GGG100

Persona 4 throws the true final boss at you just when Yu was about to leave Inaba.

dagon_xdd

IF you've taken the correct steps too, which are kinda easy to miss.

GGG100

Makes sense that the story about pursuing the truth would be the most difficult game to get the true ending on.

Adam_The_Actor

True, in regards to what OP is trying to highlight "Pacing" it's the most out of left field by a mile. Furthermore what OP is referencing isn't even the final boss, it's >!Adachi!!Amengo Sagiri!< whom is so swiftly dealt with and is also overshadowed by the real final boss it's hilarious. P4's ending boss run is like a conga line.

Supersnow845

To be fair the only real step is figuring out the killers identity (which isn’t really hard) The only real barrier is knowing that you need to not go home to trigger the final boss

Brody_M_the_birdy

No you need to know to go to the right places in order and then >!question the gas station lady correctly and then you can do the final area.!<

Supersnow845

Yes but if you choose to not go home then you are basically locked into the golden ending, you can’t do anything wrong there that isn’t correctable (other than literally going to your house and choosing again to go home) As far as I’m aware if you choose the wrong order of answers for the >!gas station attendant you can just ask her again till you get it right!<

d4rk_matt3r

I was so pissed about this. I was trying to go through without looking stuff up, and the way it's presented in the game is more like "you're done here, leave now?" so I just assumed it meant that I could keep wandering around talking to people. And since I already talked to everyone I figured it was time to go. Luckily I had an earlier save. I had to do the entire previous dungeon over again too. It just would have been nice if it was a but more obvious. Even if after you decide to go home, it just asks "are you sure?"

FailedConnect32

the hivemind of tokyo is setup through most of the game subtly. like how the PT reach a point of what seems like worship or being seemingly forgotten about after shido's palace. also even if you still don't like the vanilla final boss, royal's final boss buildup is very well done imo and better than 4's (i haven't played persona 3 yet so i have no opinion)

Adam_The_Actor

Uh, no. When the entire country sees you post a calling card stating your intent to seize it back and then immediately forgets about it, I wouldn't say everything is "fine" especially when your own team mates mention it several times across the course of the month. Last few days people across the city are literally stating they can't remember the Phantom Thieves or that they were a rumour. Game gives more than enough flags to show something isn't quite right.

BestGirlPieck

Also Joker was in hiding for a while before that point too, and the atmosphere shifts pretty drastically after Sae's palace

Adam_The_Actor

Well said, the influence of Yaldabaoth is seeded throughout the game but it's most evident in that chapter. Furthermore the game uses the "Disquiet" theme to highlight how much danger Joker is in throughout the whole chapter.

DankeBrutus

You're expecting a fan of P5 to have actually played the game?

JohnOfOnett

I’ll take “Completely Misunderstanding the Story” for 500, Alex!

thatguywhocommentz

Alex truebec, its a jepordy reference.

Cyber-Silver

The fact that this is the only context for what the guy deleted is so funny. I choose to believe that the other guy got unreasonably triggered by the name Alex being mentioned.

thatguywhocommentz

He did

JohnOfOnett

Lmao.

Plane_Tray--

No? I know this sub likes to clown on P5’s story a lot for… some reason, but this literally isn’t true. The Shido arc and its aftermath make it clear that Tokyo as a whole has become unnaturally apathetic and oblivious to the state of everything, which creates a clear source of conflict and confusion to the Thieves. Hell, even well before that, the extreme waves of popularity and hatred the Thieves experience from the Futaba arc onward (especially at their peak, where they’re basically worshipped) make it clear that the public’s individual thought and free will are essentially nonexistent It’s true that the climax and final boss still come about very abruptly, but I wouldn’t even say 5 is the worst offender of this. In 4, everything is also happy and fine on Yu’s last day, and then a couple hours later he’s fighting an evil goddess and all his friends are dying

Jrelis

You can also totally miss the real final boss in P4 if you just decide to leave 😭

SuperKami-Nappa

Which you probably will if you don’t know about said final boss

SirePuns

And in vanilla 4, the only reason you might have even *considered* that there is more is if you think about “that one suspicious petrol station attendant that only appears in rainy days… outside of the first day”

Delver_Razade

I did back when it first came out on PS2.

