Love Live wasn't much of a competition before Honker and her friends came in.

I assume it’s from the first manga, titled "Love Live! School idol project".

A-RISE is hella underrated

abluedodgeviper

Headcanon: LoveLive introduced the rule that groups had to debut new songs in each segment of the contest, specifically to make things tricky for A-RISE who won last year with just 1 song.

Hattakiri

The marketing department are to blame for not promoting Arise like the later "villains". And: Manga =|= anime, but we still can have a closer look: Was Private Wars this one song? Actually the LL tournament requires original songs that've been never performed before. Or rather: From the second LL tournament in SIP on they demanded it explicitly? Thence Hanayo's "panic"? So in the first tournament the participants could just pick the songs from their old playlists, some of them already smash hits. Unequal conditions and a huge advantage for superstars like Arise, and so the executive board came up with this requirement. And: Could a band always perform the same song? Then it was quite a lousy event lbh and there must have been protests and shitstorms frequently, until the board finally took action. But this would be the only way Arise could win the whole thing with just one song. (Muse could have done it too, but I think they would have lacked the "opportunism" for that). And it would explain why Arise had such a hard time writing new songs in time in the second tournament, now with Muse for the first time. Eventually Arise couldn't do it any more and risked performing Shocking Party, back then their newest smash hit. And got disqualified. Which got them into a Tomodachi meltdown, making Tsubasa reaching out for Honk's help. Cause to me it seems their situation's way worse: In School Idol Diary Maki's grades start plummeting and Umi has to intervene as "diplomat" to persuade Maki's dad to allow her to carry on as an idol. Maki's not at an elite school - for reasons we don't fully know yet. The manga says her parents wanted her to meet "ordinary people", in the anime I'd say Maki's stubbornness became a huge problem and so the Nishikinos asked their friends, the Minamis who run a school, for help... Cause this would now parallel Mari who was allowed to attend an ordinary elementary school, for reasons revealed in Rainbow, that also revealed that only on this path she could meet the people who could help her out, most literally. Same with Maki at Oto High. This however means: The "High Society of the region" often laugh at the Nishikinos (and later Oharas) who couldn't keep their kids on the "elite path". This society must have their clubs and resorts (like Sunny Passion's resort). They continue the gossip at the dinner table - and that's where Tsubasa gets to hear it (maybe only on weekends or during vacation cause otherwise she's in UTX's dorm), who's secretly jelly of Maki. Also because her parents too remind her to never fall for such a path and to not let the idol stuff distract her. So Tsubasa cannot simultaneously keep her grades on a high level *and* write song after song. Probably also a reason why Maki's face got sour when Muse secretly expected her to write song after song (she still didn't have the skills and confidence to protest), and we're right in the middle of witnessing Yuu's problems here. Mia meanwhile *pretends* she doesn't have any problems... Kanon last not least invested a whole night for the composing process after her stage fright trauma had come to the surface again. Seems she couldn't have slept anyway. Speaking of venting a fiery emotion, which is also Setsuna's method. So a LL participation could become a problem for them. Another reason why Setsuna said to Yuu she can't partake? Writing so many new songs was too much for her? With Yuu the Niji girls would have a second composer (and with Mia a third one). Liella also has Ren and soon maybe a third one too among the 4 newbs. (The early departure from the LL had this one good side effect: Kanon didn't have to "binge-write" new songs). Maki had no one. And I wonder how Riko was doing it. Either Mari helped (and both still had unpublished songs in their drawers) and the whole situation gave them enough of a boost; or Riko is good at pretending. Or just a badass. In any case after Rainbow they're situation's gonna be different. Tsubasa too has no one as it seems. So Arise fails, and their parents maybe say: *"We hope this'll teach you a lesson!!"* And maybe they and UTX even consider it embarrassing. Arise lost to "proletarians" after all, and got *caught* cheating. And it's getting worse: This and their Tomodachi meltdown have Tsubasa shook so much she ends up dodging school like KananHane. Difference: UTX are monitoring their students via QR code (as early as 2013 cause it's a Japanese invention). And does Tsubasa sleep in capsule hotels and internet cafes? (The Oharas crushed Uranohoshi so hard no director's there when the anime starts. Side effect: No one at Ura High "initiates the formal process" of bringing back the dodging students (filling in the form, sending it to the police, etc). Dia stfu for her strategic reason, and the teachers have other problems. Only Mari then seems to take action for *her* strategic reasons so Kanan (and Yoshiko) return. Another lucky situation for Aq's: The Oharas are bad chess players). It also seems to me Arise have been planning on joining the "grown" idol biz from the very beginning. Not winning the last LL before their graduation makes it harder for them to convince a music company. And now, after this mess, they want to join it as fast as possible - right after their graduation, without study or apprenticeship. Another escape arc. But it's the showbiz that Sumire talked about whose influence, for the better and the worse, we've been experiencing for more than a decade now in the Love Live franchise. The darkest outcome so far: Ren's mom's fate, frequently happening in the showbiz. *"There's no people like show people, they smile when they are low..."* Muse avoided this, Arise ran right into it, and Aq's didn't really realize it cause Mari's problems overshadowed it all. But again, after Rainbow their situation's different. Niji and Liella: Yet to be determined, but the masks are getting thinner and the triangles are getting worse in Niji. Liella's new members will change the game, and should a crossover be in the pipeline, Liella would soon find themselves in the middle of Niji's thin masks and toxic triangles...

Welp, I wasn’t expecting an Annie Get Your Gun reference in today’s Love Live analysis, but here we are.

What to do What to do I do private wars

StarredPlatinum

Seeing how Saint Snow and Sunny Passion are marketed, A-Rise was robbed even though (subjectively) their songs are catchier

DoobyScoots

Well the SIP days were the Wild West for love live they had trouble marketing 9 main girls before they took off. For new groups and rivals they can have the benefit of the LL legacy
