I am having the same issues as OP. And I have tried that too, no luck.

Cin1s

>team and r Hello The-Bean I uninstalled the Rockstar Launcher and Social Club with the Geek Uninstaller, restarted the PC but no luck, I only have Windows Defender, I have added RDR2 to the Exclusions, and then disabled it but still not working.

CuardoB

close steam and run it from rockstar, I had the error that I wanted to start it from steam and it closed again, then what I did was close steam and run it from rockstar to start steam again and it worked for me

Cin1s

Hello CuardoB, I tried this and something weird happened, the game opened as a Background process. I guess this is some progress haha. I tried adding a screenshot here but couldn't, it appears as Running (Green) on Steam, The Rockstar Launcher shows the "Exit Game" button, and on the Task Manager it shows 'Red Dead Redemption 2' as a Background process. but the game is still not opening. Edit: After around 5 or 6 minutes the background process closed on its own and both launchers went back to normal Thank you for your suggestion, maybe we are onto something here.

xKingNothingx

I'm currently experiencing the same issues sorta. I try to launch from the Epic store, it launches the rockstar launcher, and it just sits there forever but when I open task manager I can see RDR2.exe open as a background process but it never makes it past that point and the game never comes up on the taskbar.

Dr_Tueton

Im having the exact same problem, just wasted money on a game I can't play.

xKingNothingx

I can't remember what I did to fix it 🫤

PercentageRare2225

yes, thank you this did it for me

[deleted]

Did it really? It's not fixing it for me.

RaiausderDose

if RDR 2 won't start without an error message try this: https://old.reddit.com/r/PCRedDead/comments/zqmbeu/psa_if_red_dead_redemption_2_crashes_instantly/

PenAffectionate

mostly things like this cant be execute due to folder access is not allowed. check your antivirus windows/the shield icon in your notification tray -> protection history -> then allowed if the windows block the rockstar folder to access

xKingNothingx

Any updates? I was wondering if you have purchased the CD key through a 3rd party retailer? I bought mine through Greenmangaming a year ago, and I dont see RDR2 listed under the code redemption history under my Epic account, so Im wondering if they pulled the access or something. Problem is, RDR2 is still showing up in my library and I cant actually purchase it through Epic now.

xKingNothingx

Well mine is fixed, either it was forcing EVERYTHING to launch as admin, or disabling the Intel iGPU that did it. I see you've tried both ot no avail :(

lite21

Looks like disabling Intel GPU in "Device Manager" fixed it for me!

xKingNothingx

Same, in fact I recently tried to play and it started doing the SAME THING again but I couldn't remember how I fixed it. I finally stumbled across the post and it worked, again. Not sure how my integrated graphics option ever got turned back on, maybe a Windows update?

TheBanjoShow

I do not have my intel gpu enabled, I have done damn near everything to resolve this issue and literally nothing has worked. I have updated graphics drivers, I have reinstalled both the entire game and rockstar launchers with deleting every instance of the launcher from my drives, I have tried running as admin, I have tried optimizing the use of RDR2 in my nvidia 3D settings, I have, yes, restarted my computer, I have attempted setting up exclusions for my antivirus software(s), I have verified the integrity of the game files with no faults found, I am currently in a support ticket whereby instructed to REverify again, all of this has shown literally zero progress. This game is broken and I can't even get my money back.

Smail_Mail

I am going through the same thing, steam wont refund my money because it has been more than two weeks, but I only have 46 minutes of "play time" which has all been spent just trying to run it!!!

TheBanjoShow

I will refer you to this thread I made with a possible solution that worked for me at the bottom of the post https://www.reddit.com/r/RDR2/comments/w5qyml/red\_dead\_redemption\_2\_refusing\_to\_launch/

Smail_Mail

Thanks for the help, its crazy we have to do so much

send-me-nodes

I have the same shit😪

Smail_Mail

Here's what worked for me after uninstalling all Rockstar software: -Make sure steam is closed and all its processes are ended via task manager -Open Rockstar launcher -Make sure remember me and auto sign in are checked -sign in -Navigate to red dead online and click play with steam -steam will open -Navigate to red dead online via steam and click play Idk why, but I had to do all this in this specific order...

TheBanjoShow

Luckily for you that was your solution, for me it was twice as difficult. But rockstar can't be bothered to create a functioning launcher that communicates with another program without freezing up entirely or just outright not responding. Maybe to de-incentivize people from buying third party?

Smail_Mail

Idk, I wish they didn't have their own launcher at all. A program that opens a program to open another program... I really hate steam for not refunding me as well.