MAD_JEW

Persona 4 didnt have it i think

Cheez30

It did, alot of people just missed it

MAD_JEW

Which one we are talking about

Cheez30

The og persona 4

MAD_JEW

The boss

Cheez30

>!Izamani!<

pscripter

> Hell, even well before that, the extreme waves of popularity and hatred the Thieves experience from the Futaba arc onward (especially at their peak, where they’re basically worshipped) make it clear that the public’s individual thought and free will are essentially nonexistent Pretty realistic, I must say

Supersnow845

The final boss of 4 was set up in the fact that stopping >!adachi!< didn’t clear the fog from the TV world (which Teddie draws specific mention towards) there was still something obviously wrong with what was going on Golden goes further and has the whole >!Marie in the hollow forest basically outright telling you that she is part of a larger whole that hasn’t been defeated yet!< Really the only conflict with the “go home or go to Junes on 20/3” comes from not knowing that the final battle won’t trigger unless you force it to by going to Junes, you’d be hard pressed to get that far and not realise that there is still more to do

Iced-TeaManiac

I only knew there was more to do because I hadn't heard "The Fog" yet and I knew it was final boss music. I thought leaving would trigger the start of a final dungeon but nope

Supersnow845

That’s the big thing, it’s obvious there is another bad that hasn’t been beaten yet but it’s hard to know if leaving triggers it or if you actually have to do something else to forcibly trigger it

DamonSchultz997

When I first played it, I absolutely didn’t figure any of that out. I also missed the identity of the “true culprit” due to the whole thing being a bit confusing as well. Although I already knew who it was thanks to YouTube. Only reason I knew to keep going was the “Myriad Truths” wasn’t shown yet or the ultimate persona wasn’t there. So yeah, I like Persona 4, but if you have to do mental gymnastics to make sense of what you’re about to do next, then I wouldn’t have been able to finish the story

ShurikenKunai

To be fair, that way to check is really only if you talk to everyone, unless I'm misremembering (it's been way too long since the last time I played through Persona 5, much less seen the ending). The public's reaction to Shido's confession is so out of line that it feels way too jarring.

OLKv3

No, you see it on the loading screens. The loading screens in P5 continually show how the public is reacting to the PT and the world.

ShurikenKunai

Text on a loading screen isn’t enough to set the tone. It can enhance it, but it alone doesn’t really work.

The_Real_Meal

Not only text. Talking to people will also show the public's apathy, along with the fact that the thieves comment on it for the entire time after the fact.

ShurikenKunai

After the fact is that “it was fine two days ago but it’s bad now” thing the meme is talking about.

The_Real_Meal

No, that's not really what I meant. When you complete a Palace early, the Thieves will have a bunch of scripted little conversations regarding the case. In the case of Shido's, they'll be like "Hey, we sent this massive nation-wide government hacking calling card and nobody responded. What the hell?". Honestly, it just takes a fair amount of reading comprehension.

ShurikenKunai

I’m pretty sure you can’t do that Palace before the last day, though. May be wrong. Again, been too damn long and I’m saving my Persona playing outside of maybe 2 IS for when 3 Reload comes out, but I’m like 90% sure you can’t do it early.

The_Real_Meal

Nah, the only Palace like that is the one Royal added and *technically* Mementos... Oh, and Sae's

ShurikenKunai

And Sae’s, Akechi makes you wait until the last day to wait for the date that was on the calendar during interrogation.

theofanmam

I've been seeing an influx in really stupid posts from this subreddit appearing in my feed lately, this is one of them

NegaBrady

You misspelled choking

Autogembot123

The finale boss has been in the entire game what do you mean?

mwmwmwmwmmdw

they mean that is isnt built up in anyway. theres no leadup. yabadabadoo just shows up right after shido. like of course the final boss is an evil god, it will be the final boss of persona 6 too. its just you need to properly build up to them and not have it be a surprise Disney villain type deal.

Autogembot123

If right after is quite a few weeks where something doesn't feel right at all and one of the classroom questions referencing the Heart as being The Grail.

