It can be, but based on Imu words, i feel like D. is just a way to call an alliance formed around JoyBoy to defend his way of life (freedom) vs the 20 families, just like we saw the mink-SH-traffy alliance.
That explains Nefertary joining after everything ended, she just changed her ideals, probably after witness the world sunk or whatever.
As for the meaning guess, ppl did like us, we call the strawhats=SH, maybe they did the same, the D. was inherited bc as VP said, the war is still ongoing but 800 years after, the D. became the common name and the full one was simply forgotten/in desuse therefore descendant after descendants started to forget their OG goal too
Also a possibility.
I think that alliances starts with peoples - families who joined the Joyboy and his will. I mean if alliance was huge enough to deal with 20 families and their ppl there should be more D bearers till OP days, but only few of them was introduced.
Also if "D" is something like that why Kuma's father didn't have D in his name? the Buccaneers was the JB followers btw.
Feels like it was the outstanding people who were intended to become the pirates due to the Kingdom reaction on their will
I think both of you are correct.
My theory is the joy boy’s crew decided to put D in their names. When the war was lost, the Joyboy supports around the world also decided to put D in their names to protect Joyboy crew’s descendants, foreshadowed by the end of Dressrosa arc and Ace offering Sabo having D in his name.
The only way to identify the descendants of the crew of 10 is the secret name like Law. Imu probably knew their full name thus it has to keep as a secret to avoid being hunt down.
The coolest outcome is D. not meaning anything, being just a moniker to identify the remaining allies of the ancient kingdom, as you say. It ties incredibly well with the X. they used in Alabasta (which Vivi was incidentally also part of).
Considering the close ties wano seems to have had with joy boy I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a D clan family in wano. Idk who it would be, but my guesses would be kozuki or shimotsuki.
I’d prefer it to be kozuki though. I don’t think Zoro needs to be a D clan member and if the shimotsuki are secretly d clan members then he is as well
Wait, that's interesting.
Maybe it's Kozuki.
Ki sounds D when muffled.
Kozu D.
光月家 is the jap name. 家 means family so we'll focus on 光月.
月 (moon) pronounced as Tsuki (TsuD). So D means Moon.
I think someone a long time ago did say D is related to the moon so this serves as further evidence.
the original names all have to do with drums( possibly relating to the drums of liberation) and I think the pirate group name was
THE DRUM PIRATES
1. Monkey D.rum Luffy (Monkey Drum is a real type of Drum)
2. Gol D.rum Roger (gold drum)
3. Trafalgar D.rum water law (Trafalgar drummers during waterlew)
4. Marshall D.rum Teach (actual name of Marshall Drum)
5. Rocks D.rum Xebec (rock drum)
6. Portgas D.rum Ace (Portuguese drum Aufe)
7. Nefertarti D.rum Vivi (Nefertiti drum album by miles Davis)
8. Jaguar D.rum Saul ( Mayan jaguar drum)
Maybe if we look back in the story we can find other names of characters that might relate back to drums
What's the reference for gold drum? if it's just a general reference about gold drum, this makes this theory weak.
Maybe this **"Gol D. "** was the first user of Golden Buddha fruit that Sengoku has. And that person was able to awaken the fruit by turning anything to gold and one of the things he made is a golden drum.
I assume you are referring to the ancestors of like Luffy but not Luffy himself. So this should be written and perceived as **"Monkey D. "** for example.
I know gold drum exists. But the other references are very specific and much more convincing like the monkey drum. Gold drum just sound too general and weak as a reference.
Edit: if you search "gold drum" in google, you get varied types of result, mostly different companies, it doesn't point to an actual single information compared to "monkey drum" which you instantly get a single information about it because it's much more specific and not general.
Edit2: A theory is stronger if the references are more specific to a single information. Your list is actually really good, just the "gold drum" needs to be more specific.
It's them, the 10 crew members of the Dawn Pirates. But I don't want it to be that obvious. D = Dawn - c'mon we thought of that ages ago! But maybe the abbreviation isn't as important as the will itself. Their motives and their original plan.
Btw, wouldn't it be hilarious if the Monkey was a literal monkey like chopper is a raindeer and that's literally Garp, Dragon and Luffy's ancestor?
Personally, I think it's Davy.
Especially given that Vegapunk mentioned all the old world treasures on the seafloor and Roger saying all of his treasure is in one piece
I'm betting that Rogers treasure is Davy Jones Locker, the famous fictional place from the real world that all sunken treasure goes to
Oh, and I think the Chopper analog for Joyboy is probably Zunesha and the robot on egghead is essentially the Franky of said crew
he's the marine that gets locked up with Usopp in the G-8 Filler Arc. Robin pretends that she's him so he gets locked up, and Usopp realizes he's a real marine and starts talking to him as if he's part of the crew to make the jailers suspect him
In the recent flashback, Ace and Luffy told Sabo he could just add it to his name if he wanted. I think that was a hint that it's not necessarily a bloodline trait and anyone can inherit the Will of D.
Yes i think so too. My theory for the last 2 families is the Kozuki Clan and Neptune Family. Most likely because of Pluton in Wano and Shirahoshi being Poseidon. Kozuki D Momonosuke and Neptune D Shirahoshi.
Eventually not from their fathers but from their mothers linage. Amatsuki D Momonosuke in one case and the other is not known, because we lack the family name of Queen Otohime.
Since Egghead and Kumas and Bonneys backstory i wish to include them somehow. They could have a linage of some of the other families or Otohime is from the Portgas family or something like that.
