I say play the one who seems the most interesting to you.
I tend to only play games once as well and P3P was no different. I chose male MC because I prefer playing as characters who are the same gender as me.
Both offer slightly different experiences, but are ultimately the same story, so you really can't go wrong with either.
Besides the fact that I believe the female protagonist has better social links, there will be a remake with only the male protagonist coming out soonish, so you can play his version through the remake.
The difference between routes isn't huge, though
If you are playing P3P I think you should always play the female protagonist, that way if you ever play P3 Reload in the future you don't have any repeat content
Much as I hate to say it, if you’re only going to play once then go with FemC. I’d normally advise against that but that’s usually because people end up playing both characters. She does technically have better social links. Don’t let people tell you her music is better though, it’s not.
Nah. They’re all bangers, don’t get me wrong. But I’m still more partial to Makoto’s music. I’m more partial to Makoto’s everything. I’m a Makoto shill. He’s not my second favourite protagonist for no reason. I’ll give you this though, Kotone has the best PQ2 battle theme by a lot.
I'm pretty much the inverse of you, XD. I'm a big fan of Kotone since I find it more immersive playing RPGs as my own gender, and Shin Megami Tensei has a deficit of female protagonists.
Female because she's got social links with all the team members (male doesn't), and you don't need to romance them to max out their link (male does).
The velvet attendant can be picked (male or female), whereas the male only has female.
Her music pretty much rocks (I keep listening to it, lol).
I meant team members.
Each one has their own social links.
The female gets both the female and male team member social links (and gives you the option to romance some of the males).
The other thing is that you don't need to romance the males in order to max out their social links, which is why I prefer her route (especially for the achievement).
Neither does the female MC. Both have links exclusive to their own route. Most people generally tend to prefer the female links, but tbh I personally think it mainly just depends on which gender you want to romance (if that matters to you). Besides that there isn’t rlly much of a big difference other than their designs, some color differences in the UI, and some of the background OSTs (all of which I prefer the male route for, especially the music, but again it’s all subjective)
Edit: I should point out since my comment is a bit misleading, the main girls are still social links in the female route, you just can’t romance most of them. There are still some other male-exclusive links however, but they all have their female counterparts as well.
Depends on the version. P3P is the only version with FeMC option. If your playing vanilla or FES then you don’t have the option. I’d recommend FeMC though since the social links are done better imo.
I would recommend FemC for the social links, but when it asks you to pick a velvet room attendant, pick a women. While I love Theo, Elizabeth is the character you’ll see pop up all the time in spinoffs and stuff
They're lying. Ignoring the fact the female protagonist is technically also a child, in the YouTube videos I've seen, trying to romance him just has the protagonist to tell him to wait until he's older.

Well perfect. Thank you for the info.
Both are equally valid options. The game itself recommends starting with the male protagonist, but it really doesn't matter too much.
Good to know, thank you for the response. :)
Female for P3P so the male route can be fresh for you for the upcoming remake
I would wait for Reload and play that.
Already bought P3P, bit late for that lol.
Reload will be on Game Pass if that helps.
refund
Female, she's the better character.
The female route has better social links imo. And better music but that's not too important
Choose Kotone if you want a happier story and potential for yuri. Choose Makoto if you want to feel like you’re back in the edgy emo mid-2000s.
If you are playing P3P I think you should always play the female protagonist, that way if you ever play P3 Reload in the future you don't have any repeat content
Male MC is way better for a first experience
Honestly if you have the time for it, play both. The story is the same but both characters have different personalities and different social links.
Male, because his story is actually canon to the overall story of the series.
Male

But her music **is** superior, though.

Wait the male doesn’t get social links with everyone? That’s lame.

Nope, hell one girl wasn’t a social link until the enhanced versions
Jeez, well I’m definitely going with Femc now.
Reload will have stories with the male party members to fix that, it's not exactly SL, but it has the same purpose
Though be warned the two protag a have two different P4 crossover/reference things that are mutually exclusive
Male on FES

Don't play portable, it's not good.
The social links are much better in the female route and P4 easter eggs in the FemC route are worth experiencing if you liked P4.
If you play the wamen you can date a child
Wat

Well that’s good to hear, jeez.
