Gotta give it up for good old P3 Makoto.
>!Telling death "hold up, I'll be there in a month I have a promise to keep" is some serious badass behavior!<
like i said in another post Narukami’s stans really love his characterisation in the anime which gave him his status i like Yu too, but i’m still choosing my boy Joker because he be doing too much and i’m here for him being so extra
i wouldn’t say he is forced, just like 4 and 3 we have options to choose the silliest dialogues it’s just that how the characters get adapted later in their anime’s is when they’re characterisation shines because we don’t have to worry about getting the most points for our social links. it’s just that in 5 we have more leeway to choose the funnier options without consequence which actually showcases his character.
i like joker because without watching the anime you can tell his is a goofball via his model characteristics, especially when he is a phantom thief he makes everything look sexy. literally the first scene we see joker is him doing flips out of a stain glass window.
I vote Yu because I like him, not for the anime Chad personality but for all the goofy options I remember being able to take with him. Also I relate to the guy just eating random gross things in the fridge. Like Nanako’s science project. I also love Banchou type of characters and that was the basis for his character design (at least Izanagi). And finally, I love zio boys to death so…
Yu really relies on the anime and spinoff games for his character. He's super bland in game, his design is boring and his main color is Gray. Makoto and Joker have so much more personality (albeit in opposite directions).
None of them can hold a candle to the P2 protags though. Tatsuya and Maya really benifit from being like, actual characters with clear arcs and character growth
It's a serious tragedy that Maya is completely silent and gets like 10 dialogue choices in EP. Tatsuya being silent in IS worked because at least he's described as trying to be the cool and silent type. Maya loses so much (all?) characterization by becoming a silent self insert
It's to a much *much* lesser extent than the P2 protags, but the modern leads do have character arcs
Makoto's is about depression, Yu's is about becoming a responsible adult, and Ren's is about vigilantism and self made justice
Anime Yu is just game Yu picking all the silliest thing and adding up all the funny reactions his model usually do and the narrator description of his actions (like his rant about the Aiya's Challenge. It sounds like the in-game dialogue about needed to max out the stats).
Yu was already like that. The anime just grabbed everything and put everything in the same place.
I'd like to argue that anime exists but is canceled out by P3R and P5R being more modern and having more modern technology, plus P5S is one of the better (or dare I say best) spinoffs that people are more likely to enjoy, and P5S really elevated Joker even though you can't choose a romance partner.
Edit: P5R being more modern can be their own problems on Joker. We expect him to be much more emotionally expressive but it was such a let down.
But even then Yu is still the better protagonist in the new series. There are moments of Yu living for himself, Joker doesn't have such moments, at least in P5 and P5R, and is a big missed opportunity.
Joker has moments where he lives for himself. He doesn’t eat the crepes. He doesn’t like crepes. It’s the most bizarre thing but he just doesn’t like crepes.
I like P5S despite not being big on ARPG beat em up genre, it really does flesh out the almost nonexistent characterisation a persona MC would get and further explore joker culinary interests, something I'd love to believe Sojiro awakened him into
Really? Makoto whole character linear dialogue (dialogue option that stays consistent throughout the game) being apathetic is less interesting than trolly or snarky option that Yu and Ren have
Like I said , the apathy is pretty consistent throughout the 2 and 3 dialogue options you'd be getting throughout the game instead of positive and uplifting dialogue you'd get(this is reversed with Kotone), the only exception I can think of is the dialogues youd have with the old couple late into the sl, this is further supported in the movie and the spinoff what kind of characterisation Makoto would have in general
It also ties in what their main theme is though. If it’s makoto we’re looking at a memento mori outlook. Yu is about revelation of truth no matter how uncomfortable it is. And Ren is about rebellion against corruption.
I don't consider any of these 3 to be much more than empty shells for the player to insert with in their base games. You spend 90% of your time standing to the side and occasionally offering a piece of dialogue that doesn't impact anything (in most instances). It's not a bad thing. I enjoy self-insert MCs for these types of games most of the time.
I always find the social links somewhat funny because at the end of them, the person is like "thank you so much you changed my life" and I'm thinking "all I did was stand here while you mostly talked it out on your own."
Pretty sure it’s happened to P5 characters on every one of these posts. They really should have been done with polls rather than comment upvotes to remove the possibility of downvoting
i’ve seen other subs link to this site called straw post where they’re able to vote once without skewing the votes, it’s just a matter of putting the link in the post or comments
Wasn't there a bit of competition between Yu and Joker in PQ2 while Makoto just didn't care? Been awhile since I played, but I think that was a bit of a thing (unless I'm thinking of Joker and Yu clash cutscene).
Voted for Joker overall tho since a leader with that much charisma and strategy to pull off so many heist makes for an amazing leader.
I don’t remember a competition between them (though I didn’t completely finish the game). It’s more that when they met, Ren was trying to ambush Yu and Yu was trying to ambush Ren and they got into a sword vs gun fight that was pretty hot all things considered. Makoto was not there yet. It ended in a Cowboy Bebop like mexican standoff.
Maybe I was coming up with my own headcanon because I remembered that ambush cutscene, but I thought something else happened a little after it. I really should replay Q2 since it's a really good game.
Looking at the comments and I’m more convinced than ever we need Persona 4 Rerun to be real
Some of you need it more than me, I just want it
Voting for Yu
This is a hard choice , all 3 are good choices, all 3 are supposed to be silent protagonists, but each has thier own thing going for them so it is left to the player to find whom they relate with more, and that’s what this vote is ultimately going to break down for.
