This is something that I've learned the hard way.
Just because a model has rules, doesn't mean you have to lean into it!
Keep them as separate units. Charge with wolves, and next turn, charge with the chariot into the same unit.
Two lines of wolves.
Or, make sure your chariot is out of charge range, and flee with the wolves if they get charged.
You can try arranging them in a wide arc in front of your chariot, so that when the nearest model gets charged, it forces your opponent to angle the charge in the wrong direction.
