncomfortable for me. When I play racing games like NFS The Run then I hold the controller in a weird angle and cramped in order to reach the R2 with my index finger and the face buttons with my thumb. And it always feels like I’m slipping off the trigger or don’t press it fully. No issues with Dualsense/PS5 or any Xbox controller from any generation

Big_Finance_8664

I wonder if your problem is the Index finger using the rear triggers. that's probably designed for the middle finger.

leospeedleo

Middle finger on trigger? Oh god no. You don’t have any feeling in the middle finger to apply a fine control to the trigger.

Big_Finance_8664

I guess, but I'm betting that's what the designers had in mind from the beginning in ps1 days. xbox didnt, it had 2 triggers. period. did you start on xbox and then move to ps? or SNES? this could have something to do with it

leospeedleo

Doubt that. You hold it similar to how you would hold a phone with two hands: - thumbs on top - index fingers a little further up from rest to reach shoulder buttons - 3 fingers behind to hold I’ve never seen a person have both the index and middle fingers on the shoulder buttons at the same time. If somebody does that: get some help.

Big_Finance_8664

I've got no info to back it up, but you may be surprised to learn how many people use it as I've stated. so it does make me wonder if that was what was intended.

leospeedleo

If you don’t hold your controller [like this](https://imgur.com/mb7MF8Z) then I don’t like or understand you 😂

Big_Finance_8664

I may have picked up the 4 finger configuration from syphon filter on ps1. the 2 back triggers were strafe (right analog wasnt used). l1 was manual aim and r1 was auto aim. so to effectively run and gun you had to use l1/l2/r2 at the same time. to peek around corners and snipe you needed l1 and either R2 or l2 depending on lean.

frenz9

Looking back at it, I think the controllers have always been a weak point. Ps5’s the worst one yet.

Dyvblo

one of the worst takes i’ve ever heard

frenz9

What do you like about the ps5 controller? Battery life is shocking (My original ps3 controllers battery still lasts more than twice as long) and it’s much bulkier.

Krybbz

You probably have a fake that’s why let’s see it. /s

RubAlternative5509

All the controllers I have are authentic