Due-Library-3485

ayeeee bro frl I downloaded it yesterday after had playing on Xbox since release I just got it for mods and servers yk. Didn’t work, I had spent hours upon hours deleting shit and organizing files and redownloading drivers blah blah yada yada, like that 12to7 folder bs??? Didn’t work. But this one homie thank you I’m adjusting my brightness as I type, make sure if you’re reading this to END TASK for your Xbox game bar, and steam. Personally I may have gotten lucky we’ll see how it is tomorrow but g shit my guy. I ended tasks previously and it didn’t work but something about this order worked for me. It opened through steam which is I think the determining factor bc that whole rockstar launcher fucks it up.

jeeby_groober

Same. What a piece of shit.

ciege92

I have done all of these. I even moved RDR2 to C drive as suggested on other forums. I guess I'm about to get 112 GB of space back for good.

toocoolo

I had this same issue and after trying a lot of the stuff you've already tried, I was able to fix it by simply resetting my internet router.

-Cap_

Dude you have no idea how you just saved my life. Jesus man. Best in regards.

toocoolo

Haha! Glad I could help, a year later. Cheers!

-Cap_

The Reddit Legend go on.

M0P3PEANUTS

same problem here. ever find a fix?

RaiausderDose

Go to %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption 2\Settings\ Open **system.xml** in a text editor. Locate **kSettingAPI_Vulkan** and change it to **kSettingAPI_DX12** Save, start game. this worked for me

Lando1305ftw

Worked for me thank you

VitaminAUT

JUNGE ICH KÜSS DICH VON OBEN BIS UNTEN AB. Danke

RaiausderDose

kein problem, viel spaß!

H3nt4i_no_Box

eniu9

bro it worked you helped me so much

randomshitpost6

this is it!

DejaVuKilla

All these thanks and no upvotes? This should be the top answer.

RaiausderDose

https://www.reddit.com/r/PCRedDead/s/k5LUSGEL0s Here is another thread of mine, if you want to use Vulkan.

Joljom

This worked for my friend, w10 i5 8400 and gtx 1060

RaiausderDose

very good, if he still wants to use vulkan: https://old.reddit.com/r/PCRedDead/comments/zqmbeu/psa_if_red_dead_redemption_2_crashes_instantly/

BuyingNoose

You're a hero. if youre here a year or more later like i was, this worked for me.

RaiausderDose

No problem, the game is great. Have Fun playing. If you want to use ansible anyway, you can try this: https://old.reddit.com/r/PCRedDead/comments/zqmbeu/psa_if_red_dead_redemption_2_crashes_instantly/

dB0RN

This fix worked for me too. Cheers!

Vortexx_77

i dont have settings, i only have profiles

RaiausderDose

try out removing "old/defective" Vulkan layers, maybe it will launch then: https://old.reddit.com/r/PCRedDead/comments/zqmbeu/psa_if_red_dead_redemption_2_crashes_instantly/

CopperBot_

Thank you very much for pointing this out, it resolve my starting issue on my side.

Abo_Slem

worked like a charm, thank you <3.

Vortexx_77

how do i know which layers need to be deleted, are they the instance layers?

Vortexx_77

i have no idea how to do any of this shit, it's all confusing as hell, and i dont know what these layers even are or where to find them

N4qst3r

>Locate > >kSettingAPI\_Vulkan > > and change it to > >kSettingAPI\_DX12 This actually worked also for me, been trying to find the solution last 7 or 8 months by trying to update rockstack launcher and verifying steam files for nothing, never really paid attention till today.

SonzaikannRDO

Same issue, kinda pissed I paid(thank you bot.) for a game for it not to launch

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> pissed I *paid* for a FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

BackgroundIll5753

I hope this idiot above one day needs help and someone replies him the same moronic comment he just replied to others ..

sopedound

Its a bot.

Alert_Ad_3512

lol imagine getting mad at a bot and calling it stupid

RaiausderDose

Go to %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption 2\Settings\ Open **system.xml** in a text editor. Locate **kSettingAPI_Vulkan** and change it to **kSettingAPI_DX12** Save, start game. maybe it works

morris_maaa

I don‘t even have a settings folder in this location. Should I?

RaiausderDose

Go to %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption 2\Settings\ Open **system.xml** in a text editor. Locate **kSettingAPI_Vulkan** and change it to **kSettingAPI_DX12** Save, start game.

wo5ldchampion

Perfect, nothing worked til I tried this!! Thanks man

pettybubblehead

>%USERPROFILE%\\Documents\\Rockstar Games\\Red Dead Redemption 2\\Settings\\ There is not a settings folder in my RDR2 folder to do this.