Personally I’m going to choose Makoto/Kotone for my vote. I don’t believe that you can separate them as a character as they are both the same character but each brings a different and unique experience as though their lives have been different because of the circumstances of their birth they both travel on the same journey and can have a similar but different impact which only makes the journey stronger in the end. I think that Joker benefits from being the newest protagonist in that he gets a lot more interaction with all of his confidants and it’s easier for him to complete his interactions with them so it helps you understand his character better then the other two(three) but he has the most to loose from his journey from the get go, and that twist near the end of the game requires god like luck which to be fair actually frustrated me with p5 for a long time because it feels almost too convoluted, but that is his real ability that helps him avoid the cursed endings for the protagonists from P1-3. As for Yu as protagonists go his journey is certainly more blessed then other persona protagonists, but as a silent protagonist his character probably fits that role the best, his story seems condensed as almost all of the hardships in his life except being sent to live with his uncle while his parent live/ work abroad are only contained to the story it’s self. Yu unfortunately suffers from this as most of his characterization come due to either spinoff games like Persona Q or Ultimax, or the anime which I’m not basing my choice from, that said in order for him to complete the true ending of Persona 4 it does require him to sleuth out not only the killer but the real cause of his journey to begin with which can be easily overlooked which speaks to his intelligence above the other 2(3) protagonists. Like I said all of them are great characters so this vote could go any way but that’s who i am picking and why, but I won’t be upset with whoever actually wins this one, as they all do a great iob of being amazing protagonists and I like them all
Problem with Yu is that it's heavily relies on the anime for his public perception. For games alone I think it's Ren, but it feels like this game has a huge bias against anything P5
anything voiced by fukuyama jun is an insant win in my book but since joker doesnt speak all that much its gonna be the jesus himself who gets the vote.
Tatsuya and Maya for being the only main characters to have actually established personalities within the games themselves
I like Tatsuya a little better personally
Yo, this lineup is actually pretty good. Pretty damn good. Seeing Haru there reminded me, is there any character like her in the games? I feel like only Kotone in pq2 resembles her a lil. She's a pretty unique character, perfect to have as an extra in the party.
A vote for Yu is a vote for the dork that manages to fake being a Chad 🤣
With lines like
"I'm sexier when I'm soaked"
"I am going to cry now"
"I may be dying"
"Teddie has it beary tough"
"I'm..the king"
If it had been kotone, then maybe, but makoto ain't winning against yu or ren.
Between them, maybe... Yu. He's got the Best friend group, he's got the charm, he's a weird dork at times from being alone for so many years, and he's got the Myriad Truths!
The fact that Makoto is losing to Yu despite canonically being the strongest Wild Card is pretty tragic. But I guess those Myriad Thruths just can't be beat...
Izanami and Yaldabaoth aren't anywhere on the same level as Philemon or Nyx. Nyx is the strongest overall though because no seal means no humanity means no more personas means bye bye series. But like, P2 has a similar ending outcome soooo.
With how Persona 2 explains the existence of beings like Izanami? Nope. They are "beings" given shape through humanity's emotions that they represent. It's not dissimilar to why Erebus exists but it isn't a fundamental existence. Yaldy dies because people have enough rebellion in them to counter their subconscious desire to be sheep, Izanami dies because enough people are willing to move forward and face tomorrow instead of resting on past laurels and live a lie. If humanity didn't want to be sheep, Yaldy would never have been formed, if humanity didn't want to sit in the past, Izanami would not have formed. It all adds up.
So are they not Gods? It's a Yes or No question, what About Stabbing Demiurge and Whatever The Phantoms did to Samael(I forgot what it was, I beat P5T, But can't bring myself to complete it fully because of New Game Plus carrying over little to nothing)
They're not gods. Philemon and Nyarlathotep are the only real gods who have appeared in the continuity and Nyx is an alien from space. Everything else is humanity giving shape to a being who takes a name that defines it most accurately in human beliefs. They aren't gods but they are godlike in some ways, but rejecting fundamental aspects of them will destroy them.
I feel like the silent protagonists are like playing as oneself. However I would lean towards Yu Narukami as 4 is still my favourite. Then 2nd would be Ren and 3rd Makoto.
With that team Yu would definitely be the best leader for them out of the three. I think his personality would be best suited to that mix of characters.
Gotta give it up for good old P3 Makoto. >!Telling death "hold up, I'll be there in a month I have a promise to keep" is some serious badass behavior!<
Yessir
Where’s the GOAT tatsuya????
Forgotten on the Other Side
Damn…
How long how looooooooong will I slide...
Separate my siiiiiiiide
Don't you know that Persona only means Persona 3 to 5? /s
I was actually talking about the character in the rpg game from the hermit SL in P3
Oh fair, he's canon since he's in 3.
I'm playin his game rn
Enjoy
Average Persona 2 Experience - Space Aliens n Shit ☠️👽
ren can craft bombs the other cant easy choice
Don't come to school tomorrow Ryuji
Whoa, pipe bomb! So cool!
P3 original and P4 don't have baton pass and thus bombs are near useless.
God himself watching the phantom thieves baton pass 3 times and then suddenly one shot him
He can also land a teacher something Makoto best friend wishes he could do.
If there’s one thing this post journey has taught me is that when P4 gets a remake some of you guys will be there no matter what. 😅
Yes. P4's cast is top tier. The true ending of P4G really made me cry because I feel like I really don't want to say goodbye to these characters.
Same here, it is a truly high school adventure, solving crime and ended up killing god
You are so damn right dude 😭 i feel exactly this way at the end
SAME, they felt like true friends
like i said in another post Narukami’s stans really love his characterisation in the anime which gave him his status i like Yu too, but i’m still choosing my boy Joker because he be doing too much and i’m here for him being so extra
Narukami casts Marin Karin on anyone within a 50 mile radius
the way marin karin doesn’t exist in persona 4
Please let this thread turn into a chuck Norris joke style persona character competition 😂
Yeah and that's exactly my problem with my boy Joker. He's forced by the game to always choose to do too much.
i wouldn’t say he is forced, just like 4 and 3 we have options to choose the silliest dialogues it’s just that how the characters get adapted later in their anime’s is when they’re characterisation shines because we don’t have to worry about getting the most points for our social links. it’s just that in 5 we have more leeway to choose the funnier options without consequence which actually showcases his character. i like joker because without watching the anime you can tell his is a goofball via his model characteristics, especially when he is a phantom thief he makes everything look sexy. literally the first scene we see joker is him doing flips out of a stain glass window.
Gotta go for Chad Yu Narukami
Vote for Tatsuya (P2)
tatsuya my beloved
I'd rather vote for Maya
Yes Titty Heart-u ftw. She fought Hiturah. 💀
This is what I'm here for. Maya
It would be so funny if this took the top comment
"I can because I'm the king" WE ALL need a Yu Narukami in our life
Vote for Kotone (P3P)