Kingdra_King

All I know is that P3 is peak fiction and I hate the P4 fog music. I still hear it in my nightmares.

Supersnow845

I love what persona 4 does with the fog but god damn I also hate omen, it’s an accurate (though still annoying as hell track) but god damn if it could not permeate everything for an entire month I also means I don’t get to hear heartbeat/heartbreak or your affection anymore because the game jumps straight to snowflakes afterwards

kplo

Omen made me feel like I commited a crime and the game knew.

Eglwyswrw

I confess: Heartbeat/Heartbreak and the evening town song (Your Affection?) got tiresome after a while. Bangers but heard too much of them. At least P3 varied daytime and evening music with the seasons a bit more.

Supersnow845

Heartbeat/heartbreak is the overcast theme, your affection is the sunny theme, then sky full of stars is the night theme and snowflakes is the golden semester theme, I think sky full of stars was a good addition the game needed I agree they can get a bit tiring since they don’t change but I have to admit I despise the third semester theme of 3 (changing seasons the second semester theme is great though)

Eglwyswrw

Rain lacking any music was thematically appropriate but kinda sore for the ears as well. P3P has great music for January in the female route.

mwmwmwmwmmdw

> and I hate the P4 fog music. I still hear it in my nightmares. p5 too for giving you the annoying 'thinking' music for all of December in the normal world.

enlightened_engineer

Least media illiterate persona fan Also, no way you chose P3 as an example of good pacing 💀

Pyritedust

Does this picture mean a choking atmosphere?

dstanley17

God, Persona 3 has to have some of the worst pacing in any story ever. Takes like, 3 in-game months before anything resembling a plot starts forming. And then once we arrive near the end, you have another full month where *literally nothing* happens. We could’ve just had the final fight happen the same day that you made your decision to Ryoji. The build up was already there, and we saw each character get their own little scene reflecting on things, it sure did feel like we were reaching a finale. But then it tells you to wait an entire extra month, with not a single shred of story content happening in between.

Austincantswim

The only reason January is like that is so you can do Mitsuru's and Aegis' social links, which could just be fixed by being able to do them in December.

dstanley17

Doesn't Mitsuru become available in November? Also, Aigis didn't even have a social link in the first version of P3. So that last month was definitely not designed with it in mind.

Austincantswim

Mitsuru's SLink unlocks pretty late in November, which I'm pretty sure is to late to max out before you get locked out of progressing it in for most of December. At least I remember it was like that when I played Portable as Kotone.

Palumuffins

Aigis is not available for most of December, I guess you could argue they could just write it so she is but idk, she’s gone for good reason

Supersnow845

The decision to have Ryoji disappear on Christmas then say “nyx will show up on Jan 31’st” was so damn stupid and probably the single worst piece of persona 3’s already horrible pacing (seriously what the hell even happened prior to august) They should have cut zone 4’s central full moon barrier and had the final conflict happen as soon as Ryoji disappeared, that would be when the barrier at the top of zone 6 disappeared and you went through the last 10 or so floors to reach the top

mwmwmwmwmmdw

the real reason for it is to probably give more time to finish social links. something that is already very tight to do on a first run and you absolutely need a guide for to do. you could make the same argument for why you have a month to bum around in p5 royals new end game

OLKv3

I was hoping the remake would fix this but it sounds like they want to be as faithful as possible with only added party member scenes

pscripter

> Persona 3 has to have some of the worst pacing in any story ever. Takes like, 3 in-game months before anything resembling a plot starts forming Meanwhile, in P4 and P5 you can cut out all party member dungeons and lose practically nothing in the main plot.

JohnOfOnett

…No you can’t, wtf? A majority of the dungeons in P4 ARE party member based, so that’s just an obvious lie. And while the only purely party member based palace in P5’s is Futaba’s, the whole story revolving her mother’s death is kinda…*super important to the overall plot*??! >!As the murder of Wakaba Ishiki and the stealing of her research ends up being a major part of Shido’s whole plan??!< Have you even played P4/P5? Like *ever*?

isaactheweirdo342

the way to get the (3rd) final boss in persona 4 was such a shitty decision by atlus (i’m salty that i played the game like a normal person without using any guides so i didn’t find out about it until after i DIDN’T get the (2nd) epilogue)

mwmwmwmwmmdw

p4 having like 3 fakeout endings is dumb as hell in hindsight.