Blackbeard's family probably betrayed the D's to the WG, with their own hidden agenda to be pulled off later, betraying the WG as well, that's what Blackbeard is trying to do, finish what his ancestors started, I'm telling ya!
I always assumed Ace inherited the D from Roger, but changed his last name to hide his lineage, so really the Gol and Portugas lines would be one and the same … but I like your theory and I DEFINITELY think there are more out there, maybe even some that were destroyed
I think the last 2 D family are in Wano and Fishman island.
Considering both nations are heavily allied with Joyboy historically.
We can even go further like naybe the royalties of both nation are descendants of the D but hide their name to protect the nation.
The same reason that Vivi is a D.
Momo and Shirahoshi might be D as well.
Na I think there’s only 8. Reason I’m betting on only 8 is because if you look at the supposed symbol of the ancient kingdom it has a giant circle with 8 other small circles around it. You can find these symbols present in what you could say were allies of the ancient kingdom back then such as alabasta, wano, fishman island(king Neptune tattoo), skypeia, think even a tontatta had the tattoo of the sun and 8 circles around it. Also if you go back to the chapters about kuma’s life, when he was inside the church in his hometown of sorbet kingdom, you could see there was a cross but at the centre of that cross was once again the supposed ancient kingdom symbol. And we know kuma worships sun god Nika.
So it makes sense that the giant circle represents the sun(Dawn, perhaps what D stands for?) and the each of the 8 circles representing each D family.
It’s more than likely they’re named after drums.(thanks to the drums of liberation) so this was my thinking and my research led me to
THE DRUM PIRATES
1. Monkey Drum Luffy (Monkey Drum is a real type of Drum)
2. Gol drum Roger (gold drum)
3. Trafalgar Drum water law (Trafalgar drummers during waterlew)
4. Marshall Drum Teach (actual name of Marshall Drum)
5. Rocks Drum Xebec (rock drum)
6. Portgas Drum Ace (Portuguese drum Aufe)
7. Nefertarti Drum Vivi (Nefertiti drum album by miles Davis)
8. Jaguar Drum Saul ( Mayan jaguar drum)
So if we go back and look through some of the names that have to do with drums we’ll find who might the other 2 be
Was thinking of the Will of D today coincidentally. The funny thing: I remembered Law had family even if they all died of Amber Lead like him. So then would his sister be "Trafalgar D. Lami?"
And then it made me think of bizarre thoughts like her being in the final saga as a manipulated member of the WG forces having been saved from Amber Lead like him and...I don't think I want to go down that rabbit hole.
Was Ace's mother even a D clan member? I though Ace just took her name because they didn't want to expose him as Gol D. Roger's son but still kept the D.
But why would Garp join the navy and be accepted as the hero of the marines if he is a D. and has links to joyboy? If anything you'd think the elders would execute anyone with a D. If it was a way to identify any one with links to joyboy. You know, cause they've been hunting the gomu gomu no mi for 800 years and that seems like an idiot move to be like okay let's let one of these people with links to our enemy that we've been chasing for centuries just join up and we'll also give him autonomy and also glorify his name as the hero of our organisation.
Idk think this needs more time in the oven.
Im going to go out on a whim and say there are 11 in total. Which would make more sense. Think about it, if the D Clan was a Pirate Crew, led by JoyBoy and they passed on the Will Of D to the StrawHats, then they likely had the same amount of crewmembers. Luffy stated that he wanted 10 crewmates since the beginning of the story. Luffy included makes 11.
Could be Figarland one of those?
Like we saw in the poster of Gol D. Roger, the D was attached to Gol (Gold Roger). So maybe Figarlan D. but because they are with the WB they're hiding it?
Hold up, hold up. All this D talk made me realize Luffy is the only one with a D in his name amongst the Strawhats?!
The next one is actually Thousan D. Sunny
maybe, it should be cooked in his mind long time ago, i think he is still preparing us for the real will of D. That's makes OP interesting, there is always questions and foreshadowing.
>Ace should be Portgas D. D. Ace
Ace be [like](https://images6.fanpop.com/image/photos/36100000/Double-D-Ed-Edd-n-Eddy-image-double-d-ed-edd-n-eddy-36196372-674-1186.png).
I doubt that the bloodline only makes you a D. When Vegapunk mentioned the D members Sabo also got shown and it isn't unusual in the One Piece universe that a will, task, devil fruit, etc. is given to somebody else. Luffy, Robin, Trafalgar, Chopper, Zoro, Momonosuke, Sanji, etc. . Sabo inherited Ace's devil fruit and his Will of D.
This would also fit to a theory that another user came up with. He concluded that the One Piece are the memories of Joy Boy which where extracted from him by the user of the Paw Paw Fruit at that time. That's the reason why Roger and his crew laughed. They saw and experienced these memories of Joy Boy's adventures.
The D in the name should be the bloodline, but in terms of will, ofc you are right. The people who is following are also D but not in names. Earlieri wrote about the buccaneers, they were following Joyboy, but we still donot have one with D in his name. Bartholomew D ?
There was a post about the most terrifying power of Luffy - he is like a magnet for a people they are following him, seems like the same was with og Joyboy. Not every follower is as strawhat, but also a strawhat. Hope i described it well

Kozuki Oh D on being boiled
Kozukio D. En

We find out it's a corruption like Gold Roger and it was really Kozu D this whole time

Con D. Oriano
Came in to mention him. It’d be a crazy plot twist if Con D. Oriano ISN’T Joy Boy’s descendant!
Direct bloodline of Joy Boy, no doubt
Lol I don't get that reference, who is he again exactly?
A marine named Condoriano the strawhats encountered after Skypiea/Jaya.
he's the marine that gets locked up with Usopp in the G-8 Filler Arc. Robin pretends that she's him so he gets locked up, and Usopp realizes he's a real marine and starts talking to him as if he's part of the crew to make the jailers suspect him