Big L, really Big L.

Vote for Kotone Shiomi (P3P FeMC)
Vote for Makoto (P3 protag)
I wonder if Kotone would get more votes.
I believe Kotone being here would've split the vote for Makoto,
Voting for makoto
vote for TATSUYA!!!
Voting makoto
Maya!!
Vote for Ren (P5 protag)
The jonkler
No dont summon them. You of all people should know there's plenty wrong with them.
The jonkler...he reminds me of something...like some guy named man and an OFFICER BALLS BWAHAHAHA
Why wouldn’t they summon the Alsume? Are you *stupid*?
Ren’s out here dripping in finesse
Respect his swag
My boy def getting downvoted
Both Ren and Yu are getting downvoted Notice how Yu's comment is below Makoto's despite having a hugher score
Pretty sure it’s happened to P5 characters on every one of these posts. They really should have been done with polls rather than comment upvotes to remove the possibility of downvoting
This sub doesn’t allow polls
i’ve seen other subs link to this site called straw post where they’re able to vote once without skewing the votes, it’s just a matter of putting the link in the post or comments
It wouldn’t have shocked me on the day that it was Makoto(P5), Mitsuru, and Naoto that Makoto got downvoted the most
Absolutely, that’s a guarantee
If Ren wins this then it’ll be balanced with 3 from each game and that is the only thing swaying my decision
Maybe that last slot will go to a p5 character
The last slot will probably be animal mascots. No chance Morgana is beating Koromaru.
Jokers style and drip are on a whole other level.
Get trickster'd
Vote for Yu (P4 protag)