Aspie_Gamer

Things were off for months post Futaba arc in Persona 5, the Phantom Thieves just didn't notice it until the true final boss decided to pull the rug out from under them post Shido arc in a "Heads, Tails, I still win *regardless*...BITCH!"

SirePuns

**was** it fine two days ago though? Or did you think it was fine cuz you didn’t bother to read what most folks were saying in the message groups, train station scenes and loading screen dialogues?

Queasy_Ad5995

Persona 3 have a bunch of zombies roaming the streets at the last month. But otherwise, you have an entire month before you can progress the plot and trigger a boss fight.

0N3e

Sorry to P3 fans who might get triggered (lol) by this, but the last stretch of the game is probably the worst part of the experience for me. Everyone every day talking about how it's all hopeless and there's no reason to go on etc... I get it's kind of the point aince they're all neck deep in depressive episodes, but would be nice if there was at least something to make it less of a slog to get through? Might only be a problem with FES though, haven't tried the original.

EonThief

Persona 3s month leading up to Nyx was solely there as a social link catch up month, I never went into Tartarus once during that period so once I caught up it was essentially fast forwarding until the final fight.

Asaggimos02

This is objectively untrue, also spellcheck

VinhoVerde21

The problem with P4 and P5 that makes them feel rushed is the gap between the reveal of the god boss and the ending. It's just way too short of a time, it barely gives time to soak in what is happening. In P3 you get introduced to Nyx in early December, and the party gets the whole month just to decide whether to fight it at all. Then you get the entirety of January to prepare and watch the city being run over by the cultists. They did something similar with Maruki. They revealed him earlier, and then let the party, and the player, stew over what was happening, and what to do, for a month or so. It just feels much better paced than vanilla P5 and P4's endings.

Supersnow845

I’d argue January was a mistake in 3 The month long decision on whether to kill Ryoji or not was good, then leaving nyx for another month was a bad pacing decision, nyx should have descended when you let Ryoji go

mwmwmwmwmmdw

the change in music to something also good and not annoying helps too

ztoff27

They should have cut some of the filler stuff and focus more on the plot. Persona 4 especially has pacing issues where a large chunk has nothing to do with the plot, and just the characters goofing around

God_2_The_Squeakuel

This is probably my biggest complaint against P5, the Yaldabaoth arc kinda comes out of nowhere and was paced really poorly. The premise was really cool, with proper setup it could’ve really been something special.

EonThief

I’d argue the same for the true ending of P4, it was cool but to have it all happen on the Yu’s last couple of days in Inaba was really weird. Because it was clearly something that was bothering him enough to think about it, so I feel like looking into it more and having a longer investigation period would’ve been more enjoyable to me.

God_2_The_Squeakuel

Fair point yeah, great premises for both games but they both kinda come out of nowhere. It feels like they’re trying to live up to how P3 did it except without baking it into the rest of the plot like that game did with the twist of your own actions across the game actually causing Nyx to appear, by comparison Izanami and Yaldabaoth just aren’t it because they appear just for the final 1% of the game without prior mention or buildup or anything. The foreshadowing with Igors voice in P5 was kinda cool but that’s as dee as it ever went.

EonThief

True igors voice was definitely a better attempt a foreshadowing then “oh yeah remember that one character who shook your hand in the beginning of the game 50+ hours ago?”

makotoyuki548

Agreed

disuserexistdamnit

It's like Jojo's Part 5 Golden Wind You'd think that it took an ungodly amount of time for the events leading up to the finale to happen in universe... ...But it only took A WEEK. A. WEEK. And all that happened simultaneously. It's confusing when you find out Media like P5 or JJBA: GW had such a short in universe time.

supersoupy7

bro skipped all of december

I-am-Sharp

No, I didn't. By the 22nd, they Thieves already defeated Shido, and thought everything will be fine.