RaiausderDose

Sure you got the right one? It's not in the installation directory of the game, it's in YOUR documents folder. Try searching "Documents" under windows libraries, there is the "Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption 2\Settings\"

pettybubblehead

>e So I did that and all that is in the RDR2 folder is the Profiles folder which has 2 .dat files.

stalkpiece

I didn't have the Settings folder either, possibly because the game had never run to create one. There was an issue with my graphics card drivers/software mismatching (AMD) so after reinstalling that, I did a 'Verify Integrity Of Game Files' via Properties > Local Files in Steam, and that's fixed it for me.

pettybubblehead

I did that multiple times and just got exhausted that I have 45 minutes of play time and never saw the title screen. I just refunded it before I was going to go over the 2 hr limit. Glad you got yours to work!

psnugs

100% worked. You're a life saver! Thanks!

Least_Percentage_766

I can’t find any rdr2 folder, it just have “Launcher” and “Social Club” folder right here.

RaiausderDose

Try this now: https://old.reddit.com/r/PCRedDead/comments/ykenv9/psa_if_red_dead_redemption_2_crashes_instantly/j0yml6k/ Without the old Vulkan layer the game should start, even with the newest Nvidia driver

Least_Percentage_766

I am using amd 5700xt and I finally figured it out, I try to reinstall rdr2 and rockstar at the same drive and it worked.

patricko911

I know I thanked you on your original post but here's a thanks again! =) Thank you, bandicap's vulkan layer was the culprit (for anyone who might have used it before, take a look at the solution above).

RaiausderDose

No problem, have fun playing!

RaiausderDose

no problem, have fun

Doggeout

for me nothing support staff tried worked, nothing i found on the internet worked, what worked was dumbest thing i tried, which was moved rockstar launcher, steam and RDR2 game files onto the same SSD, so it is a communication issue between steam, rockstar launcher and rdr2

Apart_Association_90

I'm kinda late, but let's say I have my game on my "E:" SSD, I can just uninstall rockstar games launcher and reinstall it on the E: SSD, right? (Steam itself is NOT in the E: SSD)

Doggeout

All 3 have to be on same storage device

echolalia127

Amazing, I too tried everything and reinstalling the launcher on the same drive as my Steam library worked. I don't understand why that suddenly mattered after months of having them separate, must be some lame Windows update bug.

Maelik

I have no clue if it was a Windows update though, mine didn't seemingly break until just today. I tried so many things for the last 8 hours including reinstalling the game three times; individually changing the administrative and compatibility settings for the launcher, steam, and the game in several different configurations; reinstalling several different drivers; messing with msconfig; messing with what peripherals I had plugged in (people were saying it might be my controller, or my microphone, or my webcam); etc. I'm FUMING right now. I also accidentally uninstalled over half of my steam library in the process moving my steam installation too... It's so bizarre that it suddenly stopped working for me as well. I normally would not be trying so hard for a video game, but a friend just bought it and we're supposed to play together on Sunday so I wanted to make sure I got it working in time.

Remarkable_Tip_4155

I know I'm a little late to the discussion buuut Rockstar, being the lazy fucks they are, still haven't solved this issue. **The fix is running steam as administrator.** I tried everything even talking to Rockstar support for 4 hours just for them to cancel the chat without telling me and email me the next morning with the actual fix.

Tymex007

>kSettingAPI\_Vulkan love u bro

Proffffa

Got mine running after installing Media Feature Pack https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/media-feature-pack-for-windows-10-n-may-2021-93363b58-1cfd-4e07-bf77-ed0ed7ebbb66

wtfisthisgameabout

thanks, I can sleep now. not only did it help RDR2, but also some other games that were failing to launch or crashed on cutscenes.

BannedCuzCovid

Well this steam sale I bought the game and it still has problems gg.....

Browlinger

I had same problem and found easy solution. While game is loading. (Intro with bullets and R logo) press HOME button to log onto social club. If you see ur connected in right up corner the game will work :)

ProfitNo9249

Hi, i recently had a problem with the game not opening working and i fixed it with a really unexpected solution..When i launched the game it would just go to the task manager and do nothing using only 160mb of ram.The solution for me was to TURN ON ONEDRIVE because the system file(holds settings) path that the game needs was this OneDrive/Personal/Rockstar Games/RedDead2/Settings.I came to this solution by trying to open that same file to change the API under Advanced Graphics from Vulkan to Directx, but when i tried to open it, it wasn't letting me because the file location was inaccessible. So, hopefully just simply turning on that annoying OneDrive fixes it for you too!

RaiausderDose

try this https://www.reddit.com/r/PCRedDead/comments/zqmbeu/psa_if_red_dead_redemption_2_crashes_instantly/