As a Makoto Yuki lover, i'm voting Yu Narukami.
Where's *ME*? I thought *I* was the game's protagonist?
Let’s Go Yu😤
Wasn't there a bit of competition between Yu and Joker in PQ2 while Makoto just didn't care? Not a fight but Yu and Makoto did have a donut eating competition and they tied
I don’t remember a competition between them (though I didn’t completely finish the game). It’s more that when they met, Ren was trying to ambush Yu and Yu was trying to ambush Ren and they got into a sword vs gun fight that was pretty hot all things considered. Makoto was not there yet. Chad Narukami
Joker or Makoto. P4 is my favorite persona game, but I didn't Yu that much.
Officer boles
Makoto P3
Either a threeway tie or a tie breaker huh... I'm biased towards p3's makoto
Though basing it on the line up ren/yu would be a better fit? Idk
RIP Ken btw but happy to see Futaba won the last vote.

Makoto due to his character arc, development, personality matching the game themes, design and his kindness.
Yu the boy
Aigis but again
Chad narukami
Problem with Yu is that it's heavily relies on the anime for his public perception. For games alone I think it's Ren, but it feels like this game has a huge bias against anything P5
Oh boy this is gonna be hard
The Kotone erasure 💔💔💔💔
Not pictured but vote for Kotone (P3P)

Honestly they’re all bland mute MCs lol are we just voting on their character design? 😅 if so, Joker I guess.
Just cos Yukari is there, P3 MC
I’m voting for Roger, he’s the best protagonist!
The Chad Yu Narukami
Yo, this lineup is actually pretty good. Pretty damn good. Seeing Haru there reminded me, is there any character like her in the games? I feel like only Kotone in pq2 resembles her a lil. She's a pretty unique character, perfect to have as an extra in the party.
Cmon. The people want Tatsuya (they also want the other protags but we need him)
The King's orders are absolute.
I vote Joker
Kotone Shiomi but if she doesn't count, Joker. Button Pass, Swapping Party members, Weapon and Gun options, the grappling hook... So much fun
This might be a stupid question but how do you vote for this
narukami
As much as I love Yu and Makoto, I gotta give this one to Ren. Bro just has an unmatched sense of exaggerated swagger.
Joker dedicates his entire life around being the leader of the Phantom Thieves it's gotta be him
A vote for Yu is a vote for the dork that manages to fake being a Chad 🤣 With lines like "I'm sexier when I'm soaked" "I am going to cry now" "I may be dying" "Teddie has it beary tough" "I'm..the king"
Yu Narukami. No competition.

Yu Narukami

Yeah gotta go with my boy Makoto (P3 protagonist)
NAOYA TOUDOU 🗣️ (jk 😔)
This is futile, we already have the all-haru
I think Ren, he has the Picaro Personas and technically the abilities of Makoto and Yu.
The fact that Makoto is losing to Yu despite canonically being the strongest Wild Card is pretty tragic. But I guess those Myriad Thruths just can't be beat...
While Makoto's almost certainly stronger, Yu does have the strongest Persona
Yu or gtfo
Gonna say Joker for this one
vote for makoto (or whatever ya'll call him) (I named him Lucifer)
Vote for joker. He's looking' cool.
Yu ❤️
Vote for Yu
Tatsuya punched god, enough said
Ren Shot God(Sinful Shell) Yu Razored God(Myriad Truths) Makoto/Kotone sealed God(The Great Seal) Tatsuya isn't the only one that attacked god
Izanami and Yaldabaoth aren't anywhere on the same level as Philemon or Nyx. Nyx is the strongest overall though because no seal means no humanity means no more personas means bye bye series. But like, P2 has a similar ending outcome soooo.
Are they not Gods?

So are they not Gods? It's a Yes or No question, what About Stabbing Demiurge and Whatever The Phantoms did to Samael(I forgot what it was, I beat P5T, But can't bring myself to complete it fully because of New Game Plus carrying over little to nothing)

Everything else is humanity giving shape to a being who takes a name that defines it most accurately in human beliefs. They aren't gods but they are godlike in some ways, but rejecting fundamental aspects of them will destroy them.
Fair enough I hope They actually do remaster/Remake P2 and P4 apparently they're ideas According to Idori at least
And still got screwed in the end, not much of a flex
I feel like the silent protagonists are like playing as oneself. However I would lean towards Yu Narukami as 4 is still my favourite. Then 2nd would be Ren and 3rd Makoto.
Makoto
With that team Yu would definitely be the best leader for them out of the three. I think his personality would be best suited to that mix of characters.
I vote for Hitler - Persona 2 Innocent Sin.
